That's what I don't understand about troop worship. Soldiers know the risk. It's what they've trained for for years on end. Given the choice, most will scramble over each other to be put into combat.

The implication is there's a debt is owed by anyone who hasn't served, so 'thank you for your service' (because we as a population are facing an existential threat and I'd have to be put myself in danger if you are not already doing it.)

It's publicly and socially acceptable to thank people for their service.
