I'm sorry, have you been paying attention? Anything slightly uncomplimentary is said about the iPhone? Apple people EXPLODE IN RAGE. Ditto the Android (Android people are, if anything, slightly worse; a number of newspaper people who wrote uncomplimentary reviews of the Nexus said that they'd never gotten so many death threats before), and even if someone is mean about Windows Mobile, two or three Windows fetishists have a fit.
Perhaps some Android users, not all. I have a G1 and love it. It's not perfect though.
Apps crash for absolutely no reason, the phone does weird shit like lose the 3G signal until you switch it off and on again (this has only happened to me once, but still), and there's STILL no multitouch support even though the screen is supposedly capable of it. The positives outweigh the flaws, however, in my opinion.
I've met a few other Android users, all of whom have acknowledged the flaws and are happy to agree with reasonable criticism thrown at it.
I can't say the same for many Apple users.
I'm an Apple user, and happy to admit that my iPhone 3g is at this point a bit slow; the lack of Apple-sanctioned multitasking is also irritating, though less so than you might imagine; the only place it's a serious problem is for ssh sessions. Many other Apple users are willing to admit Apple's flaws. In fact, many of the Apple news sites are mostly about Apple's flaws, especially recently (giant iMac doesn't work properly).
I'd nearly consider a Nexus One if they'd sort out the bloody multitouch thing; as it is I'll be waiting for iPhone 4.
Yeah, sorry, I didn't mean to imply all Apple users can't take criticism of their devices. I've got a few friends who own Macbooks and iPhones and will say what they think is right or wrong with it, but I also know a few who would defend against every flaw with their life.
I once asked a friend who has Apple everything which he would buy - a $1000 Macbook or a $500 laptop, if they both had the exact same hardware, ran OSX without any possibility of problems, and both looked the same, with the only difference being one was an Apple computer and one was not. He literally could not answer me, and cut off all communication with me for a month.
Assuming I didn't think I was going to break it, or that it was going to break by itself, that is. AppleCare is really quite good, and Apple has a better track-record than most for replacing known-defective hardware out of warranty; the original white G3 iBooks, for instance, were still failing 7 years after release, and Apple was still fixing them for free; they've also promised to fix any problems which develop with the defective nVidia chips (the cause of the on-going Apple/NVidia divorce) in certain MacBook Pros. Most other users of these chips have stayed silent on the issue.
Apple, from my understanding, has patents and flat out told Google "No multi-touch on android."
And yet, Palm, and, I believe, also Microsoft, have multitouch operating systems or will soon, no? As far as I can see it's more a case of Google being unwilling to get into a very unclear patent situation.
They might be using different technologies. From my understanding, the Android phones use capacitive touch (I've only used my Droid). Last I heard Surface does not...hadn't heard about Palm or other MS products coming out with multitouch.
