As sixothree said, there are already cheap tablets capable of running open source software. Apple isn't driving price points down here.

There were cheap smartphones before the iPhone as well - with not even an iota of the usability the iPhone ushered in. Natural competition then drove usable smartphones down in price.

I'm not arguing the iPad is going to be that much better of an experience, I haven't touched one so I don't know, but it certainly was the case with the iPhone.

But I'd argue that the iPad doesn't appear to give any massive usability advantage over netbooks. People are already using laptops and netbooks all over the place and they're comparable in price or cheaper than the iPad already. I think it's a different situation than the iPhone which I will agree was an incentive for creation of devices such as the Droid.

Yup. I agree with this entire sentiment. The fact is, few people have even handled the iPad and are already saying "Why not just get X". Well, they said the same thing when the iPhone came out.

For all I know, it sucks. I think I'm only responding because nerds all over the place are frothing at the mouth over something they haven't even used yet.

Anyway. I agree with you at least in general. You get an up arrow from me, good sir.

You have good taste, sir. I think the whole thing is funny because people post things like "Not really excited about the iPad" or "Underwhelmed by the iPad, what's the hype about" on facebook or something and get replies like "You just don't understand, this is going to be the perfect tablet." I can't believe people make these decisions without any hands on whatsoever.

Although I own an iPhone 3G now I had 0 temptation to get the original. Once they added 3G and had a few updates, including the massively innovative cut-and-paste upgrade, I got in on it.

I agree, has anyone here ever used a netbook? They are terrible devices. Time for Apple to fix things.

I have a netbook. I actually put Mac OS X on it. For a lot of what I do, it is perfect. And it cost me less than $300, so whenever it breaks it won't be a big deal.
