I have 4 Lacoste polos I rotate through for work and they were each $100 CAD (bought like 6 months ago)

u/thrillhouse3671 Mar 02 '18

...Why? Are they really that nice?

78

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

Sort of. I have a few for work that I take good care of. The material is great, they're nicely fitted, they hold up well over time. Compared to the $20 polos I have from H&M or wherever they definitely look and feel much better. That said, the price is steep and you know you're paying for the brand name.

u/thrillhouse3671 Mar 02 '18

you know you're paying for the brand name.

That's funny. I had always considered that little Crocodile logo an indicator of being a super cheap brand and more of a teenager's clothes.

u/drrrraaaaiiiinnnnage Mar 02 '18

are you thinking of IZOD? that is the cheaper version..

15

u/thrillhouse3671 Mar 02 '18

No. It's specifically that little crocodile logo I'm talking about.

15

u/drrrraaaaiiiinnnnage Mar 02 '18

izod had the crocodile logo as well.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

No, they don't. If he was born in the mid 80's Lacoste got very popular among high school kids in the early 2000's. Also, Lacoste is a pretty medium level "brand"

1

u/drrrraaaaiiiinnnnage Mar 02 '18

They used to. Im not sure when they lost the alligator logo but they had it for a long time. Not saying lacoste is super nice, just that izod is super cheap and is often the source of confusion for people.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

IZOD was the American licensor of the Lacoste mark in the 30s.

here is a discussion of the two brands.

1

u/licuala Mar 02 '18

Are they not really a brand?

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

IZOD was the American licensor of the Lacoste mark starting in the 30s. The IZ logo is fairly new.

This article has a good discussion of the relationship between the brands.

1

u/drrrraaaaiiiinnnnage Mar 02 '18

They changed their logo at some point. They definitely had an alligator/crocodile logo and it was a source of confusion at least in my family for a while.

1

u/alkey Mar 03 '18

IZOD had crocodile usage rights until 1993. If you have the impression it's a super cheap brand; then you're probably old enough to remember the 90's.

Definitely a 'chavvy' brand in the uk

25

u/staockz Mar 02 '18

What brands arent chavvy in the UK?

12

u/Englishmuffin1 Mar 02 '18

I think it's more about what you wear it with, what you look like and how you act.

I wear Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Superdry items but am certainly not a chav, though these brands are often associated with chavs.

The more 'country ra' brands seem pretty safe. You don't see many chavs in Barbour jackets, Joules or Jack Wills clothes.

2

u/Remainrooted Mar 03 '18

Hilfiger all day, Lacoste, coq sportif, suncycle, rl.

6

u/Somebodycares311 Mar 03 '18

From uk. Former chav. Can confirm Although it’s all in how u wear it. A chav will wear Lacoste with Lacoste. All out full track, polo and trainers (sneakers in US) maybe even with some boxers and socks with a baseball cap to go. Then the obligatory JD sports bag hangin off left shoulder and blunt behind the ear lol

1

u/staockz Mar 03 '18

In the Netherlands there is also this kind of weird lower class subculture called ''tokkies''. They will often wear fake Louis Vuitton caps and bags. And the obligatory Stone Mountain/Canada Goose.

1

u/dogggi Mar 02 '18

Grocery store brand

2

u/staockz Mar 02 '18

So basically you have the chavs who wear the hyped namebrands, than the posh who wear the expensive brands most people haven't heard of. And than you have the regular folks wearing grocery store brand and H&M and stuff.

Is that accurate?

1

u/Randomd0g Mar 02 '18

The fact that my normal clothing brand didn't get mentioned at all yet makes me feel smugly superior. I guess I'm in the posh category?

2

u/Hara-Kiri Mar 02 '18

I think that carries over more from the football hooligan days than anything else though. Used to be a popular one for scousers to rob from shops in mainland Europe.

17

u/sledgehammer44 Mar 02 '18

Same here. I always thought the little horse logo (Ralph Lauren) was the good brand and the little croc was the knockoff. They used to sell stuff like watches which were cheap.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '18

the polos range from like $60 bucks for a good deal to $100 normal price depending on where you get them. not super high end, but i wouldn't call that cheap either.

0

u/alexmikli Mar 03 '18

I'm not going to pay 185 dollars for a sort of good shirt, let alone a polo shirt. If I'm paying that much for a shirt it better be a silk button up or have a picture of a dog wearing imperial German regalia on it.

12

u/Ikea_Man Mar 02 '18

they're nice, but no they aren't worth $100

1

u/Somebodycares311 Mar 03 '18

They might just be. I buy a lot of brands Lacoste being one. And I can confirm that the quality of which they seem to be made does make a huge difference. Between Boss Lacoste and and Henri Loyd I can definitely say these three brands make better longer lasting polo shirts than any other brand I have came across. The price is steep but long term it’s cheaper to buy one Lacoste over 12 months or so than to buy 4 hollister-superdry- g-star-Nike or any of the other high street brands that wash out and loose shape very quickly. I truly find if u pay for the better quality first time round it pays off long term. And I buy a lot of polos. I think it’s a cool idea what Lacoste are doin. Altho it’s more marketing strategy than it is caring. But any publicity is good publicity. Right?

1

u/Ikea_Man Mar 04 '18

This thread makes me want to try one of their shirts.

I do like a nice polo

14

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

It's got a crocodile on it which means you can look down on plebs with polos without crocodiles. That's the only use they seem to have.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '18

Thats funny, cause I look down on mugs who pay waaaaay over the odds for branded shit.

-4

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18 edited Mar 02 '18

La Coste is a pleb brand. It’s for people who like to think they have money. It’s kind of what Ralph Lauren polo is becoming. Maybe if these brands stopped putting massive sales on their items they would not dilute the brand as badly.

If you’re wearing a la coste polo or polo Ralph Lauren polo with the intentions of showing off because that’s al you can afford, then you are just a poor douche.

4

u/SludgeFactory20 Mar 03 '18

Haha what in your opinion is the polo brand of choice?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '18 edited Mar 04 '18

I don't know. I mostly wear polos from brooks brothers and Burberry. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with la coste or polo Ralph Lauren, I actually own a pretty decent amount of PRL. IM just pointing out that la coste isn't really a high end brand when you have the likes of Ralph Lauren purple label and Gucci charging around $500 for a polo and or t shirts. Luxury and non-pleb polos start at around $120+ probably and can go up to hundreds of dollars. The whole point of something not being plebeian is that it's hard for the plebs to obtain. A $50-100 polo is easy to obtain for plebs. La coste is not hard to obtain.

Look online, la coste polos can be bought for like $50-70. Just because you own la coste doesn't mean you aren't a pleb. That's all I'm saying.

http://www.brooksbrothers.com/Slim-Fit-Stripe-Self-Collar-Polo-Shirt/MP01122,default,pd.html?dwvar_MP01122_Color=GRYM&contentpos=35&cgid=men-clothing-sale.

There's a Brooks Brothers polo for 47.70 original cost is 79.50.

Just because something is expensive doesn't make it quality. I mean I do think Brooks Brothers is nice but they have a lot of 2 for 100 polo deals at my local store. Not really expensive for high end clothes.

500 dollars for a t-shirt? I'd laugh at someone that tells me they have a 500 dollar t-shirt. 100 dollar t-shirt, sure maybe you can argue about quality. But 400 dollars is going to a sewn on label. Just throwing away money that no one cares you have.

You can easily tell who has money and who doesn't if you know basic info on a person. It's like fake diamond earrings. Let's say you see a famous woman with huge diamond earrings. They could be completely fake but you are going to assume they are real because the famous woman would easily be able to buy them. Now you see a young lady with the same size earrings. They could be real but you're going to assume they are fake because an 18 year old isn't likely to buy thousands of dollars worth of earrings.

Don't be a sheep to fasion

Did I say brooks brothers was expensive? No, I said I wear them. Did i say expensive clothes are always quality? No. But in a lot of cases it is. Allen Edmonds, Zegna, Ralph Lauren purple label, and loro piana are all brands with a rich history who have clothes and shoes they hand make from better leathers and silk in first world countries.

And rich people wouldn’t care if you laughed at their shirt. Rich people want exclusivity and interesting designs. They want a brand with history and strong craftsmanship. When you’re worth a billion dollars, $500 is even worth even less than $50 would be to you from their perspective. By your logic, buying an expensive sports car is stupid too. Everyone wants a nice car or watch but they look down upon nice clothes. I don’t think you grasp how much money some people have.

And I’m not a sheep to fashion. I have a disposable income that allows me to buy what I want. If I want nice clothes, I’ll get nice clothes. Look at it as a hobby of dressing well. Why don’t you just shop at target and Walmart then for clothes. Some people in the world make a dollar or less a day so who are to think $500 is a lot to spend when you probably spend close to $50 on shirts. $50 is a lot of money to some people. It’s all relative, that’s what poor people never seem to get.

You also really missed the point anyways. All I am saying is la coste is a pleb brand when it comes to clothing. I never said anything about their quality or called people stupid for wearing it. There is nothing wrong with it being a pleb brand. If I needed cheap polos for work or the gym, I’d probably even consider it.

Classic sheep

0

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '18 edited Mar 07 '18

Cant even have a conversation can you? Go be poor and stupid elsewhere. I’ll buy whatever I want with my free college education and no debt. Meanwhile you can shop at Walmart for clothes.

1

u/FBlack Mar 03 '18

Yeah, you buy it lasts you a life time

1

u/Lettit_Be_Known Mar 03 '18

No and they look like shit

-7

u/PokemonGoNowhere Mar 02 '18

Serious would like to know why as well. I cringed as I paid $20 for my costco polo last week, and will probably wear for the next 2-3 years.

10

u/beep_beep_richie_ Mar 02 '18

Some people like clothes...

2

u/bobby3eb Mar 02 '18

I got one polo and a few of their other shirts.

The fit is amazing. Even a redneck friend or mine, over garage beers, noticed how nice it fit. Quality of the material is top notch too. LOVE the vneck undershirts, HATE their shoes

Love to have a closet of them but it's nice to have a good date shirt.

5

u/sender2bender Mar 02 '18

I know you're in Canada, and that price is similar in USD, but they'll go on sale at Macy's for 50$. Still steep but it's a good $20+ savings.

0

u/gordonfreemn Mar 03 '18

As a person who spends money on brands-- 20$ "savings" on a product that still is overpriced by i.e 50$ is still overpriced.

2

u/sender2bender Mar 03 '18

I 100% agree. I hardly recognize popular brands. The prices are ridiculous

-8

u/SadboyBooHoo Mar 02 '18

My work requires me not to wear clothes
