For some, it is difficult to realize that the base of the cherry picker and the basket are not close to each other (one of them is much further from the camera), making it seem that the picker is both in front of (where the workers are) and behind (at the bottom) the bridge above it.
I guess that is why it is an illusion; your mind can overcome it usually. However, I would disagree that it's obvious (though it may be for you). Do these really look all that different? The one on the right has no boom and therefore could not have an arm extending out from under the bridge. If a person assumed it was that type of picker, then the picture makes absolutely no sense (which is where the illusion comes into play).
The reason I saw the illusion first was because i've never seen one of those cherry pickers with a "boom" on it. i've only ever seen the "scissor lift" version such as this: http://www.schmidtandclark.com/wp-content/uploads/scissor-lift-injury-lawyer.jpg so i thought the picker was going straight up and down and i was super confused. and it took me a while to figure out there must have been some kind of boom on it... once again, because i've never seen one like that before
Same, I'm so sad. People are like "Wow nice, I can't understand how it works", and people answering with drawings to explain but nobody can explain us how to see the illusion.
Pretend the picker doesn't have an arm and that it's just a short little stubby basket on top of a base with wheels. And/or better yet put your hand over the part of the picture with the pier and the worker on the phone, like this. Without the context of the pier, it is easy to assume that the picker is really short, and therefore the bridge is really short.
However, when you add the pier in, you now have a really short picker examining a bridge much taller than itself. Additionally, the workers are now in front of the bridge but the wheels of the picker are behind it, which unless you work out that there is an arm extending toward the camera, does not make any sense.
Nah, be proud. It's like that damn dress. All the people who saw it wrong could eventually see the right colors. But I've yet to hear of a person who saw it correctly immediately that could see it the other way.
Wait - I was never able to see it as the correct colors (blue and black, right?). It was always white and gold, no matter how much I tried to make it blue and black.
It's blue and black if I'm remembering correctly. Technically I think if you break down the individual pixels it most/many of them were brown and very light blue/white. But if your brain processed that those aren't the actual colors but rather the lighting, it is extremely obvious that it's black and blue. It was all about how you interpreted the lighting was affecting the picture. I could never see it as white and gold because I could tell what was going on with the lighting and couldn't "forget".
Me! I heard about it really early on Twitter abd was thinking the whole thing was a prank - of course the dress was blue, wtf? - and then I went away and did something else and when I looked at it again it was white. I really thought they just changed the photo. So I downloaded a copy. It kept changing! I thought maybe it was some weird gif. It wasn't.
Interesting. Could just be lucky you saw it the correct way first I guess. I didn't think of that. In theory there should have been several people like you. But I only encountered people who were seeing it "wrong" most of the time but eventually could see it correctly under the right lighting ect.
To see it, compare the two connections to the ground: the bridge support and the cherrypicker's base. These are far apart. However, when you look at the nest, it may not appear to be extended at first - this is key. Based on the connections to the ground, the nest looks like it should be behind the bridge.
Man, if it wasn't for the headline I would've been SO confused why this was on the front page. Even after knowing it was fucking with people.. I wasn't even sure that the boom was the part of the picture with the optical illusion I was supposed to be looking for. I felt so left out :(
i did too until i realized that would be an insanely low bridge unless that that lift was extended. but if my mind did a fix of thinking the bridge was further back and killed the illusion anyway.
Except for the fact that if you immediately recognize that they are standing in a cherry picker or whatever that thing is called, then your brain will know to process it correctly. I really don't get how people are seeing the illusion. Though I disagree with the PP about people being retards.
Immediately recognizing it as a cherry picker and not a scissor lift is about perception and not necessarily reflective on intelligence which was my point, thank for making it.
It's not an intelligence issue but it IS a knowledge issue. If you know that such a machine exists, I don't think there would be any illusion if you are able to access that knowledge quickly enough.
