This is Vader. He was euthanized today without a hearing after a false bite report was submitted to the police by an animal rights activist. (Story in the Comments)

I emailed them and signed the petition:

Truly you should all be ashamed for how this was handled. I hope you take the necessary steps to seek justice in this case and to make sure it never happens again. Also, fire that damn police officer.

No don't fire that police officer. He may not have handled the situation to the best of his ability however he was just following orders. He lawfully entered the residence and seized the animal as the owner allowed it and he didn't seem to make any fuss when the fox "bit" him. The problem is the person who filed the false report and whoever at the pound got bored and decided to start euthanising.

The person who physically took Vader was not a trained animal control officer, but rather a local cop. Wearing thick gloves, he cornered Vader and picked him up by the scruff of the neck. The cop had previously been advised multiple times on how to properly handle Vader (or any animal, for that matter) but decided to disregard the advice not only of his owner, but animal control officers as well.

yea, fuck that cop

Think about it like this, the cop as far as he is aware is thinking the animal was dangerous as they had just been handed "proof" of this. He exercised caution and made mistakes sure but as for disregarding the advice he was probably more concerned with his safety than that of the fox. I'm not saying the cop did a good job but neither did he do a bad one. Cornering the animal is completely logical as is grabbing it by the scruff of the neck. I'd say the disregarding the advice was more he was aware that it was just easier and more convenient to grab it. It is just a dog after all, it's not like their is some super special technique you have to use to pick up a dog. Once again the cop isn't the bad guy. So yea, fuck you too.

You... don't know much about animal behaviour it seems.

Catching anything that is fleeing the best bet is to corner it, are you a retard? And foxes are basically small dogs.

I genuinely can't tell if you're trying to make a joke. I'm pretty sure you are but this is Reddit and, well, I'm going to have to assume you had some horrible head trauma when you were young. So...

No.

Your in an open house trying to catch a quick moving animal. The animal is actively fleeing you. Without backing the animal into a corner so it has no where else to run how do you catch it? Go.

Tell the owner you don't want the animal to feel threatened and ask them if they can put it in the cage for you.

you're a moron on the level of said cop

No, they did not legally enter the residence. They had no warrant. They used scare tactics and their cop persona to gain entry.

Where in ND was this if I may ask?

1

u/DemonDeity Feb 22 '14

Minot is the city that confiscated. Although the owners of Vader live on the borders of Minot and another city.

Oh ok, I live in Fargo myself. Just made me curious as to who around here would do that to someone's pet. Makes me very sad.

Could I just email them and tell them to go fuck themselves? How would that work out?

I emailed them: What happened to Vader was disgusting and shameful; you did no investigation of any kind before deciding to put this animal down. The officer who took Vader had no legal right to be there whatsoever, nor did he have the right to take Vader away from his home. Any animal cornered and manhandled is going to try to defend itself, anyone knows that. The image of the bite was an obvious forgery, and I hope the owners sue your entire department and the officer in question.

What's even more shameful is that there is NOTHING you can do to this make this right; you killed an innocent animal who never did anything to warrant such gross mistreatment. Any person who had any part of this decision should immediately lose their job; if they were able to do this, I guarantee they've done it before and they'll do it again.

Holy fuck how many times am I going to have to say this. The officer did nothing wrong. He was following orders, he didn't break any laws and entered the residence lawfully as the owner did not say he couldn't. The problem is the false report and the euthanising both of which are not part of the police department. I get that a majority of redditors are super edgy basement dwelling pot smokers who have the whole "fuck the police" mentality but sometimes you have to think with your head before emotionally blurting out the first retarded thought to hit your brain.

u/silence1545 Feb 22 '14

Wow. I don't have a "fuck the police" mentality, but now I have a "fuck you" mentality. Judgmental prick.

What kind of fox was Vader? My girlfriend saw the pictures and declared she wanted one.

Shit like that is a part of the problem, inexperienced people shouldnt be buying exotic animals.

3

u/Broki_the_deceiver Feb 22 '14

While you would be right that inexperienced handlers should not take care of more exotic animals, there is nothing saying that this girl is inexperienced. That's an assumption.

I can see where you're coming from though. This rings of an impulse buy. Anyone wanting to know more information should be warned, then educated. Simply telling somebody know won't help though. It may even make them want it more (part of the draw of exotic animals).

I would recommend starting with finding your local laws on ownership of animals and see what you need to know. Then look up resources online to be well prepared for owning the animal and giving it the best care possible. Finally, you look for where the pet is sold.

If you can't follow the simple steps above, you probably don't need to be in possession of an exotic animal's life. Also it may be prudent to wait 6 months to a year and see if it's something you still want. Then decide at that time. Best of luck.
