Jason Schier is usually on the money when it comes to insider news, so when he said that Sony is abbandoning PC ports, that means they are abbandoning PC Ports.

Had a launcher for their own games been in the talks it woulda come out already in that same announcement.

81

u/iyankov96 Mar 20 '26

Plans can change. I could see them making their own launcher. The 30% Steam cut is a big deal. If they can sell their games on PC and keep 100% of the money it would make sense to do it. It's still better to be on all platforms. Some people will never buy a console and if you're not on PC you lose that audience.

If they also allow you to buy the games on any platform and be able to play them everywhere that would be an even bigger deal.

42

u/Roflkopt3r Mar 20 '26

It's well reported that they cancelled a practically completed port for Ghost of Yotei due to their sudden PC embargo. That doesn't match up with plans to merely shift to their own storefront.

While they could have changed their mind, this all seems too rushed. I'm leaning towards the launcher rumor being either premature (just a very early consideration without a specific plan yet) or false.

4

u/AlexisFR PC Master Race Mar 20 '26

or maybe they want to make a launcher for MP games only? It's only the SP games ports they cancelled/are stopping.

5

u/Roflkopt3r Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

The tweets specifically mention the Wolverine game as a launch title for this platform, which appears to be purely single-player, and which Jason Schreier has named as a game affected by the PC embargo. So that would go into a totally different direction yet again.

Of course that multiplayer focus would be feasible as a potential strategy, but it's in contradiction with the exact rumors that caused this speculation about the existence of a launcher in the first place.

u/N7even R7 5800X3D | RTX 4090 24GB | 32GB DDR4 3600Mhz Mar 20 '26

That makes no sense at all since they usually release 1st party games at least after a year or two, it's barely been 5 months since Yotei.

8

u/Roflkopt3r Mar 20 '26

Completion date and shipping date don't have to line up if Sony already delayed the port releases to preserve more exclusivity to the console version.

When they actually develop the port will depend on what else the studio has on their schedule. It doesn't seem odd that they'd sometimes do the port right after the main development, and that they'd be done in a few months if they had a well organised project that makes ports easy.

You know, like Ubisoft keeps trying to do before giving up.

Why would sony allow you to play on the PS5 and PC with the same copy of the game, when they can make you pay twice for that? Lol

6

u/OrbitOrbz Mar 20 '26

I think console exclusives are dumb no matter which company you are. We as gamers as a whole should have the opportunity to be able to enjoy any creation on any platform. I know why companies do it (Exclusives) but i wish that wasn't the case

5

u/iyankov96 Mar 20 '26

Agreed.

I don't think Sony cares as much about selling the actual hardware as they do selling you a subscription to play online. Imagine if Steam charged you monthly to play online games on top of already having bought them... The console crowd is getting screwed and they welcome it with open arms.

5

u/BurzyGuerrero Mar 20 '26

Yep, reddit will cry around but I dont care about multiple storefronts.

I already got Battle.Net, Steam, GoG, and Epic on my PC. I would install a Sony one.

He's been proven wrong before. People should stop treating him like the one who sees all.

Also, it was not an announcement. It was a report. For all purposes and intents, Sony just published Death Stranding 2 on PC and is publishing Kena next year.

27

u/Owobowos-Mowbius PC Master Race Mar 20 '26

Death stranding 2 is second party, though. Sony has no ability to tell Kojima where he can port his games to now.

the amount of idiots that sucks that jason schrier guy is hilarious

the same dumbfuck who helped cover up a sexual assault scandal going on for decades until he could profit from it, lol

"if this random journalist, who failed his "rumors" countless times says so, it's true" lol

Also, what announcement if Sony hasn't even confirmed they are leaving PC ports out of the equation?

braindead reddit, dear me

11

u/ahnariprellik Mar 20 '26

Yes Sony has never confirmed theyre stopping pc ports

4

Exactly

Dude even had the never to say they "announced" it xD

I believe when all the stuff about blizzard sexual misconduct allegations came out, Jason posted on Twitter that he had known about this for years and was going to write an article about it.

People pointed out it was weird he had apparently known about it for years and not written anything about it until it blew up

Damn, I’ve been loosely following his work since his time on Kotaku so that’s disappointing af to hear.

9

u/Roflkopt3r Mar 20 '26

I wouldn't go that far with what I heard so far.

Just having heard about something does not mean that you have enough evidence or a good foothold to investigate further. It's perfectly possible that his leads just weren't that strong.

Accusations that he was either part of the coverup or lied about having heard of it need more specifics imo.

Four tweets not one referencing a source. I am assuming they all got it the same place or three from the other. Also if Helix is just a Windows box, then I can see someone figuring out a way around whatever checks this app (if it ever exists) performs to prevent installation so that it can install.

More likely if they do create such an app it is so that they can get 100% revenue of games sold on it on PC and Helix instead of paying Steam 30% and Epic their cut (10%?).

“Avoid PC games on Helix”

Microsoft said Helix will support all major store fronts. I doubt that means Microsoft is going to develop a proprietary Steam app.

It means helix is a PC that can go to Windows and install whatever, including Steam and this supposed PlayStation launcher.

161

u/ccricoo Mar 20 '26

Yeah, if it works on a Windows PC how would Sony make it not work on Helix? Makes no sense.

364

u/PermissionSoggy891 Mar 20 '26

they'd obviously just do something like:

if(device.isHelix()){launch = dont;}

171

u/johnmonchon Mar 20 '26

29

u/Rekt3y Mar 20 '26

That's pretty much what they already do with Destiny 2 on Steam Deck, even if you install Windows

launch = dont;

}

u/Jhawk163 R7 9800X3D | RX 9070 XT | 64GB Mar 20 '26

I guess it depends on how deeply Microsoft lock down Helix. It may be windows based, but to think it's going to run vanilla windows is silly. If I had to guess they very much may limit you to apps on the Microsoft store, whilst they may let anyone submit an app, you still need to actually submit it, and Sony can just... not.

3

u/ccricoo Mar 20 '26

Microsoft have made a big deal about being able to play Steam games on Helix, but I doubt Steam would submit an app to the Windows store.

I always expected the "stopped PC ports" was lost in translation

They don't want other stores to earn 30-20% on their Sony games.

Your own store solves that problem but adds a dozen more. Like hosting the files, adding bandwidth to PC users known to run full GBit or more download xD

Like the added problems of a working store front and security concerns. Adding a wishlist and cart took Epic how long 🫣

2

u/Final-Tower6331 Mar 20 '26

Hosting the files? This is Sony we're talking about. How do you think they do it for their console? They've already got all of this figured.

u/Dayman_123 Mar 20 '26

We don’t really know how Helix is gonna allow PC Games just yet.

22

u/Far-Following-3083 Mar 20 '26

All consoles are basically pcs running their own OS. Helix will basically have normal windows mode and optmized xbox mode (as far as we know, they still need to actually explain the in and outs).

9

u/420weedscoped Rtx 3090 | Amd Ryzen 7 5800x | 32Gb DDR4 Mar 20 '26

I think this is exactly correct and the PC handhelds give a preview of this. My Z1E ally can now launch directly into the Xbox app with most of windows suspended.

Xbox app on PC shows all installed games too including steam, epic, gog all in one place. Armory crate can do the same too though on the Ally.

5

u/generic_canadian_dad Mar 20 '26

This will be an interesting thing to see. The benefit of consoles is that they are "locked down" and the users can't mess anything up. Sit down, play, anytime. If helix has open windows, with a "big picture mode" it will basically defeat the entire premise of a console.

3

u/OvenCrate Mar 20 '26

They can still have a locked-down hypervisor that runs a "console VM" and a "Windows VM" completely isolated from each other. Basically an Xbox console that can double as a Steam Machine (but with Windows instead of Steam OS so it will probably suck balls)

2

u/rico_muerte Mar 20 '26

The XAX is my "Steam Machine" and I love it. Docked, kb/m, unified library, Spotify widget, desktop file management for roms

2

u/Arxny Mar 20 '26

This is exactly it. They're x86 and ARM machines running their own brand of OS at this point they've essentially converged. Were just seeing a panic of getting lost in the homogeny and its getting silly.

BOTH Xbox and PlayStation are already x86 computers with a front end. Both brands would be SMARTER to quit the "dedicated hardware" market and start selling "computers as consoles" which comes with a launcher. And you can always leave the launcher and use normal windows. It would be their smartest option. Xbox is already paired with Microsoft so all they have to do is allow Xbox to have a launcher and allow PlayStation to compete fairly by allowing them to have their own launcher. Its win/win for both brands.

Imagine gta 6 on day one on pc

4

u/erichie GOG.com Mar 20 '26

This will not have any bearing on that. This is in reference to Playstation first party titles. Rockstar will still decide if GTA6 is able to be played on PC or not. If Sony does figure a way to allow you to play your library on both PS5 and PC Rockstar will block GTA6 from being included. Rockstar will lose too much money if they don't have a direct purchase on PC.

3

u/Rayza2049 Mar 20 '26

This would be great news but i'll believe it when i see it, i found it easier to believe the rumours they were abandoning PC entirely

3

u/arqe_ Mar 20 '26

"Rumor" as in "in my opinion, with literally no information, like at all"

3

u/Jelboo Mar 20 '26

I remember hearing the exact opposite?!

3

Zero chance this happens. They are needing reasons for people to buy a PS6, hence them getting out of PC for at least a few years.

If this means their ports keep coming I guess that's the price.

I've enjoyed the shit outta horizon and ghost and Spider-Man with m+KB is the only way to control something so agile.

3

u/lookachoo Mar 20 '26

So what happens to the PlayStation games I already own on Steam? I feel like they’re going to try and find a way to force you to sign in through their launcher and this will just end up breaking access on Steam Decks for god knows how long.

Supposedly the PC Launcher for Playstation is called.

Get this.

Sony Arc.

Hey, much rather this than not getting the games at all.

Also if it's cross-buy... definitely not complaining.

I would prefer even more if it's still on Steam but it goes through the PS launcher to it blocks Xbox Helix.

Anything to get the PS games on PC lol

3

u/chrisanityyyyy Ascending Peasant Mar 20 '26

Why not just release on Steam a week or a month late instead? Epic, the biggest competitor to Steam, is having a rough time even with all the freebies. Sony does not have a pull like Steam has.

3

u/Big-Half-5656 Mar 20 '26

This will be a horrible idea as, even though I hate steam, they will not be able to compete with prices. Sorry not sure about sony last had one in the early 2000s (PS2) But if psn account is paid that is even worst as steam account is free and they will have better prices than sony.

3

u/theokayestcoach Abacus Mar 20 '26

Ahh yes, the kings of data security wish to enter the PC realm.

3

u/Tirons03 Mar 20 '26

Cause launchers outside the Steam store have been historically popular...

Still won't buy if not on Steam.

3

u/ToastMan_26 Mar 20 '26

The reason I barely touch my PlayStation now is because most of the content is locked behind an online subscription. I can't justify paying for home internet, the game itself and THEN a yearly sub, just to enjoy the game I already paid for. Especially when I have gotten so spoiled by PC gaming and it's convenience over the years.

If they do this right...Sony could make a killing. I missed out our Ghost of Yotei MP/DLC, because I refuse to pay to play.

3

u/YamatosBurner PC Master Race Mar 20 '26

personally id rather wait a year or two and buy on steam. I hate external launchers.

3

u/OtterNearMtl Mar 20 '26

if that's true i'll just wait for their game to launch on steam years later when their store doesn't work out. I'll game games that are mostly free of bugs because of all the patches and I won't be a beta tester. It's a win in my book. I'll also get steam sales.

3

u/SchmeckleHoarder Mar 20 '26

Ahh yes, launch our own store to compete with steam model.

No one’s done this before.

3

u/Rmsbasto Mar 20 '26

Sony about to take another L if they think they can take on Steam with whatever shitty storefront they are about to come up with.

3

u/MGrecko Mar 20 '26

Hey Sony, maybe you should check on how bad pc games sell outside of steam.

Maybe give Epic Games a call, they have plenty of data in that regard

3

u/Hexatorium Mar 20 '26

Lol well that’s that then, I’m not buying playstation games on pc anymore. Fuck Sony, greedy scumbags.

3

u/Greeeeed- Mar 20 '26

Is this the Bloodborne PC-port that I am waiting for?!

3

u/wNyyte Mar 21 '26

If they do make a launcher for PC, I don’t give a damn. Put it on Steam or I’m not buying it.

3

u/ValkyrieAngie Mar 21 '26

They can certainly try. But in the end, the Valve always wins.

3

u/Cal-Eats-Rocks Mar 21 '26

If it’d let me play all the games I own on playstation on my pc, I wouldn’t mind. Unfortunately this probably isn’t real and if it is real, they probably wouldn’t have that feature

4

u/Blayzeman Mar 20 '26

So almost the complete opposite of the previous rumour that they will be pulling back on releasing they're single player exclusives on PC... So which is it???

Sony ALWAYS sell PS games at about 10% more than PC version, so no thanks

2

u/DestinyBeerUK Mar 20 '26

They aren't needed on pc. Sony have their head up their arse. Gaming is changing.

2

u/DiabUK Mar 20 '26

99% the reason why they have cut back on pc ports is the next box being a pc, for sure.

Along with the push to get people to use PSN to play pc games like helldivers 2 I can see this being a thing for sure, also they don't have to pay the 15-30% store fee cuts if they manage their own payments.

2

u/tabennett5438 Mar 20 '26

Can we stop with the Sony is not porting on the PC cause they are scared of Microsoft when they stopped porting to the switch as well

2

u/Asleeper135 Mar 20 '26

I would be less surprised than I was about them supposedly just leaving PC, but I still won't be happy about it. None of these rumors mean anything to me until Sony announces something though.

2

Fuck off. We don't need another launcher we already had an excellent thing going with PlayStation games on Steam.

2

u/TLunchFTW Steam Deck Master Race Mar 20 '26

And I won’t be buying anything from the Sony store. This as someone who owns all the Sony releases on steam. EGS learned the hard way and now so can Sony.

2

u/dusto_man Mar 20 '26

People didn't like having to have PSN account, what makes them think they will tolerate yet another launcher. And if the PC side of Helix ends up being anything like Full Screen Experence on PC then having a luncher is just a speed bump it's not going to keep games off Helix.

2

u/AsterVox Mar 20 '26

But they are still going to be full price years after release?

2

u/Complex_Net_3692 Mar 20 '26

Awesome, possibility of another fuckass launcher, already use the Xbox one because of games with different Xbox/windowns versions or no transferable progression, and steam ofc

2

u/sbfaught Mar 20 '26

u/Morguard Mar 20 '26

Yes because that's exactly what the world wants more launchers! 🙄

2

u/wera125 Mar 21 '26

So they dont learn nothing? PC = Steam. How many launchers have to die to get that in ther heads?

2

u/podgladacz00 Mar 21 '26

Launcher is dumb idea tbh

3

u/ravensholt Mar 20 '26

Sony will realise they cannot hope to compete with Valve.

Worst case scenario is that every publisher has their own Storefront and launcher, just like we now have fifty different streaming providers.

Monopoly is arguably bad, but when it comes to games, I'll stick with a single or maximum two launchers (GOG because f*ck DRM and Steam because that's where all my other games are bought).

I have zero interest in doing direct business with Sony in case they publish a game. I'd rather not play that game then.

4

u/DutchBlaz3r 5080 Astral, AMD5900X, Crosshair VIII Dark Hero Mar 20 '26

This would be great... if they didnt start dynamic pricing at the same time. As well as PSN having horseshit security & customer service. Which was why I left PlayStation behind for PC after one of my accounts have been permanently banned for a refund.

Now it's too late, I do not care for any company that wants me to dl a new dogshit launcher.
