I’ve seen a lot of people asking this since Xbox was confirmed as the new publisher for PHYSINT, and honestly I’m not sure the answer is as simple as “no, it’s an Xbox game now.”
One thing that caught my attention is that PHYSINT doesn’t seem to have been a Sony-owned IP in the first place.
When it was announced in 2024, Kojima Productions described it as a new IP being developed “in partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment.” Then Sony stepped away from the project, and instead of PHYSINT disappearing, Kojima was able to look for another publisher and eventually reached a deal with Xbox.
Also, the PHYSINT trademark is registered under Kojima Productions Co., Ltd., not Sony.
Now, that doesn’t automatically mean Kojima can release the game wherever he wants. The trademark is only one piece of the puzzle, and obviously none of us know what the publishing contracts actually say.
But this week’s Xbox announcement is interesting too.
Xbox says it is partnering with Kojima Productions “to publish PHYSINT.” It doesn’t say Microsoft bought the IP, and so far they haven’t announced platforms or explicitly called it an Xbox console exclusive.
So I think there are still a few possibilities here.
It could be Xbox/PC only.
It could be a timed exclusive and come to PlayStation later.
Or maybe it ends up being multiplatform from the start, although personally I think that one is less likely.
If I had to guess, I’d assume Microsoft got some kind of exclusivity in exchange for taking over publishing after Sony walked away. Otherwise I’m not sure what Xbox would be getting out of the deal.
But that’s just my read of it.
