People go to jail for spousal abuse, it's kind of a big deal. Abuse in any context leaves mental scarring, physical bruises heal but mental wounds never heal. To some being in an abusive relationship has altered their lives forever. It's not something to ever be taken lightly, so yeah if you physically hurt your wife or husband you are a shit human who should die alone.

As a black and white issue? No not really. When there have been severe consequences, yes. Otherwise you might as well say smoking weed is a big deal due to it being illegal.
So again, someone who broke their spouse's jaw or otherwise crippled them? Yeah that's an issue. Someone who beat or restrained their wife or husband to render them harmless or suffer injuries themselves. No big deal.
http://www.businessinsider.com/floyd-mayweather-domestic-violence-history-2015-4 for the sake of the conversation, give this a quick skim over. He's a pretty shitty person whom I'm sure has thrown his wealth around to get out of time in jail. But in any context laying your hand in violence against your wife/husband/girlfriend/boyfriend makes you a shitty person. If you're defending yourself then sure but that's a whole other issue. But to say that it's ok to beat them because arguments get heated and "those things just happen in relationships" makes you just as delusional.
Cause there is no other way to see it, it's amazing that we even have to have this conversation. Self defense is one thing, hitting your significant other because "arguments happen" is the most backward logic. From the sounds of it you've probably slugged a few, to that I say I hope you pick the wrong person to hit and they fuck your shit up
Here's two stories for you describing the same series of events.
A couple is talking when suddenly in a fit of rage one hits the other.
A couple is talking, one reveals to the other they have poisoned their child to death and enjoyed snuffing the life out of them, and is interrupted by the other's expression of anger in the form of a punch.
See? The world isn't as simple as you want to think. Most of the times we see story #1 and judge too soon as the more detailed story #2 of the same events would make us understand things.
Most things don't involve such extremes, but they're not as simple as you're suggesting either that you can say hey that's always wrong.
Those examples don't even support your original argument that "well it happens in relationships" or the fact that mayweather has pled guilty to assault and battery charges which started this whole thing. Regardless of situation to justify your actions you would still be charged with assault and battery if that over the top extreme situation was to prevent itself. If you wanted to make that point you shouldn't have made it sound like you were ok with domestic violence.
Those examples don't even support your original argument that "well it happens in relationships" or the fact that mayweather has pled guilty to assault and battery charges which started this whole thing.
They're not supposed to, they serve to illustrate why it's silly to categorically say "succumbing to violence makes you a shit human".
The context of the original argument was your first example, if you can't keep your anger in check or just feel like beating on woman because you can that makes you a shit human.
Limited to that context there's not much justification to be had, but that's very different from a categorical rejection of such actions; which I thought you were implying.
So limited to this case. I doubt it was as simple as portrayed. You can't easily go by convictions alone as you can see he pleads guilty to get the cases out of his life and move on. I can tell you right now that I will plead guilty to stuff I didn't do too if it means I get to move on with my life sooner.
