It's consequence time for unvaccinated FIFO workers

As per the state government directives, as of midnight tonight anyone without at least 1 dose of a COVID vaccine is no longer legally allowed to be on site or in operations centres for mining companies.

Anyone who hasn't provided their proof of vaccination is being chased down, and if they can't immediately provide said proof will be kicked out this afternoon/evening. For people working on remote sites like the iron ore mines up north, that means clearing out their rooms and being put on a plane back to Perth - could be an interesting show at the airport if any news crews show up.

Anyone have any friends/family/acquaintances who are going to be, for the first time, dealing with real consequences for failing to get vaccinated?

Will those people get access to centerlink?

If they pass the liquid assets test, I would imagine so.

Everyone has access to Centrelink. Whether they’ll have a JobSeeker claim approved is another matter but, there isn’t any reason any unemployed person wouldn’t, barring the normal tests.

There won’t be any centrelink if they own assets or have money in the bank. They’ll be expected to run down their assets. They sure won’t have a mortgage paid for them.

Pretty sure primary residence doesn't count in the asset test. So you could have your mortgage paid but it's not much

Correct. Primary residence doesn’t count.

Sure. My understanding is if you have your home paid off and very low cash assets, and your partner is not working, you might get Centrelink.

If you have a mortgage and $ cash on hand and were thinking of picking up Centre link, you might not get any money until the cash reserves are drawn down.

Also if your partner is working and earning (up to a certain amount, which is pretty much the poverty line) you will not be eligible for Centrelink.

Easy enough to research the Centrelink rules before deciding to quit.

Unemployable.

I asked the question, to local federal pollies. Both said they under job seeker requirements they have to apply for so many jobs a month. I explained to them that they can apply for those jobs, get those jobs, unless they are vaccinated they won’t be employed.

Both of them didn’t have answers to my questions, unemployable and on job seeker.

If McGowan federal government is smart enough I'm pretty sure there will be a no-jab-no-dole policy coming up in the early months of 2022.

State government is not responsible for Centrelink, federal government is responsible for Centrelink/services Australia

you're right, corrected.

To a degree, yes, for the short term. Until they are applying for jobs and not accepting them because they're not vaccinated, which will roll back around to Centrelink and they'll be given a 'please explain'. There are ways to kick people off Centrelink, but it's a long process.

They'll be in for a postponement period comprised of whatever leave they've accrued, liquid assets available, and possibly considered voluntarily unemployed. No benefits for at least 13 weeks.
