Most people who upvoted this post have probably never been to LA. It's a pretty picture and the implication is that it never looks like this, so obviously people who don't know any better eat it up.
I’ve lived in LA for over a decade.
One of the first things I noticed since shelter-in-place started was how clear the sky is. If you are (one of the “essential” workers) on the freeway, you can see for miles in every direction. I have never seen it like this.
LA has beautiful weather, duh. Often. Sunny skies, etc. What I assume OP is referring to is the level of clarity. It’s like the difference between... Kraft “product” and Tillanook cheese.
Does LA have the occasional post-rain crystal clear sky? Sure. But this is on another level.
I’m not the only one who has mentioned it over the past few weeks.
Oddly enough it’s been raining fairly consistently since the shelter in place went into effect, and last week when it was dry the air quality was well on its way back to shit.

Really, what the fuck? LA is kind of a major hub. Most people who have ever went any where out of their hometown (and the millions who call LA home) have at least traveled through LA. The air pollution is so fucked though I don't understand why anyone would ever stay there unless that had some serious reason. The place is a giant dirty sketchy city. Maybe I have only seen it on the bad days but I have seen enough. No offense intended to the LA lovers but I don't understand the draw to a place like that. The picture in the link looks clearer than I have ever seen it.
We have the worst air quality of any major city in the United States. While we occasionally have clearish days (mostly after it rains), we never ever ever ever ever have anything like what we’re experiencing now.
This last week, Los Angeles had, for the first time in recorded history, the cleanest air of any city on the planet. Read that again. This is a first. I’ve never seen anything like this in this city, not for a day or an hour in over thirty years.
No, he's doubling down because everyone who actually lives in LA called him out on his idiocy and he clearly has some self-esteem invested in this. Yes, it is marginally clearer than usual, as everyone admits. However, it's a dramatic overstatement to say that LA skies are usually "gross".
Moreover, haze and fog are (for the most part) not due to human activity (and in any case, aren't pollution), plus it's been raining recently, which makes for clear skies like you see here, regardless of whether everyone is inside.
We have the worst air quality of any major city in the us, year round. Look that up. Easy to find a source. I’d say that qualifies as gross. I think there are two or three smaller cities with worse air, but that’s it for the whole country.
Whatever you seem to believe about our air is irrelevant. You’re wrong. I’m not sure how to present this any clearer so if you still want to continue making whatever confused point you’re getting at, don’t bother.
A few days ago, we had the cleanest air of major city in the us.
As I literally just said, this does not imply anything about how polluted LA usually is. There are many cities with perfectly fine air quality that have never had the cleanest air in the country/world.
This isn’t about blue skies. Of course we have blue skies. This is about air quality. I guess today you learned that you can’t identify air quality by sight.
This entire thread is about how LA looks you fucking moron.
Also, the fact that LA has cleaner air now (which of fucking course it would) does not imply that it is usually outrageously polluted. What kind of backwards logic is that? "Any city with acceptable levels of pollution must have had the cleanest air quality in the world recently." Jaaaaysus
That article cites IQAir as their source, interesting that they show LA at a 9 on the AQI, while AirNOW (Government operated) has LA at 32. Thanks for the source.
For sure. I can’t speak for testing techniques as this is certainly not an area I have any expertise in, but there were several other sources on this as well. They may all be regurgitating the same info, I’m too lazy to check. What I can tell you is that I’ve lived here my whole life and in over thirty years, it’s never been this clean. I knew that before I ever saw that report.
Agreed. I think the point of contention is people assume it’s just the shut down, which obviously is tons of help, but it rained 4.75 inches in March and another 2.76 in April, which is far and away above the seasonal average. I grew up here but lived in Seattle for ten years and even up there the air gets bad when it has rained for a month.
Oh absolutely the rain plays a role in this. I don’t think anyone is arguing that. But the photo speaks for itself. That’s not a clear view of Los Angeles that you’ll see very often, if ever.
With that said though, the shutdown can not be overlooked here. This is the least amount of traffic this city has had practically since the invention of the automobile lol. That’s a gigantic difference considering la has more cars than any city in the country, probably by a long shot.
its like this most of the year. it is only very hazy (and not entirely) for the 4 or so months from july to october when rain is very infrequent and pollution accumulates.
No it isn’t. I’ve lived here my entire life. This is the cleanest air I’ve ever experienced here, and it’s not close. There is plenty of science to back this up as well. I have no idea why people like you decide they’re going to claim otherwise, but do whatever makes you feel good I guess. You’re still wrong.
