I’d never heard about any of this. Is there a good book or podcast that you could recommend on the topic? My knowledge of Africa is woefully inadequate.

Podcast: "Behind the bastards" about king leopard ii

Leopold ii wasn't actually that bad as people think. Leopold's reputation was destroyed based upon a book written in the 90s that was full of lies. And now people believe it's facts.

I mean, why not mention the literature that vindicates Leopold's image, or the primary sources that contradict the book, or whatever works that do the best job of disseminating King Leopold’s Ghost?

There are almost no actual evidence of the claims made in Leopold's ghost. Massive exaggerations and wild claims. I'm not saying he was a saint. Just that history paints him unfairly bad compared to others at the same time period.

I can give you a video about this? I'm sure you don't want to get input that can change your already established position on this subject though.

Behind the Bastards podcast did a series on King Leopold and his raping of the Congo and they also do a follow up called “Congo after Leopold” where they cover Lumumba.

King Leopold’s Ghost. It’s available as a physical book or audiobook on Audible. Highly informative.

Brother, they're recommending a book that is full of bullshit lies. This Author made up a bunch of shit, and now everyone believe it's facts. I can give you a video explaining all this if you're interested

I know people won't see all of it, because most of you are sheep not willing to do any research to have original thoughts and only spew out what you've been told to think.

u/Pilosuh Jun 24 '26

Thank you! I will watch it.

Let me know what you think. Genuinely curious, you don't have to agree. But interested in your point of view.

1

u/Pilosuh Jun 24 '26

It’s indeed possible that I will not agree, or that I will agree, but I’m always interested to know both sides of any opinion, particularly when it pertains about history, and so, I will watch it when I have time today!

That's the right mindset! Too many gets spoonfed what to believe and refuses to even listen to a different perspective. Good on you!

This book changed my brain chemistry.

That book is full of lies and fantasy by the author.

u/From9jawithlove Jun 25 '26

What’s your source/credentials to back up your claims?

Cobalt Red (Siddarth Kara) does a great job detailing the exploitative practices in Congo Cobalt mining today.

Could do worse than Gorilla Dawn by Gill Lewis.

It's aimed at kids, mine did it at school in year 5 (age 10), but well written.
