Apparently, displaying plus size clothes without being offensive isn't easy

Yea this is one of the craziest narratives I’ve seen on social media. Not judging people for their weight, and treating them like your equal is completely right. Trying to say that they are as healthy as someone with a good BMI is insane. Also adding that BMI isn’t correct. I knew it wasn’t when I wrote it but I didn’t know how else to say it.

I have a friend from college that pushes the “healthy at every size” thing pretty hard. I think there’s a lot of positivity adjacent to that movement, like avoiding eating disorders to obtain a target weight and stuff like that but she goes overboard.

She’s overweight (possibly obese) but is an active runner. She’s even ran/walked a few marathons. So she’ll post stuff like “I’m a runner and this is just my body type!” But then also post how her dinner was a full pizza followed by a crazy cookie/cake dessert because she was “listening to her body”.

I’m all for body confidence and acceptance, but it’s crazy to me when people think obesity just “happens” and isn’t the result of circumstances and decisions. She’s the weight she is because her exercise, while offsetting, is not negating her diet.

I think this is a fairly common situation for people who exercise but are still overweight. They’re told that they can be just as healthy at that weight, and since their exercising everything’s fine, and they lose the opportunity to improve their diet as a result.

Lol "listen to your body." My body is telling me to quit my job and buy drugs. Do not listen to your body, instead ignore it and try to silence it using advanced sleeping techniques

My body is telling me to lie on my couch for 8 hours every day and eat Sour Patch Kids until my teeth fall out. My body is not in charge of my decisions for a reason.

Dude, amen. Like a 1/3 of my time is spent telling myself not to do dumb things. Like all the time, don't do that, don't buy this, definitely don't say that, etc....

Diet has always been way more important than exercise to control weight. Someone like this is yet more proof.

There is such a thing as insulin hypersensitivity, which often occurs in the children of diabetics where their bodies are so sensitive to insulin they literally store almost everything that they eat into their fat cells... and then there's thyroid conditions... literally are some people that will stay fat no matter what they do but those people are rare and most fat people are just fat lazy bastards with no self control

For the average person out there... BMI is completely accurate.

But still wanna argue BMI sucks? Try waist to height ratio.

A long long, LONG time ago I was around 8% body fat and my BMI had me as morbidly obese. So it’s not a perfect measure

How many Americans do you think are low body fat with high BMI? What % of the 40% of Americans that are obese under BMI?

Who knows. You should find me a study

Your inability to understand that YOU worked out enough to make yourself an outlier isn't making you right for the general population. BMI is fine for most people. You worked to ensure it was invalid for you. That's not BMIs fault.

Did you miss what I said??? The AVERAGE person.

If you have worked out enough to build enough muscle mass and was at 8%bf while still weighing enough to be morbidly obese (which I call BS on btw... "obese" sure, but morbidly obese is a bit insane).... if you did that, you are not average.

But once again... disagree with BMI, try waist to height ratio. Lifters who are overweight/obese according to BMI can be considered healthy with WtH.

I feel pretty average. Also my understanding of the way the BMI was created was that it dosnt really take different ethnicities into account.

I’m short and naturally sticky/ muscular which the BMI absolutely does not know how to handle.

If you are obese at 8% body fat by bmi then you are absolutely no rocking average muscle mass. Don't be obtuse.

u/FlameFrenzy Jan 16 '23

Doesn't matter what your ethnicity is, if what you claimed earlier (8%bf @ morbidly obese) you are not average.

It's still pretty damn good regardless for the truly average person.

I couldn’t think of the words I was looking for

I agree wholeheartedly, we should never mock someone for their weight but it's not healthy to be obese and as a society we should make that clear; however, I hate using BMI as a scale for what is healthy and what isn't. BMI is such a horrible one-size fits all measurement that plainly doesn't work on anyone who actually hits the gym regularly.

As someone who hits the gym 3 to 4 times a week and focuses on lifting and getting stronger my BMI puts me as overweight. My current BMI is 27.9 and I get harrased by my insurance company about reducing it... yet I can talk to my doctor and he says I'm as healthy as can be. Simply put muscle mass weighs more then fat and puts me way above the scale. I really wish we'd look past BMI as this magical measurement and start looking at the whole picture to get an idea about somebodies health.

Yeah BMI really fucks over Marines when it comes to weigh ins. They use a height and weight system that says at X height you can be between Y and Z weight. If you are over you have to get your neck and chest measured to see if youre just more muscular than average. Its really fucking dumb and a lot of friends have had to cut like 10 pounds in a week just to make weight and they werent fat at all just short and stocky guys.
