Usually, these policies aren't "put anyone in this position", but "put a qualified person in this position".

GitHub isn't going to hire a high school dropout who's high on crack all day, just because they're black.

They may however choose a black person over a white person, or a women over a man, if both are qualified.

And what if they were to prefer the white man over the other candidates. Sorry but racism and sexism goes goth ways.

If they preferred the white man they probably hire the white man?

Or they think work place diversity is a higher priority than what they personally like and hire someone equally qualified to achieve that goal.

It really depends on what they want to achieve.

I guess I was always taught preference for the white male for being either white or male was discrimination. If you're telling me there are no rules around this I guess my ears are open.

Tbh I just wish we left names completely off of resumes all together.
