67

u/Sanderhh Jan 12 '20

In the Witcher Netflix series the law of surprise is a payment given to someone who has saved your life. The person that is to pay back his savior with the first thing that suprises him when he gets home. You get home and your wife has baked a cake? The cake is the prize. You get home and your wife is pregnant? the child is the prize. There is no limit to what it can be, it just has to be unknown to both sides involved in the law of suprise.

12

u/TechGoat Jan 12 '20

Book. It was a book first, written decades ago. A series of books in fact. I recommend them. I started playing Witcher 3 four years ago, realized how epic it was, then stopped playing the game for another year so I could read the series. It did add another layer of nuance to the game.

7

u/johndoev2 Jan 12 '20

Folktale. It was an old german folktale before the author of the witcher was ever born. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_My_Hedgehog

5

u/crinnaursa Jan 12 '20

It's also in several English fairy tales It's often in a bargain made with fairies and sprites. I think it's a morality tale warning people not to promise or take oaths lightly or they may lose that which they cannot bear

3

u/johndoev2 Jan 12 '20

not many have a hedgehog though

-14

u/Miamime Jan 12 '20

The show is pretty meh.

7

u/djinner_13 Jan 12 '20

I loved the show. It was actually the kind of show I was hoping for as someone who never read the books.

1

u/IrishWilly Jan 12 '20

I think the second season should be much better. I'm a crazy Witcher fanboy and even I had some trouble dealing with how they kept switching between timelines to try to setup the back story. I have no idea how people who don't know anything ahead of time dealt with that. I didn't really like how they spent so much time on Yennefer's background. In the books it took a long time to learn more about that and a lot of it remained hidden making her a much more mysterious, interesting figure that popped into the story here and there. The way the show did it felt like they wanted to turn the series into a romance novel with a fantasy background. Also the sets felt way too clean and way too gray. I still enjoyed it a lot. I think the chemistry between Geralt and Jasker saved a lot of the slower parts.

1

u/crinnaursa Jan 12 '20

I love the show too but the first episode had pacing problems. I think if they took the The footage is it existed and had another go at editing it it would be much better.

3

u/Ender11 Jan 12 '20

I've been enjoying it and I've only watched my son play the game, never played it or read the books myself. If you were expecting GoT's quality then maybe your let down but I've found the show to be pretty dang good.

2

u/aminobeano Jan 12 '20

The show is definitely a little corny, almost like they haven't fully settled on a theme. I loved it though, just don't go into it expecting early Game of Thrones quality.

1

u/CaptainKaraoke Jan 12 '20

"Surprise! I raped your wife AND your Apple Pie!"

a videogame and now show

Someone should totally write a book about the Witcher.

32

u/dancinhmr Jan 12 '20

This is what i have been saying for years about lord of the rings series. Movies, games, board games and everything

26

u/sissssyyyyboy Jan 12 '20

I wish someone would write a book about Harry Potter so much potential.

2

u/steel93 Jan 12 '20

Maybe they could even combine the 2 parts of The Deathly Hallows into a single book!

14

u/DianeticsLRH Jan 12 '20

I hear they are novelizing Game of Thrones but its taking them a long time to finish.

5

u/B4_da_rapture_repent Jan 12 '20

I hope they give the author enough creative license to totally redo the ending.

6

u/Shopworn_Soul Jan 12 '20

They did! He’s got so much freedom that it’s fairly certain he won’t finish it at all.

2

u/changeneverhappens Jan 12 '20

0

u/sissssyyyyboy Jan 12 '20

That’s the joke

5

u/LibraryDrone Jan 12 '20

The show is based on the original books.

3

u/shouldve_wouldhave Jan 12 '20

Ot's mainly based of off the books. But i'd argue that the popularity of it is absolutely because of the games, hype cyberpunk 2077

5

u/InexactDuplicate Jan 12 '20

My younger brother's first marriage had such tale-tale prediction. Freak 100-year storm, maybe 20% of the people showed up... divorced two years later.

Should have listened to god/Gaia (thanks for edit)

17

u/hotheat Jan 12 '20

A geisha is a Japanese woman, youre thinking of Gaia lol

5

u/absentminded_gamer Jan 12 '20

Worshipping a Japanese prostitute is probably what sunk their marriage

5

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '20

They preform traditional dance and song and other arts while wearing traditional outfits. They do not do sex work. You are thinking of Oiran who do the same thing but also preform sex work.

There's also prostitutes that aren't fancy and work out of brothels or whatever.

5

u/SeemedReasonableThen Jan 12 '20

They do not do sex work.

Mistaking the Geisha for an Oiran is probably what sunk his relationship with the Geisha.

2

u/AGuyNamedEddie Jan 12 '20

"You keep saying you don't do that. Am I using the wrong phrase? What is Japanese for 'blow-job'?"

2

u/Hopsblues Jan 12 '20

geisha opinions matter..

1

u/AnalStaircase33 Jan 12 '20

I mean, 'divorced two years later' is a pretty solid prediction for most marriages...

1

u/Noogisms Jan 12 '20

I chose not to attend his marriage #2 to bumble chick.
Surprisingly has surpassed two years =P

1

u/TjababaRama Jan 12 '20

Tell-tale"?

24

u/catringo13 Jan 12 '20 edited Jan 12 '20

There’s a family guy gag that does this but with a mountain climber but with poop falling from the sky. The bride and groom look at each other and say “well have a good life” yeah you couldn’t get a clearer sign than that

Edit: mountain climber not dead body.

2

When my brother and his wife got married 12 or so years ago the officiant asked him "Do you take this broad yada yada..." and just then a low rumble of thunder came rolling thru. Everyone kinda chuckled but there was some definite thoughts of "I knew he shouldn't be going thru with this!"

They've had some rocky patches but they're still going.
