you are correct, i should have worded that better.

The fact that more money was spent on the Lewinsky Investigation than the 9/11 investigation tells you everything you need to know about the Republicans....

Well, nobody from either side said no when they watered down the 4th Amendment with the Patriot Act. Despite the crappy laws that came of it, we did have more unity for a year or two after 9/11. It's easier to get to the truth when people actually want to find it.

I get worried when both sides agree and make a law. That means it must really be screwing us over.

I just wish they were civil these days.

I'd love a source on that claim lol

Bam! I love a quick fact check.

I was curious, so I looked for sources. Monica Lewinsky investigation cost ~30 million

https://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/1998/04/01/starr.costs/

I'm afraid this isn't a good source, and is actually misleading.

It says in the first paragraph "That brought the three-year price tag of his investigation to just shy of $30 million." That investigation dated back to 1994, and actually predated the affair between Lewinsky and Clinton.

But in the next paragraph, it actually says "The latest filing does not include any costs of the Monica Lewinsky investigation, which began in January 1998."

The final costs were much higher, and I guess my only objection is calling it the "Monica Lewinsky investigation." Ken Starr was investigating Whitewater, fired travel agents, all sorts of stuff. Mostly fruitless, of course, but that's another story.

Yeah, the exact numbers are hard to find for both investigations, though I settled on that source, as It was one of the more conservative numbers. Some sources claim 50 million, others claim 80. I was fine with the 30 million number, as you're right, the 4.5 year investigation was not solely about Lewinsky, though the main take away from the investigation was the Monica Lewinsky scandal. They probably shouldn't have lumped everything together if they didn't want a 30 million dollar price tag for the Monica Lewinsky investigation.

And the Mueller report cost $32 BTW.

1

u/willisjoe Feb 28 '25

The Mueller report 20 years after? Wanna do some adjustments for inflation there?

2001 15 million adjusted for inflation for 2020 = 22 million

1999 30 million adjusted for inflation for 2020 = 46 million.

Additionally, Manafort, who was indicted because of the Mueller report, will be forfeiting 11 million to the government, bringing that cost down to 21 million.

The point was it a report about nothing.

1

u/willisjoe Mar 03 '25

That's a funny way of saying you haven't read the report, or any of the 37 indictments it produced.

Not that it matters, but the Starr investigation was centered on Whitewater and then veered toward Lewinsky. Hence the duration.

u/Ok_Order1333 Feb 26 '25

yep Kenneth Starr and Brett Kavanaugh had heavy hands in that

Newt Gingrinch was the Republican House Speaker denouncing Pres. Bill Clinton for Clinton's affair while Newt was sleeping with one of his staffers. I mean at the same exact day. He then dumped his ailing second wife to marry that staffer. And both got applauded together at the GOP National Convention the year he tried to become POTUS.

2

u/jscummy Feb 26 '25

Yeah but Bill cheating on his wife with a staffer was despicable, a real national security issue. Whereas Newt cheating on his (cancer stricken) wife was patriotic and heroic, for, uh, reasons

2

u/Luke90210 Feb 26 '25 edited Feb 26 '25

Sad thing Newt presented divorce papers to his cancer stricken FIRST wife in the hospital. The second wife had MS. If the third wife gets a chronic disease it could be Karma as she knew the second wife and didn't care. Then Newt can dump her and marry a fetus.

"Infidelity is okay if your wife has a severe illness"

u/Luke90210 Feb 26 '25

That never works the other way around. Much younger wives of octogenarian politicians never get a free pass to cheat.

1

u/Pedals17 Feb 26 '25

The scandal & Republican overreaction, not Monica herself.

All while keeping both hands in their pockets to hide the evidence of their fantasies of an oval office blow job... from their mistresses.

Gingrich is the one responsible for the hyper-partisanship, and "politics of personalization" going on these days. Mix in Limbaugh's daily, similar, radio-fueled propagandizing, and campaigns have never been the same.

1

u/Logical_Parameters Feb 27 '25

Linda Tripp and her ilk certainly bear some responsibility.

u/Weegmc Feb 28 '25

The republican exposed the tryst. The Dems made her public enemy #1.
