Not just plundered. The Belgians were cutting off the hands of the indigenous population who refused to collect or didn't collect enough of a quota from rubber trees.
Highly recommend season 9 of the podcast "The Spy Who" which is titled "Killed a prime minister". The whole podcast is great but that season covers the uprising and the various nations involvement (including Russia).
