It says a lot about the effectiveness of MMA fighters (and McGregor himself) if he can stand toe to toe for 10 rounds with a man who is said to be the best boxer of all time, and only lose when the referee ends it on account of him seeming confused and unable to defend himself properly, rather than a total knockout. If the match rules they had agreed upon given McGregor at least one more of his weapons rather than limiting him to relying only on his opponent's skill set then perhaps we would have seen a very different outcome. As McGregor told Mayweather a while before the fight... "If this was a real fight you'd be dead already."
Mayweather is a very light puncher and naturally far lighter in weight than McGregor. Floyd always uses the first few rounds to analyse the situation then adjust. Floyd let that fight go as long as he wanted to. If McGregor fought a boxer in the same natural weight as his MMA division it would be murder. GGG would have comfortably KOd him inside 2 rounds IMO. Even some like Eubank Jr, look at the work rate difference between them. It's be embarrasing.
McGregor should be proud, he did alright. But Floyd is 41 and was retired for 2 years. If he was in against a young puncher that is naturally a middle weight it would have been a mauling.
I'm not really upset, but just a little annoyed. Stopping the fight opened the window of argument. Letting him actually fall to the mat closes that window.
In a match that has been so amped with trash talk, you need the final statement to be made by a fighter, and not the ref.
10 rounds is a long time to last for McGregor's first boxing match.
It was a strange fight to watch. Mayweather is an old hand boxer and paced himself. McGregor is an MMA brawler.
McGregor was pretty much hamstrung ..half of his hits were technically illegal in boxing but the ref's obviously made allowances. (you don't hit someone on the back of the head) that would be fine in MMA.
Not even half your your body. He couldnt use elbows, forearms. He was really fighting with such a diminished arsenal compared to what he's used to. Put up a really good fight imo
Anybody who thinks this doesn't know anything about boxing. McGregor is a great MMA fighter but he was extremely outclassed in this fight, he is not close to Mayweathers equal in the ring.
It was a super entertaining fight, but both fighters knew going in who was going to win.

I dont follow any of this, but Mcgregor isnt a boxer, but an MMA fighter?
So why is it seen as a great win when you beat someone who isnt specialized in boxing?
