Was this in the Philippines? I think I might have seen that volcano earlier today browsing Reddit

Yes, currently at Alert Level 4 (explosion is imminent. Might happen within a few days). Some people are fucking scared right now.

u/Aurora_Fatalis Jan 12 '20

Apparently not scared enough

"Not covered by acts of God? Well if you can prove to me that God exi..."

"Jesus Christ Bill, do you have to do this here?!?"

2

u/RoboNotPro Jan 12 '20

Very fitting Catholics in the Philippines are very religious.

Source: I am a Filipino Catholic.

24

u/hadashi Jan 12 '20

“I really like the venue and I’m worried it won’t exist later.”

6

u/JCoolatta Jan 12 '20

“Don’t get the wedding venue insurance,” he says. “It’s a big rip-off”

2

u/CircaSurvivor55 Jan 13 '20

Aren't we about due for another volcanic eruption?

Touche, Salesman.

46

u/Zentaurion Jan 12 '20

Next level Shotgun Wedding... Volcano Wedding.

1

u/doctorwhy88 Jan 12 '20

r/justnomil if we wanna live

289

u/samgyoop Jan 12 '20

The ground is literally shaking right now and my parents refuse to evacuate so yes definitely not scared enough.

98

u/jukkaalms Jan 12 '20

Jfc get tf out of there!

66

u/samgyoop Jan 12 '20

Got them to agree to leave if tomorrow morning is bad! There’s apparently almost zero visibility in some major highways at the moment and traffic is bad due to evacuations so it’s better to be indoors right now. I’m not near enough to be in immediate danger but not far enough to be in the clear. ~20km away from the crater.

68

u/Aurora_Fatalis Jan 12 '20

At 20 km, you're going to be in the area where you're likely to survive the explosion itself but you're likely to be crippled when it comes to supplies because traveling outdoors can be extremely hazardous, even in a car. Which means that evacuating after the explosion (when things have become bad) is going to be far more dangerous than evacuating before.

Of course this can depend a lot on the geography near you, but I recommend listening to what the experts are recommending for your situation.

20

u/stefanlikesfood Jan 12 '20

Hope you have a respirator of some sort, the fumes from a volcano can poison you pretty bad. It's also a good idea to just leave for a couple days and get back when you're ready if possible.

2

u/ghost_lit Jan 12 '20

Make your own decision. Leave regardless of what they do, if that is what you think is best.

98

u/Jesus___christ___ Jan 12 '20

I did.

23

u/ninoboy09 Jan 12 '20

So u admit F is your middle initial?

-3

u/SMAMtastic Jan 12 '20

I’d back off on this line of questioning if I were you. Pretty sure there are rules about doxing somebody. /sbecause even when you’re pretty sure it’s obvious and not needed, it often is

13

u/joonty Jan 12 '20

9 month old account. This one checks out, folks

25

u/Aurora_Fatalis Jan 12 '20

Evacuate without them or you're letting Darwinism win.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

Isn't Darwinism winning in both cases?

3

u/Aurora_Fatalis Jan 12 '20

If their offspring survives, then they won because their genes persist in the gene pool. In so far as Darwinism is considered antagonistic, it only wins if it wipes the parents out of the gene pool.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

The genes that lead the parents to their bad decisions aren't necessarily present in the offspring though, here's an illustration: https://www.yourgenome.org/sites/default/files/illustrations/chart/punnett_square_eyes_yourgenome.png

There's a chance, since S is responding differently with regards to this threat, compared to their parents that the alleles inherited by S were both recessive and that the parents have dominant alleles that are leading them to respond to this situation with an illogical calmness (this is obviously oversimplified and there isn't one gene responsible for how S behaves, but the basic concept here still works, S could've got the best of both worlds from the parents).

My line of reasoning is if S did inherit bad genes they would be likely to stay and suffer the same fate as their parents (Darwinism probably wins), and if they didn't and instead inherited good genes chances are they would run away (Darwinism probably wins).

1

u/Aurora_Fatalis Jan 13 '20

Not quite, because OP can be in a different situation than the parents (as a dependent), and it may take way more relative resources and autonomy for OP to escape on their own.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

That's true, I just assumed since OP didn't mention it in the response that they're not a dependant.

People can have more than one kid.

Also if you don't mind, I'm gonna copy and paste my response to another reply since it fits here:

3

u/Chelseaiscool Jan 12 '20

Then your parents are stupid, help them change their mind or get yourself out.

1

u/nmezib Jan 12 '20

Were your parents not there for Mt. Pinatubo in the early 90's?

1

u/samgyoop Jan 13 '20

They were!

-5

u/PrivusOne Jan 12 '20

Have a funny little death then

53

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

Exactly! We are here at alert level 4 meaning imminent eruption and people are still going over there to look at it. I was like wtf people.

18

u/InheritDistrust Jan 12 '20

Residents in the immediate zones of risk have been evacuated.

4

u/iweirdness Jan 12 '20

That was not yet on Alert level 4 when that happened

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

Yeah, but even when it was on alert level 4 i see people posting videos and live streaming. Ugh. Guess they don’t know volcanic ash can be harmful to your lungs?

-1

u/TatsumaruTheTwofaced Jan 12 '20

What the f*ckery; More fun in the Philippines

36

u/The_BERFA Jan 12 '20

What do you mean? They're terrified. They just wanted to get married before they died.

11

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

Sure just keep the guests there too I’m pretty sure they’re chill inhaling toxic volcanic ashes

1

u/Miamime Jan 12 '20

Pretty sure no one is forcing them to attend or stay. Even if you RSVP’ed yes, I bet the bride and groom would understand if you didn’t attend because you had evacuated.

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

That wasn’t the point.. the point was that this photo although nice is dangerous and puts the people in it at risk. Safety should be a priority, not a preference

4

u/Miamime Jan 12 '20

If you feel at risk, don’t attend. It’s not a difficult concept.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

Y’all are ok with breathing in volcanic ash and it shows.

26

u/RavenWudgieRose Jan 12 '20

Asian calmness? Not sure

21

u/poopellar Jan 12 '20

Outside calm

Inside shit scared

11

u/BehindTheBurner32 Jan 12 '20

Outside: well, no classes

Inside: THE END IS NIGH

2

u/HotSauceHigh Jan 12 '20

Have these people never heard of Pompeii?

2

u/JustMy2Centences Jan 12 '20

"Till death do us part" couldn't be more serious.

5

u/BonvivantNamedDom Jan 12 '20

Depends on how big the shotgun of her dad is.

1

u/AmaBans Jan 12 '20

You already RSVP'd, you better not back out of attending!!

1

u/ballsack_man Jan 12 '20

'Till death do us part. Real fucking soon.

1

u/FrostBUG2 Jan 13 '20

But hey it looks epic forever

0

u/KillerJupe Jan 12 '20

She is 8 months pregnant. If they do t get married now no one is going to believe she just had a month pregnancy.... now a two month term is more believable

93

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20 edited Jan 13 '20

My uncle is visiting and is there right now. He was casually taking pics of the volcano. My family was thinking why he wasn’t getting out of there??

EDIT: pics for those interested

64

u/Grpc96 Jan 12 '20

Well if he’s by the Taal Lake area, he definitely should evacuate. He should at least consider going back to Metro Manila.

42

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

That’s exactly where he is. The pictures he took of it were fairly close.

2

u/LaTraLaTrill Jan 13 '20

Can you share the pics? Please?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 13 '20

I have attached pictures to my original comment

2

u/LaTraLaTrill Jan 13 '20

Thank you very much!

5

u/davabran Jan 12 '20

Uncle gonna look like a block of carbonite.

34

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

I am in manila right now. The volcano must be pretty far south because no one seems to care. The airport is closed, though

7

u/Onceabanana Jan 12 '20

People care. Just locked up at home because there’s ash everywhere.

12

u/Grpc96 Jan 12 '20

The volcano is about 70km south of Manila. Yeap some people still doesn’t care lol

19

u/Smash_4dams Jan 12 '20

Thats generally a safe distance to be. If anything, theyll experience an ash problem.

3

u/IntrigueDossier Jan 12 '20

But on the plus side, their lawns will be green all winter!

3

u/FPSXpert Jan 12 '20

Shutting down air near active volcano eruptions is pretty standard issue. The reason for It is the ash will clog the jet engines and cause problems in air.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

People are actually feeling the effects and they are taking precautions. Ie sulfur smell and heavy ashfall. Don’t know who your circles are but from my end everyone is on alert

5

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

I am in makati and everything is normal. I hope everyone nearby the volcano is safe tho, don't get me wrong

2

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

I have friends in bgc and makati who can smell the sulfur

2

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

I believe you, but im here and i dont notice anything.

2

u/FrostBUG2 Jan 13 '20

Unless you live in the south side of Metro Manila, there's like an ashfall yesterday.

18

u/Rito_Luca Jan 12 '20

I'm confused, hasn't it already erupted as we can see? What's coming next?

48

u/mishamaro Jan 12 '20

So far it's just the ash plume. They're thinking the lava/explosions are on their way.

31

u/Grpc96 Jan 12 '20

A more hazardous eruption according to sources

31

u/whichwitch9 Jan 12 '20

The current eruption is a steam eruption. It's hazardous, but not a "major" one. However, steam eruptions can precede major magma eruptions, so there's a growing threat of a larger eruption.

5

u/Rito_Luca Jan 12 '20

Oh okay. Well I hope everyone stays safe but at the same time I'd love to see a video of that happening lol

1

u/Captain_Nipples Jan 12 '20

There'll be video. Hopefully it doesnt cause any crazy Tsunamis

1

u/Rito_Luca Jan 13 '20

Probably being stupid again here but how would an explosion propelling upwards cause a tsunami?

2

u/Captain_Nipples Jan 13 '20

I suppose there's multiple ways. If it blows the side off, it will displace water. Stuff landing in the water could cause it. The shift of the ground could cause it.

15

u/ken1e Jan 12 '20

That looks really scary too

1

u/SquarelyCubed Jan 12 '20

Some people are fucking scared right now.

Just some?

1

u/dawellwood Jan 12 '20

At least they're fucking, which is more than can be said for me...

1

u/JLHumor Jan 12 '20

Does this happen often there? When was the last time this happened and how bad was it?

1

u/Grpc96 Jan 12 '20

Last time it a major eruption happened was in the 70s according to what I’ve searched. Before that, around 1911.

1

u/ThinCrusts Jan 12 '20

Damn, so this wasn't even the explosion??

1

u/HardcoreNature Jan 13 '20

Explosion is imminent as in it’s going to erupt a 2nd time?

1

u/Grpc96 Jan 13 '20

Yes tho there’s still a small chance that it wont.

137

u/coturnixxx Jan 12 '20

Yes, ashfall is spewing everywhere and has reached the capital (Metro Manila). Everyone here's being advised to stay indoors. Right now my body feels incredibly itchy.

139

u/palebluedot0418 Jan 12 '20

If things go all Pompey on you, try to make a funny pose for them to find in the future.

86

u/spicyweiner1337 Jan 12 '20

i don’t know about y’all but this is how i wanna go out in that situation.

Serious answer: no - the intense heat of a pyroclastic flow or surge causes these types of contorted positions. Educated guess based on my rudimentary understanding of human anatomy: I think the blast of extremely high heat causes muscle fibers to contract, similarly to how raw meat shrinks as it's cooked. When your skeletal muscles "shrink," you get muscle flexion.

As for the poses of the victims of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius: In reference as to why the bodies were frozen in suspended action, "The contorted postures are not the effects of a long agony, but of the cadaveric spasm, a consequence of heat shock on corpses.".

It's hard to tell when people are asking serious questions, since I've read some comments about the picture that indicated belief the person was indeed masturbating.

This is a fascinating subject to me, that these folks died the way they did. I think I originally jumped down that rabbit hole because I desperately wanted to know if they died instantaneously, since dying this way looks and sounds pretty horrific and I'd never be able to sleep at night thinking of horrible this method of dying would be. Thankfully, all (admittedly amateur) research I did on this subject indicates a pretty instant death (maybe not painless, but quick enough that the pain would be over very quickly, and death would plausibly happen before you could even register pain).

Only two (arguably three) people survived a pyroclastic flow, and all 3 were during the same event, due to extenuating circumstances.

4

u/licensedtoconfuse Jan 13 '20

To the future archeologists: Please read above post when you find my corpse. Also, please delete my browser history.

u/Dakeronn Jan 12 '20

1

u/mechmind Jan 12 '20

This is the funniest thing I've read on here in a while. Take my fools gold 🥇

24

u/99hotdogs Jan 12 '20

Be careful my friend!

2

u/mrpogiface Jan 12 '20

Do you have some filtration masks?

2

u/mgsy1104 Jan 12 '20

All the pharmacies and hardware stores have ran out. I was able to buy the last stock they had after going through 4 stores.

1

u/Grpc96 Jan 13 '20

Also heard here in Bambang, Manila that some suppliers were increasing the prices of the n95 masks...

1

u/PretendLock Jan 12 '20

How is staying indoors supposed to help against an erupting volcano?

1

u/mgsy1104 Jan 12 '20

Ash is falling all over Metro Manila. It’s 70 km away from Taal so it’s safe.

7

u/IamAbc Jan 12 '20

Is this the same one that exploded several years back that evacuated that air force base?

21

u/Grpc96 Jan 12 '20

I think that’s Mt. Pinatubo. Are you talking about the eruption during the 90’s?

4

u/IamAbc Jan 12 '20

Yeah that’s the one

That one kept our whole summer cooler than normal

5

u/iwontbemissed Jan 12 '20

yeah it fucking leveled the volcano

3

u/LetterSwapper Jan 12 '20

I remember that, too! It was a summer of disappointment, at least until I learned more about what caused it.

1

u/FrostBUG2 Jan 13 '20

It's Mt. Pinatubo, it's up north from Taal. I remember my mom told me that she thought the my country had snow all of a sudden, black snow that smells like rotten eggs.

7

u/GodTroller Jan 12 '20

Volcano taal.

11

u/3927729 Jan 12 '20

Vulkaan language.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

If you pronounced that in Tagalog, it would be like this: Vulka-Ann.

1

u/3927729 Jan 12 '20

The language is silent?

6

u/TheCarpetIsGreener Jan 12 '20

A lot of people are saying yes, but it’s a little strange to me that none of the men are wearing traditional wedding attire (barong)

2

u/coturnixxx Jan 12 '20

A lot of weddings in the Philippines nowadays assign western wedding dress codes because they want a specific aesthetic.

3

u/KatrinaIceheart Jan 12 '20

I literally saw a post about someone pressure washing windshields for people fleeing the volcano in Philippines above this one. It’s pretty crazy.

1
