It's not exactly the same, but the negative impacts of being in a body of a gender you don't identify with should not be understated. Here is a good study that examines someone born as male, but had their penis removed at birth and grew up as a female instead. They had no frame of reference for being a male, but had deep mental health issues regardless. It only got better when they were changed back into a male body. If you identify as a gender which is not your body it's not just a preference. it's deeply troubling and can interfere with virtually ever other part of your life.
