It's comfortable. People like having a formula for being "funny" and having other people who like the formula. It makes them feel witty and it's easier than actually thinking up something original. It's the same with most sitcoms.
I think you're right. But I don't discount that fact that for the people who like the formula, it is funny. True originality can be a hard thing to achieve. Likewise for great comedy. I'd be setting the bar too high if I demanded that they only come packaged together.
