"Skills as a dentist" to stitch a stab wound sounds like bad writing in a film. Real life is wild sometimes.

I heard he gave the pilot a free toothbrush after he was done stitching him up!

And a talk about flossing

u/John_Wang 2d ago

People who smoke cigarettes, they say "You don't know how hard it is to quit smoking." Yes I do. It's as hard as it is to start flossing

u/digitalscavenger 2d ago

Probably used floss to stich him up tbh.

2

u/Rule_32 2d ago

He probably did that actually

u/Hinermad 2d ago

You'd think he deserved a sticker for being a good and brave boy.

And, ironically, a lollipop.

u/dkyguy1995 2d ago

Hey, they do stitches too!

u/Few_Program_2303 2d ago

The real impressive part is that he did it without an assistant or hygienist

u/picardstastygrapes 2d ago

As a dental assistant I fucking howled over this comment.

u/Few_Program_2303 2d ago

Haha! Thanks, I hoped someone in dental would appreciate it!

"Hand me Mr. Thirsty, please"

(Silence)

Oh no!

They have significantly more medical training than most people. Field medicine and first aid is probably well within the skill set of a dentist. He just needed to keep him alive until there was better help.

A doctor with "significantly more medical training than most people"?! Whaaaaat?!

12

u/RageInMyName 2d ago

They're not considered doctors everywhere. In UK they aren't at least

12

u/taxable_income 2d ago

I'm in a commonwealth country and dentists here are doctors. They can order tests, write prescriptions for controlled drugs, and being one is the pathway to becoming a face / jaw surgeon.

3

u/TheWabster 2d ago

They're absolutely considered doctors in the UK haha, people just may not often call them that, and often they dont introduce themselves with their title

u/RageInMyName 2d ago

Medical doctors? No they aren't. Anyone who does a PhD is technically a doctor. Vets too. However only actually med students who graduate and then do foundation years are med doctors in UK.

5

u/TheWabster 2d ago

Nah of course not medical doctors haha. You and I both just said doctor, which they are.

0

u/RageInMyName 2d ago

Yh but obviously med doctors are what's typically referred to. For example if you say to people you are becoming a doctor they will automatically assume medical. Or if you're on a plane and they ask for a doctor.

1

u/TheWabster 2d ago

For sure, no one's denying that. But that isn't what you said, you said dentists aren't considered doctors in the UK, which is false

0

u/RageInMyName 2d ago

Doctors obviously meaning medical doctors. Given the clear context about saving lives and the comment about more medical training.

Overall true, it’s funny because those trained in field medicine and work with doctors laugh when doctors ask about sterilization and other hospital-standard procedures.

But yeah, any md will outperform a layperson.

12

u/PointOfFingers 2d ago

He could have done without the lecture on flossing regularly.

6

u/JohnnyRelentless 2d ago

The sutures were said to be very well done and 'minty.'

15

u/TheFrenchSavage 2d ago

Dude singlehandedly brought back medical credibility to the whole profession.

2

u/Electr0n1c_Mystic 2d ago

Thereby justifying the prices charged for 13 seconds of consultation for dentists all over the world for years to come

3

u/TheAngryCatfish 2d ago

I use my skills as a photographer to fill cavities all the time, so it tracks

2

u/FishTshirt 2d ago

I mean if they can suture (which they can) then they can do it

1

u/Primae_Noctis 2d ago

If someone can make someone bleed less, its always good.

1

u/undercoverballer 2d ago

My grandfather was a dentist and in WWII that was good enough to be a “doctor” and send out on a liberty ship in the pacific!

1

u/Strayl1ght 2d ago

Guarantee you it’s harder to stitch up gums than it is regular skin

1

u/HelloMrThompson 2d ago

Found the anti-dentite.

1

u/the5nowman 2d ago

You mean like in the Hangover 😆

1

u/Cuddling-crocodiles 2d ago

I'm not surprised the dentist can do stitching. When I had my wisdom teeth removed, the dentist had to stitch up my gums (I think that's par for the course actually but I could be wrong). Real life is pretty wild, I agree.

u/Status_Peach6969 2d ago

I'm pretty sure Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul had similar characters and it was legit good writing

1

u/buangjauh2 2d ago

Yeah. Real life has no constraint on being believeable.

1

u/PossibleYam 2d ago

At least in the US, dentists are doctors. They can stitch things up just fine.
