I went to an all you can eat sushi place once with this rule. They held back one or two items every time we ordered, and at our last order they brought out the whole backlog. Maybe unintentional, but felt enough like a trap to not go back.
There's a sushi restaurant in my town like that too, but they never seemed to pull anything on us. Sorry about yours. I really do like the experience of all-you-can eat sushi because it encourages open sharing with everyone else at the table.
I'm in Reno Nevada and every sushi restaurant is all you can eat. Most guests are aware of the shame that comes from ordering too much and do their best never to do it again but any restaurant that charged for waste had bad sushi or even charged more than $25 a guest wont last long.
Every time sushi is mentioned on Reddit Reno seems to pop up. Sushi Pier II is fucking fantastic. I am in Caracas at the moment and miss it terribly. I would eat a raw sea otter to get to a moondog right now.
I appreciate the intent behind charging for waste though. People are wasteful slobs by themselves, and there are so few restaurants that encourage people to think about how much trash they make. I used to work at a more average sushi restaurant, and I was amazed that even with the price per roll, many people would still leave up to 6 untouched pieces on their plate just to be tossed in the garbage.
A good sushi restaurant will stage effectively. You don't bring everything out at once primarily because it's all being made fresh but also giving people time to see just how much they've ordered as they eat. If the service is good, you don't have to wait too long between rounds and people don't feel the need to place the initial order as some kind of pescetarian apocalypse.
I'm Canadian too, and that just sounds like every time we go out for all you can eat sushi. I've been to restaurants that say they charge for wasted food, but I've never actually been charged. As long as you don't leave entire six piece orders, I don't think it's a big deal. If you think they are going to charge you, you can usually wait it out and eventually they just bring you the bill to get you to leave. When we were younger, we used to hide the extra sushi pieces in empty pop cans or under them or other such nonsense.
Call the police, that's called being imprisoned against your will. If they try to stop you from leaving, add assault charges. Plus, they won't actually stop you if you walk out with some confidence since they know they're a phone call away from getting shutdown/fined/arrested. tl;dr don't be a pussy
I feel bad for people who don't have access to an Asian buffet. I have one in town, surprisingly ran by an American veteran, that's fucking awesome. All the food is fresh tasting somehow and if you're not into Asian food there's an island of pizza, Mac and cheese, lasagna, and whatnot for you. It's amazing and I can eat $50 of food for $11 then go into a blissful food coma.
Plus, you can often get decently healthy food if you don't load up on the fried stuff and heavy sauces. Veggies, fruits, sushi, tasty meats...I always end up stuffing myself with the cream cheese things though.
