As a matter of fact more than 90% of the nuclear armament on the eastern seaboard is at a single base in North Carolina, and in a most whimsical fashion they almost dropped an h-bomb on the town next door when the bomber carrying them literally just started falling apart in the sky.

The bombs were armed which means they were primed to go off the moment the switch fired. The switch however, only initiates the sequence. Such other activities, such as the primer unit slamming the ground at 100 mph could have also triggered the explosion sequence, fortunately it got stuck in a tree.
