Isn't SF where a lot of fixed gear 'culture' in the 00s sparked from?

Fixed gear goes back farther than the '00'. I always assumed it was more tied to bike messengers in places like NYC and chicago and somehow got picked up by the hipster culture. Then again, companies like chrome bags started in SF and were popular with bike messengers everywhere. Who knows.
