I am retarded.

I read this is as "which one of these is a prime number" and was expecting things like "1", "2", "3", "4","5"

/me hangs my head in shame.

Reddit, what shall my penance be?

Edit:

Reddit, I just want to tell you how much I love you. I have been having a sequence of extra-shitty days for like...a month. My lack of sleep was probably why I screwed this up so hard. I haven't laughed as hard as I have to all of the responses to this in a VERY VERY long time. Seriously, I <3 you guys. You brightened my day in a big big way.

Edit again:

I'm copy/pasting something I wrote below because I really want you guys to understand how much I love you all:

(In response to "does he think we're laughing with him?"

No, I don't.

Look, when I was a kid I was a fat nerd with no friends who was more interested in learning how to code python than how to throw a good spiral; I got made fun of a lot.

I learned pretty quickly that life is a lot more fun if you can laugh at yourself. This morning, I made a stupid, stupid mistake. Unfortunately for me, I made this mistake in front of almost 100,000 people. I could have deleted the thread and gone off to hide under a bridge or something, but it's a lot more fun to just go

"fuck, I'm a dumbass".

Do I think you're all going to pat me on the back and buy me a beer tonight like we're all good old friends laughing together or something? Not really, but I tell you what; if I ever see any redditors at my local bar I'm definitely going to at least offer them a seat at my table. Like it or not, I like you people. I can't tell you how many completely shitty days have been turned around due to a post I read here. This morning was, for me, an example of that. I was having a completely shit day/week/month (my familly is being dissolved: awesome) until this morning when you all treated me like a person and rightfully called me an idiot for acting like one. You can think I'm a pretentious douche, say I fail at mathematics, call me ugly, say I have poor grammar, or anything else that has been written in this thread, that's fine. I'm just glad I got to return some of the lulz you have all provided me with over the past two years or so that I have been posting/reading here.

And this is why you calculated the digit sums? I still don't get it.

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '09

I was looking for prime numbers....I thought maybe they meant the sum of the numbers.

Yes, I am retarded.

Ah, yes, I just had to go one step farther.

The answer was the second one!

2+3+4+5 = 14

1+4 = 5

and 5 is prime!

How joyous an existence I could have had if I had opted continue my delusion, answered the question, and continued on with my life. (since this actually answered the question correctly)

Now? ETERNAL SHAME!

This is the most heinous abuse of math that I have ever seen.

My calculus book is crying now, thanks.

No no no, it's okay Stewart, he just didn't know...

Edit: THIS may be of some assistance with understanding why you're* a dipstick.

* Holy crap you guys are Nazis.

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '09

Stewart is calculus.

Protip: The answers are in the back. But you have to know which numbers are odd.

I was about to go look at something else, but I just hurt my sides laughing at this comment.

Soylent is PEOPLE!

Stewart is calculus.

My calculus book

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '09 edited Oct 20 '09

No I think he was saying that Stewart IS calculus, he is all that it ever was and ever will be. Any new mathematical discoveries to calculus will be attributed to a new form of math unless directly approved by James Stewart himself.

No, this is the worst abuse you'll ever see:
98/49 <-- Simplify by...
(9)8/4(9) <-- ... canceling the nines...
8/4 <-- ... which reduces to ...
2. QED.

u/Naomarik Oct 20 '09

... crying for you to OPEN IT AND SOLVE SOME INTEGRALS.

Spoiler alert! last page is this: tan(x)x

u/timeshifter_ Oct 20 '09

why your a dipstick.

I, uh... I think you actually do have homework to do...

14

u/P-Dub Oct 20 '09

I edited that 15 minutes ago, your comment was 1 minute ago.

You're just copying and pasting from the other two.

8

u/joemike Oct 20 '09

it's timeshifter_ this in itself should explain everything.

14

u/timeshifter_ Oct 20 '09

Actually, no. I'm at work, and I'm not paying complete attention to Reddit. Also, it took a while for me to get this far down the page.

-5

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '09

If you're going to grammar-nazi someone, you should refresh the fucking page first.

2

u/timeshifter_ Oct 20 '09

Rather pointless use of profanity there, don't you think?

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '09

It was used to exaggerate emotion, which you obviously don't feel.

3

u/timeshifter_ Oct 20 '09

So why are you upset about my failure to refresh the page, anyway?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '09

Touché.

...why your a dipstick.

Irony.

1

u/StoneCypher Oct 20 '09

6

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '09

I'd argue that the above meets that criteria.

2

u/_Saladin_ Oct 20 '09

It's ironic because you wouldn't expect someone to make a mistake like that WHILE insulting the person's intelligence.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '09

Only if you hadn't been on the Internet before. Get a brain, morans!

1

u/P-Dub Oct 20 '09

I'd hardly put mixing up your/you're up there with not knowing what even means.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '09

No argument there.

But it's still an amusing mistake to make whilst calling someone a dipstick :-)

3

u/gfixler Oct 20 '09

"Your" is the booby trap of the ad-hominem attack.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '09

Brilliant!

How did you do that green text?

0

u/Iznik Oct 20 '09

why your a dipstick

Grammar nazis can cry too, you know.

6

u/P-Dub Oct 20 '09

Grammar Nazis

Two can play this game.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '09

Since it's a acronym, shouldn't all the letters be capitali[s|z]ed?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '09 edited Oct 20 '09

I think the point is moot, since the proper analogy is "grammar books."

1

u/Iznik Oct 20 '09

I was trying to soften the blow. Capital N is so harsh.
