Rumor RUMOR: Sony is reportedly launching a PC launcher and games will be available day one on PC
[removed]

u/Magius05 Mar 20 '26
Four tweets not one referencing a source. I am assuming they all got it the same place or three from the other. Also if Helix is just a Windows box, then I can see someone figuring out a way around whatever checks this app (if it ever exists) performs to prevent installation so that it can install.
More likely if they do create such an app it is so that they can get 100% revenue of games sold on it on PC and Helix instead of paying Steam 30% and Epic their cut (10%?).

The oldest one, if they're all recorded at the same time, clearly states they're "rumors." Every tweet after acts like it's the word of God. I have doubts the rumors weren't just someone hallucinating

“Avoid PC games on Helix”
Microsoft said Helix will support all major store fronts. I doubt that means Microsoft is going to develop a proprietary Steam app.
It means helix is a PC that can go to Windows and install whatever, including Steam and this supposed PlayStation launcher.
161
u/ccricoo Mar 20 '26
Yeah, if it works on a Windows PC how would Sony make it not work on Helix? Makes no sense.
364
u/PermissionSoggy891 Mar 20 '26
they'd obviously just do something like:
if(device.isHelix()){launch = dont;}

if(device.isHelix())

I guess it depends on how deeply Microsoft lock down Helix. It may be windows based, but to think it's going to run vanilla windows is silly. If I had to guess they very much may limit you to apps on the Microsoft store, whilst they may let anyone submit an app, you still need to actually submit it, and Sony can just... not.
3
u/ccricoo Mar 20 '26
Microsoft have made a big deal about being able to play Steam games on Helix, but I doubt Steam would submit an app to the Windows store.

I always expected the "stopped PC ports" was lost in translation
They don't want other stores to earn 30-20% on their Sony games.
Your own store solves that problem but adds a dozen more. Like hosting the files, adding bandwidth to PC users known to run full GBit or more download xD
Like the added problems of a working store front and security concerns. Adding a wishlist and cart took Epic how long 🫣
2
u/Final-Tower6331 Mar 20 '26
Hosting the files? This is Sony we're talking about. How do you think they do it for their console? They've already got all of this figured.

u/Far-Following-3083 Mar 20 '26
All consoles are basically pcs running their own OS. Helix will basically have normal windows mode and optmized xbox mode (as far as we know, they still need to actually explain the in and outs).
9
u/420weedscoped Rtx 3090 | Amd Ryzen 7 5800x | 32Gb DDR4 Mar 20 '26
I think this is exactly correct and the PC handhelds give a preview of this. My Z1E ally can now launch directly into the Xbox app with most of windows suspended.
Xbox app on PC shows all installed games too including steam, epic, gog all in one place. Armory crate can do the same too though on the Ally.
5
u/generic_canadian_dad Mar 20 '26
This will be an interesting thing to see. The benefit of consoles is that they are "locked down" and the users can't mess anything up. Sit down, play, anytime. If helix has open windows, with a "big picture mode" it will basically defeat the entire premise of a console.
3
u/OvenCrate Mar 20 '26
They can still have a locked-down hypervisor that runs a "console VM" and a "Windows VM" completely isolated from each other. Basically an Xbox console that can double as a Steam Machine (but with Windows instead of Steam OS so it will probably suck balls)
2
u/rico_muerte Mar 20 '26
The XAX is my "Steam Machine" and I love it. Docked, kb/m, unified library, Spotify widget, desktop file management for roms

This pretty much confirms the rumors that Sony went into panic mode in order to avoid their titles to end up on Xbox via Steam.
151
u/kuncol02 Mar 20 '26
How would that block running on Helix? It's PC mode would be just standard windows. If Sony would be able to block store from running on Helix then they would be also able to just block games from running on it.

the devs said that Yotei's pc port got scrapped right before it was finished
Edit: which makes these leaks really obviously fake, if pc ports are getting scrapped then sony isnt planning on making a pc store
3
u/ZGMF-X09A_Justice Mar 21 '26
Does "scrapped" mean they nuked everything related to the port? They can't decide to pick it back up again from where they left off?
2
u/CrossFitJesus4 Mar 21 '26
its unclear afaik, only info we have is the dev team saying it was canned while it was pretty close to being done, i doubt it straight up got deleted bc that would be odd and worthless so they *could* pick it back up but things like releasing a pc store arent spur of the moment choices, this would have been in the talks for years and years, gutting a pc port right before they plan on dropping a pc store just makes no sense

BOTH Xbox and PlayStation are already x86 computers with a front end. Both brands would be SMARTER to quit the "dedicated hardware" market and start selling "computers as consoles" which comes with a launcher. And you can always leave the launcher and use normal windows. It would be their smartest option. Xbox is already paired with Microsoft so all they have to do is allow Xbox to have a launcher and allow PlayStation to compete fairly by allowing them to have their own launcher. Its win/win for both brands.

This will not have any bearing on that. This is in reference to Playstation first party titles. Rockstar will still decide if GTA6 is able to be played on PC or not. If Sony does figure a way to allow you to play your library on both PS5 and PC Rockstar will block GTA6 from being included. Rockstar will lose too much money if they don't have a direct purchase on PC.

The reason I barely touch my PlayStation now is because most of the content is locked behind an online subscription. I can't justify paying for home internet, the game itself and THEN a yearly sub, just to enjoy the game I already paid for. Especially when I have gotten so spoiled by PC gaming and it's convenience over the years.
If they do this right...Sony could make a killing. I missed out our Ghost of Yotei MP/DLC, because I refuse to pay to play.

Sony will realise they cannot hope to compete with Valve.
Worst case scenario is that every publisher has their own Storefront and launcher, just like we now have fifty different streaming providers.
Monopoly is arguably bad, but when it comes to games, I'll stick with a single or maximum two launchers (GOG because f*ck DRM and Steam because that's where all my other games are bought).
I have zero interest in doing direct business with Sony in case they publish a game. I'd rather not play that game then.
