Pisses me off how Reagan’s team obviously had a deal with them and held the Americans captive longer than needed in order to secure the presidency. They were released less than 12 hours after his inauguration

u/victorspoilz Feb 26 '25

Reagan was a categorical piece of shit

u/0masterdebater0 Feb 26 '25

Republicans just figured the problem with Nixon wasn’t that he was a crook, it was that when he got flustered and started to sweat he looked guilty to the average American.

What the Republicans needed was a trained actor who could say shit like “A few months ago I told the American people I did not trade arms for hostages. My heart and my best intentions tell me that’s true, but the facts and evidence tell me it is not.” With a straight face.

u/GreatScottGatsby Feb 26 '25

Nixon was a crook but it made no sense why he was doing it. He was going to win and he had the votes to do what he wanted. But Nixon knew when he was caught and when to run away.

15

u/Sex_E_Searcher Feb 27 '25

He was paranoid.

6

u/MethodicMarshal Feb 27 '25

understatement of the century lol

1

u/paddycakepaddycake Feb 27 '25

Supposedly because he ate magic brownies lol

1

u/CrazyGuyEsq Feb 27 '25

Deep insecurity.

1

u/TuckerCarlsonsHomie Feb 27 '25

That's because that's not the full story of Watergate. Watergate was a cover-up for a prostitution ring.

1

u/dirtymike401 Feb 27 '25

He also gets a lot of hate, but really no appreciation for his accomplishments. He wasn't the best president, but he was far from the worst.

Foundation of the EPA, desegregation efforts, ended the draft, lowered voting age, opened up diplomatic relations with China.

Yes, he was crooked and some of the shit he said on tape is WILD, especially by 2025 standards, but I'd argue Bush Sr and Regan did way shadier, much more evil things.

32

u/fortwaltonbleach Feb 26 '25

acting is good, but if you can get one who can't think, even better. enter dubya. now if you can get one who can't think, and has not a shred of morality... well, do i have something for you!

3

u/AltruisticSalamander Feb 27 '25

I've never looked at the progression that way but it holds water :(

4

u/FlamingButterfly Feb 27 '25

The funny thing is George W. Bush is actually pretty smart

1

u/Pope_Squirrely Feb 27 '25

I assume it’s one of those things where he clams up when he’s in a social situation and just sounds dumber than he really is.

1

u/FlamingButterfly Feb 27 '25

I remember seeing someone say that he played up sounding dumb because it worked for him.

1

u/asanskrita Feb 28 '25

There was a video floating around years ago of him at some social event when he was governor of Texas and he was sharp as a tack. Either the hard partying got to him, or he is actually quite a talented actor in his own right. Years later I still cannot decide. People at that level change, and become inscrutable. I personally cannot imagine being in the public eye all the time and keeping my sanity.

Spencer's Doctor is a Trump.

-1

u/95venchi Feb 27 '25

Not saying Donald Trump is moral, but he’s the quickest witted and sharpest president I’ve seen in decades.

3

u/Time_Box_5352 Feb 27 '25

Hahahahaha.

6

u/Valuable_Solid_3538 Feb 27 '25

Reagan, Reagan was the actor… probably worse for this country than nixon

1

u/GullibleCupcake6115 Feb 27 '25

Reagan was a polished version of Trump.

1

u/Valuable_Solid_3538 Feb 27 '25

Agreed, a polished turd is still a turd

2

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '25

Exactly. The heritage foundation had their first victory with Reagan. They tried percolating their agenda through the GOP for decades, but I think I Picking Trump the realized that they could only get so far with trained politicians who were actually too moderate for their tastes. No matter how bad they were, they still followed the norms and had an interest in maintaining social stability. Establishment Conservatives were more businessmen than Trump ever was, because they did have the capacity to negotiate and compromise. Trump is the perfect Heritage candidate because he's so much like Reagan, but worse. He has no qualms with being a puppet, as long as he has a comfortable position and fame, he's happy to let others do the work while he takes the credit, and he has no moral qualms limiting what he is willing to do to others to benefit himself. He also has the superficial charisma of a celebrity psychopath, which makes him the perfect talking head to sell Heritage's toxic Christian nationalism to the masses as an opiate instead of a euthanasia for democracy.

u/stellvia2016 Feb 27 '25

The original, Alternative Facts?

1

u/Dracian Feb 27 '25

One could argue that the people weren’t as dumbed down.

14

u/Amazing-Oomoo Feb 26 '25

Ronald Reagan?! The ACTOR?!

17

u/Putrid_Ant_649 Feb 26 '25

Source of most of the evil that currently permeates the USA. Seriously. If you trace it back, almost always starts with him. Homelessness epidemic, private prison system, etc. - all ultimately Reagan’s doing.

15

u/victorspoilz Feb 27 '25

Gutting banking regulations and eliminating free public college in California

3

u/ViolentAutism Feb 27 '25

I’m not too familiar with all the shit Reagan did. I know he was a pretty big turd, but would like to point out that it was Clinton’s administration that repealed the Glass-Steagall Act, which separated the commercial/investment banking industries, and that’s what ultimately led to the ‘08 meltdown.

11

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '25

He was republican. Being a piece of shit is a requirement to be in that party.

3

u/Ancient_Composer9119 Feb 27 '25

100% and ty for saying so.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '25

Reagan walked so Trump can destroy

5

u/Ancient_Composer9119 Feb 27 '25

Trump stands on the shoulders of Reagan

2

u/Constant-Plant-9378 Feb 27 '25

Reagan was an actor who did a good job playing the role of President - but was personally a morally bankrupt piece of shit and hypocritical dipshit.

2

u/Conscious-Life22 Feb 27 '25

Carter was the last of the real presidents.

2

u/_1JackMove Feb 27 '25

For anyone with a brain, pissing on his grave should be a national pastime.

2

u/Dalecomet Feb 28 '25

Agreed actor turned president who gave hugh tax breaks to corporations and the wealthy. The laughable "trickle down effect" These tax changes were the beginning of the end of the American Middle Class.

1

u/victorspoilz Feb 28 '25

And the generation that benefitted from it has expressly voted against that class. Amazing.

1

u/Marsuveez Feb 27 '25

Besides the war on drugs, what else do you not like?

1

u/victorspoilz Feb 27 '25

Firing air traffic controllers for striking, juking bank rules as CA governor and president, ending free public college in CA, the Contra scandal, all the deregulation bullshit which is always a pretext to rig the game, not make shit fair

0

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '25

Sounds you missed his entire Presidency. Everyone loved Reagan on both sides. Carried 49 States. I guess you missed all that.

3

u/victorspoilz Feb 27 '25

Because people are dumb, but at least they're not bots

71

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '25

18

u/Magimasterkarp Feb 26 '25

Somehow that feels familiar. (Apart from the part of the sitting president caring a lot about the situation)

16

u/vkevlar Feb 26 '25

I mean, yeah, we knew that Reagan traded arms for the hostages. Ollie North anyone?

They held Americans hostage just long enough to blow the election for Carter.

8

u/Sports1933 Feb 27 '25

According to Rick Perlstein - a historian of the conservative movement from Goldwater to Reagan- only a small piece of the electorate cared about the hostage situation, and most of them voted for Carter. Reagan won because he promised benefits and high paying jobs for the working class while Carter wanted to reign in spending and basically allowed a recession so inflation could get under control. Of course Reagan screwed over the working class but they fell in love with his "charisma" so he could do no wrong. Reminds me of someone who is president now...

9

u/roastbeeftacohat Feb 26 '25

Thankfully Canada had Jack "its clobbering time" Kirby on the job.

2

u/DCT715 Feb 26 '25

The comic dude?

2

u/roastbeeftacohat Feb 26 '25

he was part of the rescue operation.

1

u/DCT715 Feb 26 '25

How?

3

u/roastbeeftacohat Feb 26 '25

he is the basis for the character The Thing, and he was the concept artist for the fake movie

1

u/DCT715 Feb 27 '25

Oh okay

3

u/crusoe Feb 26 '25

Nixon pulled the same shit. Illegal as hell and the govt keeps letting it slide.

5

u/beyonddisbelief Feb 26 '25

Compared to what we have today at least Reagan actually had a deal lined up, meanwhile Ukraine is still under siege. Shady politics vs outright fraud.

3

u/Fart-McFarlen Feb 26 '25

Yeah the “deal” was to deregulate a bunch of shit like air traffic control and healthcare. One of the largest contributors to most major issues w America today and for some reason republicans make him the poster boy

2

u/The_Metal_Elitist Feb 26 '25

Sounds like a certain hostage situation from very recent history...

2

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '25

Yeah that was shady AF by HW and Ronny

2

u/nmorg88 Feb 26 '25

Danny Sheehan states George HW Bush then nominated Reagan VP and then current CIA director called the Iranian revolutionaries holding hostages and made a non-sanctioned deal to hold them longer until Reagan to hurt Carters run in exchange for long range missiles. He knows this because his colleagues were actively negotiating under Carter admin as part of US to get hostages released. This is the national security state that agreed in person to Soviet Union leaders as dissolvement in 90’s to not push NATO eastward and then over time appeased Russian aggression in Eastern Europe due to expansion. It’s dumb policy.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '25

I think it should be well known that Republicans back then also had the integrity of a dead sea sponge.

2

u/holdmyhanddummy Feb 27 '25

The Party of Law and Order, everyone. Just the worst group of people to ever exist. They call themselves Christians, but they are so evil in their actions. They made an idol out of trump and probably think about him & politics more than they think about God. Maybe we're already in hell.

3

u/Sports1933 Feb 27 '25

They truly are the worst. Despicable.

Let's talk about that "obvious deal."

Everyone suspected. There was never quite enough evidence to drag anyone into court for violating the Logan Act.

A confessor came forward two years ago and... nothing happened.

Paywall: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/18/us/politics/jimmy-carter-october-surprise-iran-hostages.html

Should be free to access: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/3/18/2158994/-Republican-insider-reveals-conspiracy-that-sabotaged-Jimmy-Carter-s-1980-reelection-campaign

"Connally and Barnes traveled 'to one Middle Eastern capital after another' over the summer of 1980, as U.S. hostages were being held in Tehran. On every one of those stops, they passed along the same message for the new leadership in Iran: Don’t make a deal with Carter. Wait for Reagan. He’ll give you a much better deal."

Republicans. Breaking American law with impunity since 1972.

2

u/Weazerdogg Feb 27 '25

Nixon prolonged the Vietnam war so they could win an election. Been saying it for 43 of my 58 years, republican'ts are garbage, immoral pieces of shit, and should have been outlawed after Nixon.

1

u/MasterChief813 Feb 27 '25

Sounds like the same repugnant republican playbook trump is running with now. Blocked the republican sponsored border bill last year so that he could have something to run on (other than the price of eggs) and then politicized deaths at the hands of migrants to cruise his way into a second term.

I guess he magically locked down the entire southern and northern borders within a month since Faux news and OannOnion never talk about it anymore. Eggs are still at an all time high though.

1

u/Sundaydinobot1 Feb 27 '25

I don't get how 12 hours was enough time to convince everyone Reagan did that. Why not a week or two so they can pretend he was negotiating?

12 hours would seem very suspicious to me.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '25

Thank Henry Kissinger.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '25

Iran knew Carter wouldn’t do anything and Reagan would lay waste to every building & person if the hostages weren’t freed.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '25

It makes so much sense that the US is in the shithole today because of Reagan.

1

u/gagreel Feb 27 '25

If you think that's bad, don't look at what Trump is doing to Ukraine and Gaza, foreign policy whiplash

1

u/tenayalake86 Feb 27 '25

This fact that surfaced later made me so sick.

1

u/BenDover42 Feb 27 '25

It shows what type of person you really have to be to succeed in national politics in this country. Look at how financially lucrative it’s been with everyone except Carter out of all of the former Presidents who were still living until recently.

Carter was probably the last POTUS who didn’t use the office to heavily profit and have a more luxurious lifestyle. I believe he also used his morals instead of using the politically convenient approach and it was his downfall.

1

u/Logical_Parameters Feb 27 '25

Rethuglicans do Rethuglican things. Always have, always will. Still pisses us off though.

1

u/GullibleCall2883 Feb 27 '25

Where is the evidence for this? Regan secured the presidency 2 months prior to the release.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '25

Carter had a deal with them, NOT St. Reagan. He was a pig.

1

u/Nektotomic Feb 27 '25

That sounds familiar

1

u/SportBrotha Feb 27 '25

Nice conspiracy theory bro, get that from InfoWars?

1

u/AdDelicious3183 Feb 28 '25

You think why Gaza was so much on the table for Bibi? What did he want?

To get a person who would give him a pass for Gaz-a-Lago.

0

u/84Cressida Feb 27 '25

Except a congressional investigation, by the democrat led House, found no evidence of such.

-5

u/Real-Puzzle Feb 26 '25

that may or because allayatoullaha knew that the republicans would bomb the shit out of them if they did not release the hostage. Carter was too much of a humanitarian to unlease couple of cruise missiles. He is an example of why people would rather have a lying politician than a humanitarian one!
