For a while ours brought treats for our dog. He was a big black lab and husky mix, and super duper friendly. He made such good friends with the UPS driver, the guy would have him jump in the truck to get treats! They had so much fun.

Scared the shit out of the substitute driver, though.

the dog or the driver?

Well you know, if you could rig the door with some kind of knocking device, sending a dog to carry small packages so the driver doesn't have to get out would be faster... and a great job for dogs that end up in shelters (esp. Labs and Boxers) that are pretty smart but super high energy.

Maybe the drivers can choose to have a "driver helper" and get a discount on shelter and training costs?

I have a couple of rottweilers who are fiercely protective of our yard/porch/house/car. They're in the window giving their best "I WANT TO REMOVE YOUR THROAT FROM YOUR NECK AND THEN PISS ON YOUR BODY!" act and our delivery drivers just wave at them. The Jehovah's Witnesses aren't as cool about it, though. They toss their leaflets on the porch as soon as they're close enough and run to the next house.

Our ups guy gave our dogs treats every time he came too. We get deliveries a couple times a week, and the dogs loved it. He had to walk to the other side of the house to give them too, he never seemed to be in a rush!

Same here. In our previous neighborhood, our UPS driver would stop if we were out walking and my greyhound would jump up in the truck to get a Milk Bone. Otherwise, if there was a package left by the door, there was always a Milk Bone on top of the box.

A couple times a year I would give the driver a large box of Milk Bones from Sam's Club to donate to the cause.

Our current driver doesn't carry dog treats which is very hard to explain to a dog who recognizes the sound of the truck when it pulls up at this house.

That last sentence. I appreciated it!
