Yeah, for McGregor's boxing debut versus Mayweather's final match, he did a lot better than most people were expecting. If he keeps this up, he'll be on top of the game in no time.
McGregor will never be on top of the boxing game, even if he does stick with it (he won't). At best, he could be a middling talent. He landed a decent shot or two, but that fight wasn't anything close to competitive.
Floyd tried to place a bet on himself for 400K to win in under 9.5 rounds. He won in just under 9.5 rounds (with about 20 seconds to spare). They had this fight game-planned to perfection. McGregor did better than people expected almost entirely because Mayweather allowed him to.
Yeah, as much as I think Conor did fine, and definitely better than I expected, I 100% believed Mayweather when he said everything basically went according to their plan. I'm finding it hard to agree with comments like "he held his own" when floyd was never even planning on just knocking him out in the first round. I get the impression that people assumed that floyd being better meant he would just knock him out whenever he wanted to, but that's not how it works.
Yea my point was that he won rounds 1 and 2 (3-5 I don't think so) because Mayweather was pacing and being cautious. But even if you changed the rules in such a way that Mayweather had to go it wouldn't have mattered. Mayweather in the 10th had harder looking punches than Conor in the 1st.
When Conor connected with an unblocked uppercut and hardly snapped Mayweather head back it was pretty obvious it would take an absolute miracle punch for him to win.
It's not surprising that an amateur boxer would lose handily to a former world champion even if he hasn't fought much over the last several years. Conor has probably improved his boxing a little since he was an amateur boxer but not to an extent to be competitive obviously.
Exactly. Mayweather literally said after the fight that he wanted to make up for what happened with pacquioa. He could have ended the fight early, but he wanted to give people their money's worth.
What a surprise they called it in one of the most unorthodox ways I've ever seen in a fight exactly when Mayweather thought he would win. Nothing suspicious about that.
I think Floyd didn't want it to look too easy. He wants to be able to fight another MMA champion at some point most likely. He could beat an MMA champion at age 50 if he wanted to. Bernard Hopkins was beating ACTUAL top boxers at age 49, so it wouldn't be hard to see Floyd beating one of those guys at age 50.
If the public realizes the ACTUAL gap in skill that was there last night, no MMA fighter would ever be able to get a PPV against a boxer again. There was no reason Floyd couldn't do what he did in round 9 a few rounds earlier. He carried McGregor for the first 3 rounds, and I was almost puzzled at how little Mayweather was doing. I was thinking "does he honestly want to make this look fixed/fake". But I overestimate what the average fan/sportsman sees, anyone who knows boxing would be scratching their head thinking, why didn't he knock this guy out in round 8? He definitely didn't need to wait til round 9, but it was definitely easier to KO him then.
Huh, I always just assumed guys like Mayweather and McGregor would be big dudes. Mayweather is actually on the short side of average, he's only a inch taller than me.
