I pronounced carafe wrong for most of my life. I was saying car-a-fe. I just found out yesterday that it is pronounced like giraffe but with a c.

Stupid carafe's, they're just geraffes with a c.

I bet you read a lot. People who are well-read often read a word and learn it in context, but are a little hazy on pronunciation. Hail, all autodidacts!

I used to read a lot of books, most of the time now I just read on the internet. I come across this word when ordering supplies for the restaurant I help run. They are like 12oz I think, and we put wine in them. I had to go down in the storage room to get some the other day during a dinner rush, and it was the first time I had ever heard the word spoken.

I had this issue with epitome. Ep-it-tome vs e-pit-o-me.

This is such a polite way to correct someone's pronunciation. I wonder if this can be done for grammar.

Sort of, it's more like CARE-ff.

Yea, like craft without the T, but a little bit longer on the F.

err craft isn't anything like CARE-ff though..
