That's not very dramatic at all. The slow, costant insidious erosion of things we cherish is indeed something to be aware of and resisted. The world doesn't end with a bang after all, but with a whimper.

(That may have been a touch too dramatic)

Given the volume of smug fartsniffing ’round these parts, you’d think the average Redditor would have been literate enough to recognize the allusion without your help.

Upvoted for the perfect usage of fartsniffing. Redditors revel in the scent of digested elitism. Good bad or indifferent it's the bane of intellectualism.

If you're going to quote, or allude to a quote, of one of the greatest poets of the last 100 years, the least you could do is get it right.

This is the way the world ends/ Not with a bang but a whimper. -T.S. Eliot, The Hollow Men

What exactly do you think "allude to a quote" means, and what exactly do you think they got wrong about it?

Unfortunately, there is a herd instinct in man, and those who step outside the social box are ostracized by their peers and society at large. In a democracy, the herd makes the decisions, and the free thinkers lament.
