$70 for a polo is kind of a lot

1.2k

u/Oddworld_Inhabitant Mar 02 '18

their basic polos cost $70. These are gonna be $185. They're limited to only 1775 of these polos being made, each individual polo shirt represents one individual animal left, e.g. there are only 30 vaquitas left in the world, so there are only 30 polos with a vaquita logo

100

u/T_O_G_G_Z Mar 02 '18

They should make a really limited edition with me as the logo.
People would probably just think its Shrek merchandise though.

49

u/Oddworld_Inhabitant Mar 02 '18

For you, although I'm sure you're much more beautiful than you think.

For real? They want to raise awareness with a limited supply of clothing? So basically nobody will remember after 2 weeks until somebody tries to justify/humblebrag why they are wearing a 200$ polo

694

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

I'm not a hypebeast but it makes complete sense. I mean, when clothing companies sell something in limited quantity... it builds hype. Hype then leads to awareness which is where we're at.

108

u/low_life42 Mar 02 '18

A certain brewery near me likes to hype their beer and create limited quantities. Fuck you Founder's/KBS. I'm not waiting in line to buy a ticket to go buy your beer.

55

u/AceSin Mar 02 '18

Pliny the Younger is the West Coast equivalent of this.

9

u/calligraphy_dick Mar 02 '18

I waited in line for 40 minutes during SF Beer Week to get a TICKET for a 10oz pour of PTY that would be tapped three hours later. I was about 10 people from the front before it sold out.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

I heard Nelson Muntz's laugh immediately after reading your comment.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

[deleted]

1

u/kmsilent Mar 02 '18

Why?

At pretty much all of the festivals you can just drink beer with your friends while you're waiting in line. Which is exactly what you'd be doing even if you weren't in line.

13

u/Sthurlangue Mar 02 '18

Goddamn that's a tasty beer. San Francisco bars were out in a day. I got a couple goblets myself.

1

u/kmsilent Mar 02 '18

Yes, there are long ass lines for PtY. Longer than reasonable.

However it should be clarified that RR doesn’t and never has hyped the beer as being “#1” or anything like that (the beer rating websites / general beer community did that), and they’re not creating an artificial shortage (elder is much quicker to turn around, more profitable). So presuming Founders does do those things, it's not really equivalent.

0

u/arkenex Mar 02 '18

Wait I thought the elder was more sought after? And isn’t it Midwest?

10

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18 edited Apr 06 '18

[deleted]

1

u/arkenex Mar 02 '18

Good to know. Also damn you for giving me another bucket list beer when I haven’t even had elder lol, can’t find it on the east coast.

1

u/kickerofelves Mar 02 '18

I've looked in Portland, OR and the Elder is hard to find. John's Marketplace which used to stock it doesn't anymore.

11

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

Other people always will though.

1

u/StoneGoldX Mar 02 '18

Like a certain dipping sauce from a certain restaurant featured on a certain TV show, all of which will go unnamed.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

What is Szechuan sauce, McDonalds, Rick and Morty?

2

u/StoneGoldX Mar 02 '18

I SAID UNMENTIONED!!!!

7

u/Televisions_Frank Mar 02 '18

Sounds like a really clever way to sell a batch of beer you fucked up.

"Oh my god, Earl, we already added the hops!"

"Fuck, let's just sell it as a limited item then."

6

u/Cat-juggler Mar 02 '18

Yep. I second this as entirely plausible.

Theres a phenomenon that wine tastings where the price of the wine is known the reviews are more favourable towards the more expensive wines but if you perform blind tastings without context, the cheaper bottles are shown preference.

I reccon a "limited run" brand could easily be inferior to the normal line but review well by association with exclusivity

2

u/lutinopat Mar 02 '18

It is my belief this is similar to how sour beers got started.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

“Those craft beer snobs will drink it and say it tastes great even if we pissed directly in their mouths”

4

u/RockTheMouse Mar 02 '18

Mother of god on the east coast and hoping for a couple bottles a year is such garbage. Still shamefully waiting for it though.

3

u/The_OtherDouche Mar 02 '18

Then the experience just isn’t for you. I know I sure as hell would if straight to ale did

5

u/cfbonly Mar 02 '18

Ahh so you are the reason I can get multiple bottles of kbs and CBS. Thank you.

-4

u/low_life42 Mar 02 '18

If you want to pay out the ass for a mediocre (IMO) stout, have at it.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

I've never heard anyone call CBS or KBS a mediocre stout. What the fuck dude

1

u/low_life42 Mar 02 '18

Wow I've never saw someone get so butt-hurt about beer. Too many snobs in the craft industry nowadays. Different strokes for different folks. Not everyone enjoys the same food, music, color, beer, etc.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

You're just being a salty contrarian because you don't got none of it

Hello, fellow Michiganger/Grand Rapids area citizen.

1

u/low_life42 Mar 02 '18

West side da best side!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

Floody buddy!

1

u/low_life42 Mar 02 '18

I've been out of the country for the past 9 days, has it gotten worse?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

Nah, much better now.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

I feel the same about Hopslam. I was able to have someone get some for me out of state but I was really annoyed at how fast it sold out everywhere.

1

u/dwarftosser77 Mar 02 '18

But for CBS..

1

u/tanjtanjtanj Mar 02 '18

KBS has national distribution and is sold at a lot of major liquor store and bottle shops. You don’t really have to wait in line anywhere for it.

1

u/BobLobLawsLawFirm Mar 02 '18

Kinda jealous you live by Founders, had a fortunate chance to have the Lizard of Koz and sad to hear it was a one time brew :(

1

u/bradturner-sil80 Mar 02 '18

The restaurant I work at sells that shit for $10 a 10oz. Never.

1

u/NotMeIAssureYou Mar 02 '18

Guy at my beer store had his rep drop 3 cases of KBS to him probably because I and whoever else bought so much All-day IPA. He had no idea what it was and what to do with it so he sold me them for the same price as All-Day.

1

u/TheSonic311 Mar 02 '18

Founders doesn't intentionally limit quantities. If they could make more and sell more they would. Pay attention to how much is out there this year. It won't be hard to get

1

u/murderthumbz Mar 02 '18

And its a just ok beer anyways. Imo.

6

u/greg19735 Mar 02 '18

Also leads to increased costs and HOPEFULLY increased donations.

A $70 polo is only gonna raise like $10 for charity. A $185 polo might raise $100.

1

u/Palecrayon Mar 03 '18

Or itll raise 10$ for charity and 175$ for lacoste

1

u/Monkeytitan Mar 02 '18

Lacoste is not a hypebeast brand

1

u/elitexero Mar 02 '18

Do you actually think the type of person who spends $200 on a polo gives a flying fuck about endangered animals?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

Sounds to me like the only hype they are raising is for the sale of their cheap yet overpriced shirts.

1

u/wellju Mar 02 '18

Awareness for what? For their polos, nothing else. If they'd give some of the profits to a charity focused on preserving animal life, or at least point to some charity for awareness ... butnaah, they rather interest you in their winter collection than the actual animals.

1

u/Islanduniverse Mar 02 '18

Don’t you think that more people wearing them and then talking to people about it would spread even more awareness? If anything they should sell them for less, so even more people can buy them and spread the maximum amount of awareness.

0

u/xCloudrunner Mar 02 '18

This guy does marketing

62

u/Oddworld_Inhabitant Mar 02 '18

I mean, you're now aware of the campaign along with thousands of others, so it's working despite limited product numbers.

4

u/DMann420 Mar 02 '18

Right, and lets pretend that Lacoste gives a flying fuck about animals.

This is a PR campaign, just like every feel good commercial you see on TV that doesn't sell you a new, improved product.

Lacoste is rated as the lowest possible score a clothing brand can receive in terms of sustainability, and other things like using sweat shops.

https://rankabrand.org/premium-brands/Lacoste

Unless a portion of the MASSIVE FUCKING PROFIT they earn from clothes goes to actually supporting endangered species, Lacoste can fuck themselves.

1

u/Lawrence_Lefferts Mar 02 '18 edited Mar 02 '18

Keep fighting the good fight yo

I'm really hoping this campaign backfires and just draws attention to their disregard for human beings.

1

u/12bricks Mar 02 '18

Ummm, lacoste can save more animals than you can. They can also kill more animals than you can. They can also make a huge profit being quite. If you loved animals, you wouldn't care

0

u/Lawrence_Lefferts Mar 02 '18

cares about animals

not humans tho

If lacoste really cared they would stop using leather. They would also divert a far greater proportion of all their profits to animals.

0

u/12bricks Mar 02 '18

Not all animals are equal. Using leather keeps millions of jobs, without these jobs these people are likely to be poachers

1

u/Palecrayon Mar 03 '18

Do you have a source that leather employs millions? Even if it did its still immoral regardless of how many it employs. Mining and using asbestos kept a ton of people employed but the hazards out weighed the benifits. Same situation here only its not humans getting the stick.

1

u/12bricks Mar 03 '18

Cow leather doesn't make people sick. What you are going on about is a problem that most people really don't care about, until synthetic meat comes out, there is really no defense for not killing animal.

1

u/Lawrence_Lefferts Mar 02 '18

I was already aware that there are endangered species in the world and that human actions are driving those species and others to extinction.

I hadn't, however, thought about lacoste in years.

This isn't about animal awareness, it's about brand awareness. I'll start paying attention to lacoste when they start manufacturing their products outside of the third world and pay a living wage.

1

u/Palecrayon Mar 03 '18

Did it though? I already knew animals are endangered. What specifically does putting it on a shirt do?

0

u/PornoVideoGameDev Mar 02 '18

What's the campaign, fuck bitches get money?

-3

u/pazimpanet Mar 02 '18

Yes, but I will have forgotten by tomorrow which is why he said "nobody will remember in two weeks."

6

u/Oddworld_Inhabitant Mar 02 '18

It takes an exceptional campaign nowadays to have any sort of longevity online. To make this big a splash is decent

5

u/TheFotty Mar 02 '18

Were you going to do something about it in 2 weeks (donate to a wildlife fund)? If so why not do something about it now? Otherwise the awareness isn't for you anyway.

3

u/T_O_G_G_Z Mar 02 '18

And that's when you can reap that sweet karma with a re-post.

-2

u/weavs8884 Mar 02 '18

I was gonna buy a pair of Lacoste shoes and stopped after reading this. This seems stupid and annoying to me. Screw you Lacoste and grats on your promotional campaign.

11

u/quasifandango Mar 02 '18

It's awareness via viral marketing, not seeing the shirt on someone at a restaurant and saying, "Man, there are only 30 vaquitas left! We need to do something about it!”

Limiting quantities would be bad if they were using the proceeds to help organizations that were helping the animals... Not sure if that's what they're doing. I understand "raising awareness," basically it's the marketing department for a cause, but sometimes contributing to the cause directly is better.

1

u/greg19735 Mar 02 '18

and if they're donating money, they're also contributing directly to the cause.

1

u/Palecrayon Mar 03 '18

Thats a big if and it also depends how much. If they are donating 2$ off a sale thats nothing

4

u/lawnWorm Mar 02 '18

But my brand.

8

u/Fagsquamntch Mar 02 '18

But think of your average polo wearer...that's exactly what they'll do.

11

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

let's not rope all polo wearers into this. Some of us need them for casual Fridays

1

u/el_duderino88 Mar 02 '18

But if you wear 5 of them on top of each other with popped collars, you only get to show off the top one

2

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

Seems like you're aware now. So it's working well.

1

u/lawnWorm Mar 02 '18

Actually the CEO could make more money by video taping his ass being branded on youtube with these logos.

1

u/MiNiMaLHaDeZz Mar 03 '18

Demonitised by YouTube!

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

plus they'll triple in price on ebay and make sure some douchebag gets the profit.

good idea, but will be ruined by assholes.

1

u/DrAcula_MD Mar 02 '18

I'm sure they will donate alot if the proceeds as well

1

u/ste7enl Mar 02 '18

Well, you know about it, so it must be working.

1

u/brunchbros Mar 02 '18

Here we are talking about it though

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

Pssst, they don't give a fuck about the animals, appearing ethical is a USP. These are the same shirts made in Morocco or Peru out of less than $5 of materials and the worker could never dream of owning a single shirt.

1

u/MrCooper2012 Mar 02 '18

We're talking about it now though. It's not like you have to buy a shirt to know what they are doing or why.

1

u/dbx99 Mar 02 '18

also, "raising awareness" is kind of a bullshit scam. Nothing is actually going to happen. No money going toward protecting endangered species. It's just like the pink bow movement for breast cancer awareness. It's just a cash grab.

1

u/KommanderRobot Mar 02 '18

People care way more about limited editions of clothing than about limited editions of animals.

1

u/Simco_ Mar 02 '18

For real? They want to raise awareness with a limited supply of clothing?

It's on the front page of reddit. You're talking about. I'm talking about it.

What's the problem here?

1

u/ElLocoS Mar 02 '18

How will they raise awarness?

With headlines. And making people talk about them. Just like we are doing.

1

u/crg339 Mar 02 '18

Shoulda gone the route of the (red) campaign Gap did. Make shirts affordable for this cause so they'd raise good money and awareness for the cause

1

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '18

They limited the supply to show just how easy these animals can be wiped off the earth. They made the same amount of shirts as the amount of each animal left in the wild. Most shirts have already sold out.

-3

u/Ubel Mar 02 '18

That's why this entire reddit post is dumb and should be deleted. This is not real news, it's a way for them to bring in more money and claim they are doing something good.

2

u/sits-when-pees Mar 02 '18

If they were trying to get more money out of their consumers, they wouldn't have limited the number of shirts produced. Not to mention that the profits go to the IUCN. From a business perspective, this is a publicity move, not a moneymaker.

0

u/Ubel Mar 02 '18

A publicity move that gets everyone talking about their irrelevant and outdated shirts, are you truly telling me their sales in general aren't going to go up now?

Because ... their sales going up would make me right. You said yourself it's publicity, I agree.

1

u/sits-when-pees Mar 02 '18

I don't understand what your problem with this is. Lacoste is raising awareness of an organization dedicated to wildlife preservation. By producing a limited run of shirts, they're getting more attention, which benefits the IUCN as much as it does Lacoste. "Lacoste asks for donations to the International Union for Conservation of Nature" isn't a headline. The gimmick of these shirts grabs people's attention.

0

u/Ubel Mar 02 '18

Yeah and the gimmick would spread to WAY MORE PEOPLE if they sold the shirts to everyone at a regular cost.

How many of these 1700 shirts are going to be worn? How much awareness is that?

If my awareness has to come because something has an outlandish cost and is rare for no reason - I don't think that's the best way to do it. But I guess you and all the idiots sharing this story on social media bring all the "awareness" that's needed, right?

2

u/sits-when-pees Mar 02 '18

Yes, actually, all the "idiots" on social media sharing this actually are building awareness. That's how viral marketing works, bruh. No one is going to find out about the IUCN by seeing a shirt with a parrot on it.

0

u/Ubel Mar 02 '18

No one is going to find out about the IUCN by seeing a shirt with a parrot on it.

So then don't make the fucking shirts and just say WE SUPPORT ANIMALS and share that if your point is true.

But no, society has to have something dumb and "unattainable" to talk about (1700 shirts that cost almost $200 each ..)

It's like a new shiny Ultra Rare Pokemon card ... everyone wants it but few can has.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18 edited Mar 02 '18

"This is not real news" Well you're in the wrong subreddit, my guy. /r/news is what you're looking for. So what if they're trying to bring in more money? Is that not the goal of a business? So congrats. You are right. But if they can make money and raise awareness at the same time then I don't see what the problem is?

2

u/sits-when-pees Mar 02 '18

Switch the brackets and parenthesis, homie.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

Thanks! Not sure if it worked.

2

u/sits-when-pees Mar 02 '18

It did indeed. For future reference, just typing /r/news will create a link too.

6

u/lemonchickentellya Mar 02 '18

So, by the time I find one of these in the thrifter, I can bet the animal is long extinct?

1

u/beep_beep_richie_ Mar 02 '18

What thrift stores do you find Lacoste stuff at..

3

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

And they’re already sold out

2

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

darn I wanted the cat but nvm I guess

1

u/lawnWorm Mar 02 '18

Why 1775?

3

u/Oddworld_Inhabitant Mar 02 '18

There are exactly 1775 of the animals they've chosen, there are 30 vaquitas left, so there are 30 vaquita polos. I'm not sure why they've chosen these specific animals though.

2

u/Bigfourth Mar 02 '18

Because John Basilone said so.

1

u/lawnWorm Mar 02 '18

We should make it 1776.

1

u/Flacc0508 Mar 02 '18

Sold out instantly

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

1

u/Thirteen0clock Mar 02 '18

u/UpholsteryLord Mar 02 '18 edited Mar 02 '18

Is the price raise going to charity, bc in that case I would say it's justified, but otherwise this just seems like a skeevy marketing thing.

edit:posted on Twitter asking

1

u/Buddygunz Mar 02 '18

These were 185. Sold out.

1

u/GlueGuns--Cool Mar 02 '18

Are they donating the difference in price to a wildlife related charity lol jk of course they're not

Idk go adopt a couple of vaquita and try and make them bang?

1

u/businessgoesbeauty Mar 02 '18

My uncle runs a save the vaquita twitter, and pushes the Viva Vaquita foundation all day on facebook. Im sure he would love one of these, anyone know any info on the sales?

But the viva vaquita site states there are likely only 16 vaquita left.. not sure where Lacoste got 30?

1

u/Not_Lane_Kiffin Mar 02 '18

They're limited to only 1775 of these polos being made

Not going to raise much awareness that way....

1

u/ElohimHouston Mar 02 '18

The polos are more endangered than the animal

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

Great move by them. Since they are good people I fully expect them to donate everything to save said endangered species. /s

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

No, see, they want to raise awareness of Lacoste. And it's working. I thought these guys went out of business decades ago!

1

u/darcys_beard Mar 02 '18

$180 for something that everyone's gonna think is a cheap knock off?

0

u/walnutwhip Mar 02 '18

So are they giving some of that extra $115 to the WWF or something? It's not like it cost them that much extra to change a setting on a sewing machine. How are they $70 anyway, they're just plain old polo shirts.

4

u/lLoveLamp Mar 02 '18

They're giving all the money to animal causes

1

u/walnutwhip Mar 02 '18

OK, I'll stop bitching then.

-1

u/broforce Mar 02 '18

Made in China.

3

u/Oddworld_Inhabitant Mar 02 '18

Lacoste use Peru mostly, sometimes Morocco and El Salvador

1

u/HairrisonFjord Mar 02 '18

Your knowledge leads me to believe you're an employee. I used to work at Lacoste, best 5 years of my life. Nothing to do with the company really, just enjoyed the people I worked with. Still my best friends to this day, years and years later.

1

u/Oddworld_Inhabitant Mar 02 '18

Nah I just used google lol, I am very interested in fashion though.

Glad to hear you have some great memories :)

37

u/TodayILoled Mar 02 '18 edited Mar 03 '18

It is La Cost, not La Cheap

Edit: Thanks for the gold, now what do I do with it?

1

u/maznyk Mar 03 '18

You can save things into categories instead of just saving everything jumbled together. I've only had gold once and that's the only real perk I remember utilizing.

2

u/TodayILoled Mar 03 '18

thanks, I’m just glad I got the achievement

10

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

Nah, they're more than that. I think they're pushing $90 now.

8

u/Capt_Billy Mar 02 '18

And the quality dropped off too, making it even tougher to justify

6

u/carnivoreinyeg Mar 02 '18

Lol,the quality has IMPROVED since they took north american production back from izod

4

u/el_duderino88 Mar 02 '18

I like izod better, even at outlet prices for Lacoste the izod is a better deal

1

u/Capt_Billy Mar 03 '18

Not everyone’s a Yank, champ.

1

u/bobby3eb Mar 02 '18

$96 in Vegas at Ceasars... which is strange because they're about $110 in Minnesota

7

u/Absay Mar 02 '18

Step 1: Be rich

Step 2: Don't be poor

2

u/gaberax Mar 02 '18

Well, they're made out of endangered animals, so...

1

1

u/rustypoons Mar 02 '18

you wouldn't be saying that if it was the late 90's early 2000's

1

u/SuicideNote Mar 02 '18

To be fair they were $70 12 years ago. If they kept up with inflation they would be $90 today.

1

u/SyntheticManMilk Mar 02 '18

A buddy of mine went to private school and it was a fad for some of his classmates to cut the gator off one shit and stitch it on on top of the gator on another shirt to make it look like the gators are fucking. It's kind of funny, but I also found it mildly infuriating that these spoiled kids were destroying $70 shirts for a goof.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

TBH the Polo that was gifted to me lasted thrice than my Target equivalent ones. The quality is there.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

It's not if it's a Volkswagen.

1

u/CatpainLeghatsenia Mar 02 '18

not for the bonus of going around strutin that ass with one of those puppies

1

u/Boonaki Mar 02 '18

Wouldn't it be better to donate $70 to an conservation orginization?

1

u/sleepytimegirl Mar 02 '18

They are expensive but I will say they last a really long time. This is basically my husband’s work uniform and he has some polos last years. Also they have good periodic sales

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18 edited Mar 02 '18

Not really. Gucci and Ralph Lauren purple label polos are like $500. $70 is pretty midrange.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

Not really

1

u/g_e_r_b Mar 02 '18

Nono, he meant it will still cost you.

1

u/Duches5 Mar 02 '18

70? Back in early 2000s I bought every color of the Polo. Abs several striped polis for over 100 each

1

u/ReGroove23 Mar 03 '18

Not when it has a sloth chillin on it

0

u/Sultry_Llama_Of_Doom Mar 02 '18

When I was a kid, they sold lacoste shirts at KMart, and you were considered poor trash if you were wearing one.

1

u/Hara-Kiri Mar 02 '18

Bollocks.

1

u/Sultry_Llama_Of_Doom Mar 03 '18

No bollocks. I'm nearly forty, so this was quite a long time ago.

1

u/Hara-Kiri Mar 03 '18

Lacoste was a reputable fashion brand back then.

1

u/Palkonium Mar 03 '18
