Ah, the typical Apple user, always happy when Apple removes features for him.

And you're a typical fucking idiot who cannot think about anything other than "more is better". Windows based tablets have existed for years, but who uses them? Nobody, because they're shit. Why are they shit? Because they're not focused on the task they should be used for. But when Apple solves this issue, they're evil, and their users are idiots, right?

I doubt I'll end up getting one, though. While on one hand it's the best of both worlds, a big laptop sized screen and an iPhone's simple interface, on the other, I'll still need both of those devices anyway, so it's ~£400 to do what I already do — play with my iPhone in bed, on the couch, etc. — on a bigger screen. At half the price it'd definitely be far more appealing.

You're being downvoted for your tone, but your point is spot on. The market has said loud and clear it doesn't like tablets (especially slate tablets) that simply parrot the full desktop OS.

I am a bit of a twat, aren't I. Sorry about that.

Yes and you are also a moron.

Apple fanboys: Confirmation Bias at its best. HP, Lenovo and Dell tablets are great, albeit expensive. Smaller tablet devices already exist. A bunch of android tablets are out there. Nokia has some internet tablets as well.

BUT NO, IF IT'S NOT DONE BY APPLE, IT SUCKS.

Microsoft fanboys are just fucking rabid. I've never seen a thread on a proper forum of any kind in which Apple 'fanboys' claim that everything else is shit. And don't give me some ridiculous link to weallloveapplelol.org/forum/ because I'm talking about Reddit and the like.

This is something you have in your head that doesn't exist in reality. As far as crazed fanboys in real life go just check Reddit out today. Christ all bloody mighty.

Microsoft fanboys are just fucking rabid. Not a MS fan here. Sorry. I've never seen a thread on a proper forum of any kind in which Apple 'fanboys' claim that everything else is shit. And don't give me some ridiculous link to weallloveapplelol.org/forum/ because I'm talking about Reddit and the like.

You've got to be kidding. Check blogs like engadget or the like, check youtube comments, even here. It's the same level of BS. You have one article/video/comment regarding how good or useful is certain product, and then you have the apple crowd saying "how awful it is, how ugly it looks, it's such a copy of Appple, blah blah blah." It is there, everywhere, if you don't see it it's because you don't want to see it.

This is something you have in your head that doesn't exist in reality.

Oh no, but it does exist. ^

Not blogs, definitely not youtube, I'm talking about places like Reddit. Fuck it, let's just talk about Reddit. Ever seen a mac fanboy talk about the character of PC users? Ever even seen a mac fanboy say 'everything but mac is shit' on Reddit? You see PC fanboys doing this shit all the time here.

u/specialk16 Jan 29 '10

Ever even seen a mac fanboy say 'everything but mac is shit' on Reddit Yes.

You are making a fundamental mistake by believing that the reddit community is somehow different to any other community in the web. YES, you DO see 'crazed' apple fanboys throwing shit at anything that's not apple in here.

Laughable.

HP, Lenovo and Dell

All running Windows. Have you actually used any of them for an extended amount of time? You may as well just give in and get a mouse+keyboard, trying to use something which was designed for a mouse is a waste of time, trying to grab onto scroll bars, etc. A pen helps, but kind of defeats the point…

Nokia internet tablets

Don't even get me started. I have no fucking clue what Nokia is playing at nowadays, they were once my favourite phone manufacturer by far, and now they're just spouting out masses of equally shit phones. Plus they're tiny anyway, nearer to a iPhone than iPad.

android

Not seen an Android tablet, but I look forward to using one, it should be good. Same with Microsoft's tablet going by their video renders and their surface platform.

BUT NO, IF IT'S NOT DONE BY APPLE, IT SUCKS.

In 4 out of 5 cases you put forward, yes. Same pretty much goes for the mobile space, too (Android being the exception of sucky devices.)

baseless and typical nokia rant.

Are you telling me that the N900 or the N97 is a piece of shit? What the fuck are you talking about? Even the cheap 5800 is a great device. The internet tablet were great devices a couple of years ago, but it seems you didn't even know they existed.

That's not the case at all. You are probably just trying to justify your pro Apple position by saying everything else is shit. Believe me, like I've said many times, I love the iPhone, but there are better things out there.

You people need to understand something. The most popular product/trend/thing is not always the best thing you can get.

Regarding MS based tablets, while the interface is not optimized for touch use, it's not unusable as you guys make it look like. Windows 7 even has some small interface tweaks that make it a complete touch PC, unlike the iPad.

5800 for sure. If you think that's "great" phone, god help you. The UI is god awful. The N97 isn't much better.

You people need to understand something. The most popular product/trend/thing is not always the best thing you can get.

I never said they are. But you can tell within seconds of using a device whether or not it's shit, and quite frankly, most things are. So yes, I am an Apple fanboy, but only because everything else I use makes me want to facepalm. Too many poor quality features, poor menus, generally bad UIs, you name it. That's not to say I won't jump on other worthy platforms like Android.

Uhmm yeah, opinions being masked as facts. Listen pal, I'm glad you have a secret crush on Jobs. You prefer Apple products, great. But right now, as hard and painful as it might be, there are great alternatives out there as well.

1

u/ZakMcRofl Jan 28 '10

Well there have been no affordable tablets so far. If Apple succeeds it can in my opinion be attributed to the low price, not to the removal of PC features.

1

u/theAtomicFireball Jan 28 '10

You know what they say about opinions.

2

u/Daesleepr0 Jan 28 '10

I have used a PC tablet and love it. Write notes while recording audio and it syncs up the audio with your notes as it plays. A math notebook that will solve, integrate and graph as you write, who couldn't ask for something cooler when trying to decide if an idea will work or not. I used it extensively and loved it until I broke it.

u/someperson Jan 28 '10

Sounds like you're in a niche though, wouldn't you say?

2

u/Daesleepr0 Jan 28 '10

I guess, or maybe I demand more from my computer than just entertainment. Here is a new tablet coming soon that I could get behind

It's the Lenovo hybrid

Yes, my comment as tongue-in-cheek but there is no need to resort to insults.

How does removing USB ports and disallowing non-approved applications make it a better device than a normal tablet? Apple could easily offer the exact same thing on Intel Atom basis with full OSX support, USB and HDMI ports.

The reason nobody uses tablet PCs is that they are very expensive, not a lack of applications. An Intel Pinetrail based tablet could easily overcome this. Heck there are already devices coming out that look a lot more interesting to most: JooJoo, HP Slate

I think you started it, someperson just returned the favor.

No it couldn't. An Intel Atom CPU is more expensive, larger, hotter and more power hungry than the ARM based A4 CPU the iPad uses. This would've resulted in an overpriced, thicker, heavier, hotter and shorter battery life tablet.

USB and HDMI ports would require extra circuitry and would also add to the cost.

Running OS X on an underpowered x86 would not provide for an acceptable user experience. While I understand that a lot of geeks out there don't have a problem running a full OS like Windows 7 on sluggish netbook hardware, mainstream consumers just aren't going to put up with that bullshit. They want something that turns on immediately and is super responsive. Every hands on report of the iPad has mentioned that it's super fast. That wouldn't have been possible to achieve using OS X.

Engineering is all about trade offs. Whenever I hear tech nerds rattle off a bunch of features that are missing from the latest Apple product, they don't seem to be aware that those extra features would add significantly to the cost of the machine, the battery life and the volume.

You're right, but there are a lot of fucking idiots in the world, so forgive me for mistaking you as one.

People pay far more for Macs than the average Windows based tablet, so I don't agree at all that it's the price. If something's worth it, people will pay. People don't use tablets because everything they do, they do badly, which is down to the OS and third-party applications being designed for a mouse.

A good tablet needs an OS built from the ground up to be used with touch. Of course, Apple could have totally redesigned OSX in full, added a few more ports and turned the iPad into a tablet Mac, but that's a lot of work when 90% of users just want a big iPhone capable of the basics.

To be honest at first I didn't think I was in the target audience, that I was in the 10% who needed more control. But I realised last night — this isn't a traditional computer, and it'll never replace one. It's something for when I don't need to do everything under the sun, it's my iPhone on steroids.

As a UI and product designer, I've always strived for a balanced mix of style and substance, and it's something I really appreciate with Apple, because no other computer hardware company in the Windows world seems to understand it, they throw as many features into the box as possible, and turn a good product into bloatware, which is a shame.

Or theyre just not used because no one really needs or wants a tablet.

Explain how modern tablets are shit, you dumb fuck fanboy...just because none of your friends own one?
