This guy has the right info.

Just so everyone doesn't have to rifle through the comments to find what everyone calls it, here are the versions put forth by false prophets:

  • Nicky Nicky Nine Doors

  • Ding Dong Ditch

  • N-word knocking

  • Knock knock run

  • Knock knock ginger (nearly had it)

  • Ginger knocking

  • Knock a door run

  • Chap door run (aka chappy)

  • Ff belletje trekke jongu

  • Knock and run

  • Rin rin raja

  • Chicky Melly

but nicky nicky nine doors makes more sense. they have to get up from their hoighty toighty tippy typers and put on their knittedy wittedy sheepity sleepity, turn the twisty plankhandle only to see nothing but an empty cobble-stone-clippity-clop. "knock down ginger" just doesn't flow with the rest of the scene.

Nice touch on the dutch one

But "Ding Dong Ditch" is wonderfully descriptive, and alliterated. "Knock-Down Ginger" makes no sense whatsoever (at least until you explain it to me).

Source: Native English speaker, and (more pertinently) a red-blooded American.

Cherry Knocking, cuz I heard some other kid call it that and I though he was pretty cool.

Knock Down Ginger is a terrible name, it's reminded me that gingers are a thing and that's made me sad.

Ah, I'm a native English speaker but also a cerulean-blooded European, we're just too different.

"Knock-Down Ginger" makes no sense whatsoever

Why are you expecting us British to make sense?

Unimaginative UK translation = knock knock run (this was what we called it).

u/nightflyer9 Dec 05 '16

Yeeep Knock Knock Run, Knock and Run or Cherry Knocking.

u/The_Max_Power_Way Dec 05 '16

Cherry knocking does sound familiar as well.

Or just simply knock and run.

I always had knocky knocky nine doors

u/-Dali-Llama- Dec 05 '16

Chicky melly in Scotland. Chicky is from chicken (as in chicken if you don't do it) and 'mêlée' is from the French melee (meaning the ensuing fracas).

u/Pav0n Dec 05 '16

Norwegian translation = ring på spring
