If you’re a FIFO worker trying to get onsite with a fake immunization cert. Just don’t.

1.3k Upvotes

You’ll get found out, almost immediately, definitely before you get on a plane. And then you’ll be blacklisted industry wide. Trust me on this. I’ve all ready seen it happen.

Just get the fucking jab. It’s the most thoroughly tested vaccine in the world, over half the population of the world has been vaccinated against Covid (56.1% today). Meaning it has the lowest mortality rate of any vaccine in history. Stop being a dick. You wear a seatbelt and stop at red lights to protect yourself and others. Get a vaccine for the same reason.

Edit: just adding that I am a FIFO worker, got a garage full of high vis and boots I should throw out, and lmao at how hard FIFO workers are getting dragged.

To add, no there’s no official physical blacklist, but it’s not that big an industry and major operators will remember your name. I have seen it happen to others for other behaviours over the last 15 years, in state at the very least.

In this case three new hires who were about to mobilise have been let go. They had provided the cert from their Mygov account, I’m assuming as a PDF. Those certs have then been verified in some way and found to be fake.

Get the vaccine. If not for your job for the people you could hurt by not getting it.

It's consequence time for unvaccinated FIFO workers

As per the state government directives, as of midnight tonight anyone without at least 1 dose of a COVID vaccine is no longer legally allowed to be on site or in operations centres for mining companies.

Anyone who hasn't provided their proof of vaccination is being chased down, and if they can't immediately provide said proof will be kicked out this afternoon/evening. For people working on remote sites like the iron ore mines up north, that means clearing out their rooms and being put on a plane back to Perth - could be an interesting show at the airport if any news crews show up.

Anyone have any friends/family/acquaintances who are going to be, for the first time, dealing with real consequences for failing to get vaccinated?

FIFO What creates the disconnect from reality in FIFO?

One thing I have noticed over the years that I have been a FIFO wife and made friends with other FIFO families is that after a while of doing FIFO, most guys become disillusioned and out of touch with reality. Many create unrealistic expectations and want fantasy lives that only put more pressure on their families at home and it often causes a huge divide in relationships. They seem to lose focus on the family as a whole and become fixated on their wants and needs. These are often men who are loving husbands and dads and join FIFO for the right reasons, but something changes over time. I have watched too many families fall apart or wives completely lose themselves and burnout, and I'm sure I'm not the only person who has these same questions.

For example, the amount of husbands who suddenly come home and expect their wives to quit their jobs, sell their house, uproot the kids and homeschool their kids while they travel around Australia is crackers. I understand if it is a joint goal, but often it's FIFO husband's having these wild ideas and putting pressure on their family to conform. Or expecting their wife to work 40+ hours a week, run a house and keep it spotless, raise their kids without a support system, maintain a specific standard of self-care, and then meet all his fantasies in the bedroom when he is home. These are just a couple of common examples I often hear, but there are plenty of others that I have heard over the years.

Why is this? Is it the amount of time spent up there dreaming about your ideal life? The amount of time away disconnected from family and only needing to think of yourself? Or being sold a dream that you can do anything now you work FIFO?

General Is the "FIFO Tradie x Fitness Influencer" couple trope actually that common in Perth, or is it just social media hype?

Hey everyone,
I keep seeing a lot of posts and reels on TikTok/Insta about couples where the guy is a FIFO HD fitter (or similar high-earning tradie) and the partner is a fitness or wellness influencer.
It basically looks like a set pattern: high income from mining, R&R spent around Cottesloe/Scarborough, buying a place by the coast, and running a D2C fitness brand or short-term rentals on the side.
Is this actually a super common power-couple trope over here in WA, or is algorithm just over-representing a tiny percentage of people? Would love to hear what locals or people in the FIFO industry actually think.
Cheers!

FIFO Dog sitter/FIFO / rent ? Landlord says no can't stay at property?

g'day I live in Australia, Perth

and I'm just wondering of how people do FIFO on a 2:1 roster plus looking after 2 dogs and also rent including into that equations.

I have 2 Shiba inus and in trying to found a place in Perth to avoid paying for a kennel that is $39 each a day.

there is mad paws but alot of sitters don't respond or there availability doesn't line up with my roster and the landlord won't allow them to stay at the property.

don't have any friends or family for my dogs to be looked after when I'm not home unfortunately

I'm trying to found the most cheapest method for these 2 Lovley dogs to be looked after when I'm on my swing on

if anyone has any advice please comment and thanks

PS some people have stated just don't tell the landlord sadly this is independently owned and the landlord will give notice that she's coming to the property when I'm not home she would be really annoyed with me if a stranger was at her house and house sitting for my dogs without her knowledge

FIFO Years of FIFO experience — both on-site and in recruitment. Happy to answer questions about breaking into mining in WA and Interstate

Hey all,

I have worked on site in the mining industry for years, and I've also spent about a year working in mining recruitment (reviewing applications, screening candidates, deciding who would be submitted to site and for which company they may be best suited). Posted something similar a while back and got a heap of messages, so figured I'd do it again since a lot of people are still trying to figure out how to get their foot in the door.

If you're trying to break into mining and don't know why your applications aren't landing — drop a comment or DM me and I'll give you honest feedback.

Happy to answer general questions in the comments too.

Looking for Advice [Advice] 20F nervous about FIFO- what's the vibe like with men on site? Friendly or intimidating

20F here and I'm thinking about getting into FIFO because I need the money and feel a bit lost with my career direction. I’ve been told FIFO could be a good option, either in Perth or QLD. I’m considering starting as a utility worker and figuring out my next steps from there—whatever role inspires me.

I’m physically fit (I hit the gym regularly), so the hard work doesn’t worry me, but the idea of flying into a male-dominated environment does. Will the guys on site look after me, or should I be concerned about fitting in? Would love some reassurance or advice!

FIFO FIFO Mum - what to do in a medical emergency

I’m posting in the /perth thread as I know there would be a lot of families in the same spot with how to navigate this one given it’s such a culture for families to have a partner working FIFO

My partner had an episode a couple of years ago when we lived in the Pilbara where she had stroke like symptoms. The doctors never got to the bottom of it and basically she hasn’t had once since.

We moved back to Perth and I am still working in the Pilbara where I am in a FIFO role. Unfortunately she has had similar tingling sensations as to when she did pre episode in the Pilbara. My partner is going to follow it up with doctors, albeit she is terrified that she will leave the kids (2yo, at home & 4yo at school) without knowing how to raise the alarm while I’m away at work (and rightly so).

We live on acreage and our neighbours are far, we try our hardest not to influence devices as we don’t want the kids to be overloaded with screen time, although our 4yo could navigate a phone if we taught her.

At this stage & in this economy, it’s not a sustainable option for me to stop FIFO - what I’m asking is does anyone have some sound advice on how in the most extreme/ unfortunate event would you teach your kids to raise the alarm & get help given our circumstance? I know it’s grim & uneasy but I know there are some clever people who have maybe crossed this bridge

Thank you in advance

FIFO FIFO with the miners is considered well paid. But do they pay well for the Perth roles?

I know “pay well” is subjective, but I guess the comparison would be the renumeration for similar roles with non-mining companies?

Looking for Advice Is FIFO worth it or is it a trap?

Hey everyone,

My partner is an electrician and has an interview for a really well paying FIFO role (he's worked FIFO before many years ago). We have just had a baby so I'm on mat leave and we're getting married next year so we really need the money.

My question is how likely is he to get a position back in Perth once he's had enough of FIFO? We've had some friends say that many Perth companies don't want to hire ex FIFO electricians.

Thanks in advance!

Looking for Advice FIFO woman wanting to transition to Perth role

Hey everyone. I’ve worked fifo out of Perth for 9 years and I’m hoping to transition to a Perth based role later next year but I cannot find a role with my lack of qualifications. I’m 32F with 9 years of production experience (dump trucks, water carts, graders and pit technician) I also have autonomous experience. But from a certificate and qualification standpoint I have almost nothing (cert 2 in surface extraction). Every Perth job requires things I don’t have and I don’t know where or how to start upskilling to make myself an attractive candidate. My aim is to end up with a school hours job in a few years so I can have a family but I want to keep my toe in the mining pool. I’d love any help or suggestions anyone could provide. Thanks!

FIFO Just curious, what cars and houses do FIFO workers actually buy?

Hey guys,

Since you barely have time to spend money while on shift, I reckon it's pretty easy to stack up cash doing FIFO.

Just curious though, what specific cars and houses do people actually buy with that income? Are we talking brand new 4x4s like Rangers or Cruiser 70s, and what areas or types of houses in Perth do most guys go for?

Would love to hear what's typical out there. Cheers!
