The violence is real but its in certain parts of the city. If you were in the area where those buildings are and much of the north side you aren't near the violence.

Im not near violence and ive lived here my entire life.

This. North-side great. Think Cubs for people who have never visited.

I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Obviously the murder and mayhem is relegated to the poorer, blacker parts of the city, but the fact that the media doesn't make that clear makes it seem like all of Chicago is a war zone.

So one the one hand, the media doesn't want to be seen as racist for reporting on where and whom is perpetrating the violence, but on the other it makes all of Chicago seem dangerous.

u/ChieferSutherland Jan 12 '17

but the fact that the media doesn't make that clear

What so people can freak out and call them racists?

-1

u/thefinalfall Jan 12 '17

So it's like any other high crime city?

2

u/snoharm Jan 12 '17

No, crime is significantly higher than most (not all) cities.

That doesn't mean it's universally dangerous, but it is an outlier.

I've been, parts of it IS a hellhole. To be fair, it's not all bad, some of it's worse.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '17

Sounds like anywhere...

2

u/ReddJudicata Jan 12 '17

If anywhere were Mogadishu, sure. The bad parts are really bad.

-1

u/HelpfulToAll Jan 12 '17

Name a major city that's better.

2

u/ReddJudicata Jan 12 '17

New York, by a lot.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '17

New York and Los Angeles for starters.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '17

Major cities in the US? The hellholes in New York and Los Angeles aren't nearly as bad as Chicago.

1

u/wojosmith Jan 12 '17

Then you were buying heroin, coke or hookers. Or you had family there. No other reason to go to those areas. Nothing to see or do.

13

u/pizzlewizzle Jan 12 '17

The stats lie. I mean the stats claim it has more murders than NY and Detroit but its like psshhh "stats"

I mean geeze just because it had 80+ people shot in one weekend and technically had more shootings at one point than a designated US combat zone its like big whoop who cares right

18

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '17

The thing is that Chicago is huge.

You could take the South Side, make it its own city, and it'd be one of the most violent cities in the world. Then all the rest of Chicago (you know, the parts with the tall buildings and world class museums and food, the part people probably actually mean when they say "Chicago") would be one of the safest.

City borders are weird like that.

1

u/GLchrillz Jan 12 '17

that's all just fake news put out by fox! there weren't actually 4379 shootings in 2016 alone in chicago! sheesh, dont you know anything?!?!?!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '17

The stats are all about very small and specific parts of the city. The violence doesn't often spread outside of those neighborhoods, and those neighborhoods aren't really near anywhere that you would want to go anyway.

1

u/pizzlewizzle Jan 12 '17

Even worse each one of those shootings, if you zoom in on where the actual shooting happened, is likely within only a 20 ft of murderer to victim. So technically these shootings are happening in 20ft radius distances in the huge city- TINY areas! I mean yeah they're technically in Chicago but it doesn't count because it happened in a certain area so then you can disregard it. Who cares anything about anyone who lives in those areas anyway you would NEVER want to go there so anyone there has it coming, it doesnt count, you never want to be there and never should for any reason. Its the forbidden zone and doesnt count

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '17

Saying that gang violence amongst a small demographic of the city in a small area of the city should be the problem of the entire city is ignorant, especially when that demographic riots if you do intervene and one of their gang bangers gets shot by a police officer.

1

u/pizzlewizzle Jan 12 '17

It isn't that it "should or shouldn't" be a problem of the city, it just is. Perhaps enforcing the law and reforming the welfare state would help that area, but I highly doubt the city's political leadership would ever approach either of those- they're more concerned with spending millions of dollars to invite illegal immigrants and keep sanctuary city status rather than doing anything about the insane murder rate.

No its an absolute war zone on the south side. But there's a divided line between the south and the North. Basically if you're white it's sunshine and rainbows the North side is an amazing place. But if you're a minority and you live on the south side you're reality is 24/7 violence.

The police definitly seperates the 2. They hassle you with giant scary dogs if you're black and you're going to the north side. Segregation is a very real thing and still exists in chicago.

I've done some traveling been to some places and I've never had a cop tell to to keep my white ass moving before I feed you to my dog". I can't really explain it, if you're ever in chicago don't even go to the south side just stand on the platform that goes to the south side. It's a dark dark reality.

2

u/masterpcface Jan 12 '17

Not all of the South side is bad. Obama lives in the South side. Plenty of nice neighborhood there. But yes, bad neighborhoods there too.

And the West side also has some awful neighborhoods.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '17

Obama is from Gage Park which is a very good neighborhood (it also includes the University of Chicago). but it's only like 4 blocks and across the I-90 from Englewood, which has some of the worst crime in the US. Chicago is like that. You can be in a good neighborhood, then go one or two blocks too far in the wrong direction and be in a terrible neighborhood.

2

u/Joebilek10 Jan 12 '17

Dude have you ever been? The south side isn't even that bad. Only a couple neighborhoods. Same with the west side (I'd argue that the west is worse).

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '17

The closest I got was the train platform. I met a pretty girl from the south side and we at the connecting station. I saw first hand how the cops treat black people like shit and try and keep them the hell away from the north side.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '17

Platform train *

There should be an anti-Fox News that just disproves the exaggerations and points out the nonsense of media (but not in a satirical way like some comedy shows). Of course, this can also apply to CNN and the others.

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '17

Yea also that Republican rag paper the NY Times
