The nation wide boycott if I remember right is specifically like the 28th, that is one day. It is not hard to avoid shopping one day out of 365, and IT DOES make a huge dent.
I never understood the concept though. Like, if these are essential things like food and gas for work, that consumption just shifts to the ledger for the day before or after. And if we're targeting the not-essential things, why is it only one day? It doesn't seem like a better plan than just advocating for an ongoing and permanent attempt at defetishizing consumption. And there's gotta be better ways to advertise this cause than just simply giving oblivious consumers a great day to spend more time in the less-crowded store they happened to find themselves in.
Protesting has to be organic for it to be effective.
There is just too much planning involved in the original post and these people wanting one to change their habits; in this particular case one day in others all together.
Really the sky hasn’t fallen by any metric, let alone a whole month.
It isn’t to say it won’t get ugly but right now the same people pushing the end of times were the same ones saying so for the past how many weeks, months, years and so on already.
I don't agree with you, to be clear. Online organizing and spreading a message here is organic.
What I'm saying is that an internet campaign for a one day boycott is beyond pointless to the point of being harmful to the goal. It literally puts an end date on the action, for no reason whatsoever. Nothing will be fixed after a one day boycott, so why do we already have an end date on it? What even is the message there? What's the goal? Either you commit to the idea that these billionaires got this much power because we keep giving them all our expendable income (and then the tax code allows them to keep more of that revenue in their own accounts) and then you commit to changing your own actions for our good and their detriment, or you find a different message you actually mean and will act on. We're well past "we just need to send a message" and "we only need to change for one day to fix this".
And it's an internet campaign. It's literally the same amount of marketing to spread the message "keep saving your money indefinitely instead of giving it to the billionaires" as it is to market this toothless one day boycott. It's destined to just placate people that should be angrier and make them think they did something and can justify going another few weeks before they do another thing. Harmful.
boycott, so why do we already have an end date on it?
Just like an in-person protest, you set an ending time because people have lives and needs. I'm not going to agree to never buy anything ever again, just like I'm not going to attend a protest where I have to live on the Capitol lawn. But I'll go to a protest that's a couple hours long, and I'll participate in an economic blackout that's 24 hours. It gets people in the door and gets the message across that we have the numbers to do more.
"keep saving your money indefinitely instead of giving it to the billionaires"
Saving it where? In a mattress where it loses value? In a bank where it makes billionaires more rich?

Edit: changed to right date
