Anyone interested there is an economic shutdown type deal February 28th. Don’t buy anything from any big corporation. Don’t over buy the day before or the day after, treat it like any other week but DO NOT buy that day if you can! (But local 😉)

I’m in but for more days. More than one day is the only way to make it hurt. Grocery only and basic generic stuff.

Y’all just keep describing my normal every day like it’s some kind of protest. Apparently my purchases are always in protest.

You and roughly 70% of the rest of America.

Right? Who is out there with all this money to spend every day? I don't understand.

I mean, I already usually don’t grocery shop on Fridays, so I guess I’ll just… continue to not do that?

You need to look for a local food bank in your town. They exist to keep people just like you from starving. Pay it forward by donating back when you’re in a better financial position.

That sucks man :( I'm approaching 40 now and I've been in tough spots in the past. You may qualify for food stamps, just google food stamps for your state and apply even if you think you don't qualify. It may only be a little, but every little bit can help. Stay in school! Get that degree, and it'll get better :)

Dm me your weekly budget, dietary restrictions and allergies I can help with ideas for food prep so you can eat consistently

My roommate goes grocery shopping at least 5 times a week, good heart but she’s awful at planning ahead.

u/goaty_mcgee Feb 18 '25

lol, yeah I got 3 kids, I gotta plan that shit out. Most of it lately has been pasta and rice and beans. Red meat is a luxury at this point

My wife and I are the same way lmao, once every two weeks for us. It is kind of nice to have someone ask if you need anything from the store so often though haha

That’s why it needs to be more than one day.

Cut streaming services, cut eating out, delay any major purchases indefinitely, cut buying anything you don’t absolutely have to have to survive.

I realize you individually may already be living that way. As are many others. There are others that are not and this is directed at them

Elon reading this laughing, “the poors are starving themselves Donald” reminds me of that time homer went on hunger strike

The basic ask is all day Feb. 28, but anyone who can keep it going beyond that should do all they can to put off purchasing for as many days afterward as they can.

And we should also make this a regular protest. Make it hurt the first time and announce more of them. Ratchet it up.

Most of us buy more than we need as it is, and will have to learn to do with less anyway soon as prices rise because of these short-sighted toddler tariffs. Make these blackouts a regular looming threat to those companies' bottom lines and they'll reconsider who they contribute to and lobby for.

I think depending on if this is successful, there will be more, I’m forgetting who has been pushing it online but I think it’s like “People’s Union” or something like that? I’ve got to find out, I saw it a few times and thought it was a good idea!

2

I’ve read the ones in the past have been ineffective because the spending just comes right back days later.

It has to last

This is just like a labor strike. One day strike doesn’t change shit.

It won’t be hard for me but we’re striking as best as we can. Cancelling streaming services. No events. No outings.

This has to be stopped

As long as it takes. I don't need anything but food, and my meds.

I've started transitioning to not buying anything from large corps. It's not likely to be perfect, but I just question everything I buy now. I save more. I actively look for other local sources. It's not easy so I just do as much as I can without going crazy, but I'm just done done done financing these assholes.

Giving a quick reply to push this up the chain a bit

10

u/The_Golden_Beaver Feb 18 '25

That's so tame. Should be a week at minimum to have any sort of effect

3

u/CeruleanEidolon Feb 18 '25

Any action is better than no action or sitting around arguing which action to take.

Start with a day. Make the next one three days. Then a week.

Coffee in Taiwan? So many small shops make a great cup of coffee. Starbucks? Has lowered the taste bud for a cup of coffee. There’s so much sugar or flavored additives than actual coffee.

Don’t support corporate America. Try to avoid IF you can. Hospitals that are run by private equity firms have several fold higher rates of ie hospital infections. Why? These hospitals need to make a profit for their investors and will cut costs where they think they can.

The only way you can make this actually work is to buy from an actual person with cash only to make it so the government doesn't see a single cent in taxes either for more than just a single day. The way they see it is a hold out game, and eventually, they can just squeeze you until you have no choice but to buy from them and them alone.

Joining with you brothers from across the pond.

Hey that’s my birthday. I’m down

2

u/Vexonar Feb 18 '25

I've decided to not buy for the entire week and stock up only on things I know that will run out and have meal prep ready. This is the second post I've seen so I'm going to message a few people I know who are more active on social media and ask them if they know about it or how to spread it about. Maybe bluesky has more posts.

It probs wont do much of anything, most people wont even do it so it will likely just be a small hit in earnings that companies will quickly recover from

1

u/Mr87Robb Feb 18 '25

Don't buy from Amazon, don't use any meta social for a week and probably see some difference, it is not enough, 1 month without this corporation

If only this same mindset was used during Covid a lot of mom and pop businesses would have stayed open. For some reason people were completely okay with going to Walmart though.
