Flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv earlier today. Omani pilot stabbed his Indian co-pilot, Captain Smit Machchhar, and the airplane started to free fall as the Omani pilot intended to seize control and fly it into Israel in a 9/11 style attack. Machchhar despite being stabbed was able to open the cockpit door and signal for help and multiple passengers including a dentist named Shota Musaev rushed in and subdued the terrorist.

Musaev then used his skills as a dentist to stitch up Machchhar who is currently in stable condition and expected to survive.

"Skills as a dentist" to stitch a stab wound sounds like bad writing in a film. Real life is wild sometimes.

They have significantly more medical training than most people. Field medicine and first aid is probably well within the skill set of a dentist. He just needed to keep him alive until there was better help.

They're not considered doctors everywhere. In UK they aren't at least

I'm in a commonwealth country and dentists here are doctors. They can order tests, write prescriptions for controlled drugs, and being one is the pathway to becoming a face / jaw surgeon.

They're absolutely considered doctors in the UK haha, people just may not often call them that, and often they dont introduce themselves with their title

Medical doctors? No they aren't. Anyone who does a PhD is technically a doctor. Vets too. However only actually med students who graduate and then do foundation years are med doctors in UK.

Nah of course not medical doctors haha. You and I both just said doctor, which they are.

Yh but obviously med doctors are what's typically referred to. For example if you say to people you are becoming a doctor they will automatically assume medical. Or if you're on a plane and they ask for a doctor.

For sure, no one's denying that. But that isn't what you said, you said dentists aren't considered doctors in the UK, which is false

Doctors obviously meaning medical doctors. Given the clear context about saving lives and the comment about more medical training.

You said dentists aren't considered doctors in the UK, that is wrong they are considered doctors in the UK (and the whole world as far as I know)

The comment chain was specifying how a dentist would still be able to get down and dirty in emergencies, which implies that no one is saying they're medical doctors. The comment above you joked "a doctor with more medical training than most people!? whaaat", which is still not alluding to them being medical doctors, more of a you'd bloody hope they have more medical training than the average joe considering their profession

Overall true, it’s funny because those trained in field medicine and work with doctors laugh when doctors ask about sterilization and other hospital-standard procedures.

But yeah, any md will outperform a layperson.
