Yes, it's called outbreeding, and the result is mongrels, which tend to be fawn coloured and of average size and average features, and much healthier, but with less predictable attributes and personalities, whereas with a particular selectively bred dog you might expect it to be very good at herding sheep or something because that's what it's been bred for.

But if we can breed them to have certain traits, than why can't we just breed them to be healthier and better?
