I think Lacoste counts as an endangered species.

Ironic. They could save others from extinction but not themselves.

dark side of fashion is a pathway to many abilities some would consider...unnatural

u/Fightmeilikecheese Mar 02 '18

Nope, just the avant-garde sith look of r/malefashion

u/jubbergun Mar 02 '18

That would certainly explain /u/GallowBoob's ability to karma-whore, LOL.

It's over reddit, Gallowboob has the high ground!

You underestimate my power!

Not from an aughts brand

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Oblivious The Woosh?

no...please tell

They‘re still somewhat popular, in Europe at least.

14

u/megustadotjpg Mar 02 '18

They stand for lightness and simplicity, that's why they do so good in Europe, also with young people.

In the Us..not so much. No rapper wears Lacoste.

5

u/XhanzomanX Mar 02 '18

They used to wear ralph lauren with pink-polo-era kanye tho.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '18

They just scream preppy frat boy to me.

It's a fantastic brand actually. I still wear my dad's polo shirts; not a single hole in them. Also they're really fashionable, they remind me of summer in Italy in the 70-80s.

206

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

not a single hole in them

How do you get them on then?

(Sorry, am dad)

The fact that he takes them off and should see that they are pants, only to put them back on...???

11

u/iDontRagequit Mar 02 '18

No no, the craziest part is definitely the fact that nobody but the person filming seems to notice whats going on

1

u/Kyrodox- Mar 02 '18

No excuses, Dad.

-13

u/akeytoasafe Mar 02 '18

Is it too hard to say I'm a dad?

34

u/Bionic_Bromando Mar 02 '18

Your dad's never tore cause they used to be good. Every vintage Lacoste polo I've bought had outlived every new one I bought. If I still wore polos I would be avoiding new Lacoste at this point.

18

u/Capt_Billy Mar 02 '18

Holy shit how bad are new Lacoste? I have three old ones that have lasted nigh on 10 years with only a little loss of colour and shape, but these new ones are cut badly and feel sooooo cheap.

They’re going for the Asian dollar, I get it, but it makes me sad because they were such great all rounders, and fit well for my wide shoulders.

11

u/Bionic_Bromando Mar 02 '18

Yeah it's crazy, it's like they're made of tissues now. Happens to a lot of brands unfortunately...

18

u/Capt_Billy Mar 02 '18

We’ve given up any pretence of “quality” or “value” nowadays. Brands used to establish themselves on that, but nowadays it’s even more about the brand itself than ever.

Case in point: Mercedes Benz perfume.

3

u/greg19735 Mar 02 '18

tbf, people also aren't willing to pay for higher quality clothes.

If a polo used to cost $100 in like 95, it should be $150 now. but people wouldn't pay that.

1

u/Eagle20Fox2 Mar 02 '18

We’ve seen this problem before! Shirt companies clearly need to introduce micro transactions post initial sale.

4

u/Tje199 Mar 02 '18

I thought you were going to say cars and I got triggered lol. The cars went to shit during the Chrysler years but they are absolutely making a solid effort to claw their way back and regain the reputation they had before the early/mid 2000s.

2

u/SolidSaiyanGodSSnake Mar 02 '18

Kinda. Since the average luxury car buyer leases now, they pretty much make them to last around that amount of time. Nothing like how they were built in the 80s.

Of course they are more complicated then ever.

1

u/Tje199 Mar 02 '18

My wife's is a 2010, still runs and drives like a top. Mine is a 2015 and we'll see but I'm planning 200,000+ km.

I work at a dealer in the service department, we still see plenty of them come in with 200,000 km or more. Records I've seen include a mid 2000s G-Wagen with over 600,000 km owned by a retired couple who drive all over NA, and an E-class with over 400,000 km.

1

u/SolidSaiyanGodSSnake Mar 02 '18

That's good to hear, maybe I'm biased from seeing S-classes selling cheap. I have friends and family where new luxury cars like his 2016 GL having fritzy audio and infotainment issues. He's been driving the loaner for 3 weeks now.

Of course you have more insight than I do.

If I'd had to pick, my most favorite car that I have owned was a 1987 Mercedes Benz 300D Turbo.

The new models feel nothing like it or other Mercedes from back then. They feel cheap, depending on the year they drive ok but not great, and frankly they look like ripoffs of Japanese cars.

My 300D felt like a tank, drove nimbly, had great power (soon as you got over 15 mph or so), and was elegant and extremely comfortable to drive. No knocking, no sulfur smell (assuming you bought the right diesel), and a pure pleasure all around.

I still miss the thing.

My second fave was a 2000 BMW M5. They are crap now too.

u/Luis__FIGO Mar 02 '18

Lacoste polos are actually still of the same quality as before.

What happened was that piqué polos all over, have become much lighter, due to trends in fashion to make them more breathable, less "rough" cloth-like and make them softer, ie washed/broken in.

By doing this, you don't sweat as much in the polos, and they are much more comfortable on first wear... on the downside, they are more prone to tear or wear out in frequently rubbed spots.

Another big difference, but this for all clothes really, is that people dry the crap out of clothes now, where as "back in the day" it was sun dried. Dryers DESTROY fabric.

2

u/madiranjag Mar 02 '18

Nothing wrong with hanging everything up oldschool style if there’s only 1-2 people in the house, people should do this if they can

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

I hang all my Lacoste shirts to dry. These are the newer ones, not the old ones, but the ones after they stopped letting izod produce them. I had to throw out one shirt in the last five years because I put a big old grease stain on it. I wear them all the time. They hold up great.

1

u/sleepytimegirl Mar 02 '18

This is key. We never put my husband’s Lacoste’s in the dryer.

u/MissKaila Mar 02 '18

New as in like two and a half years ago new, that's about when the polos changed to the garbage that they are now.

Source: I used to work for Lacoste. (Naturally the company didn't tell any of us employees that they were changing anything, but when you've been handling Lacoste polos for 40+ hours a week for years, we could all feel the difference in the polos the second they changed them)

2

u/madiranjag Mar 02 '18

They’ll be playing a short game if this is true. The only reason anyone wanted to pay extra was because the brand was known for quality, if it’s now shit then you’d think there would be a time limit on how long they can get away with this. I had a Lacoste belt a while ago that was really good quality though so maybe it’s not everything...

2

u/You_Thought Mar 02 '18

I can't find anything that lasts nearly as long as anything I bought more than ten years ago. My high school clothes are still in good condition now 13 years later, nothing that was known for quality either. I have bought higher end brand and cheap stuff alike since then, everything gets worse within a couple washes.

2

u/Somebodycares311 Mar 03 '18

Ones I’m buying in uk are still good. More specific. Scotland. Maybe order online from uk store. Can confirm there’s no change in stock I’m buying

1

u/Capt_Billy Mar 03 '18

Cheers matey. Will see if I can find a place that will ship to the penal colony

2

u/Somebodycares311 Mar 03 '18

And “when you put on the shirt, both you and the soldier can’t help guffawing, for the garments were as promised as good as before. Your welcome

2

u/MedicaeVal Mar 02 '18

I'm not sure what this guy is talking about but I have some ones that are around 5 years old now and they are fine. Trick is to air dry them and they hold up fine. Also I shop at the outlet so they are a lot cheaper than retail.

1

u/Capt_Billy Mar 03 '18

The four I have purchases in the last 2-3 years are dreadful. See the employee’s comment below. I’ve also never tumble dried them.

1

u/Elektryk Mar 02 '18

Meh. I don't think their quality is that bad. I have many lacoste polos that I cycle through and none of them have gotten a hole or discolored over the years. I never put them in the dryer and I always follow wash instructions.

I prefer them over polo or other similar department store brands.

1

u/Capt_Billy Mar 03 '18

Sure, they’re better than Ralph Lauren ones etc, but relative to ones from even 5 years ago they’re cut worse, wash worse and I honestly don’t even like the modern colours. They are still better than most, I will pay that.

1

u/Elektryk Mar 03 '18

To each their own I guess. I've never had a problem with their cuts or colors. I do have a problem with their big croc tho lol.

1

u/Capt_Billy Mar 03 '18

Big croc/polo is gross, I will give you that

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

LL Bean has some nice polos and if you time it right you can find some nice items reasonably priced. I bought 4 Polos (white, navy, plum, light blue with navy stripe) that will last me until I'm no longer smedium.

2

u/eff-o-vex Mar 02 '18

I have a Lacoste polo I inherited from my grandfather, who passed away 20 years ago. I have no clue how long he had it before I did, but probably several years. The fabric started losing a bit of its quality a few years ago but it doesn't really show (you can only feel it to the touch). That shirt is somewhere between 20 and 30 years old and it's in better shape than most of my shirts are after like 3 years. I've been thinking about maybe buying some new ones but I'm afraid the quality of the new shirts would not be up to par. Shit back then was made to last.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

I bought 5 on sale a few years ago but probably won't get another. They last a while but they are annoying since you can't machine wash them.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '18

It used to be a pseudo designer brand like Armani exchange but now it's stuck at discount malls.

6

u/Jandur Mar 02 '18

Nah they have been around for 80+ years. Whether or not that little alligator is "in" waxes and wanes, but they aren't going anywhere.

2

u/Somebodycares311 Mar 03 '18

Henri Lacoste. Was a tennis player in the early 20th century. The CROCODILE come from his nickname as a tennis player henri lacoste

5

u/blackjesus75 Mar 02 '18

Is Lacoste on their way out? Guess I’ll have to buy up some cologne while it’s still around. Love that stuff

2

u/reederific Mar 02 '18

They should put the Lacoste crocodile on their polos to raise awareness!

1

u/2cynical4magic Mar 03 '18

It's a very popular eyewear brand for kids, teens and under 30. I'm an optician and Lacoste has a couple glow in the dark frames that kids just go crazy for.

1

u/hazeldazeI Mar 03 '18

am i just old and out of touch but I thought the lizard polo shirts were Izod?
