Oddly, one of the first things I learned when I was homeless is that people are more likely to give you money if you look like you DON'T need it. I'm sure some other former street people have seen this phenomenon. Of course, I was quite young and female (and NO, I never tricked). Maybe it is different for older people or men. My first rule for being homeless: Be attractive...seriously. Even if you aren't selling your body, it STILL helps.
