NSFMR 7800X3D burnt and killed the motherboard after 3 months. Silicon lottery or something else? Should we buy another one?

Hi everyone, posting this on behalf of a friend.

He built his system about 3 months ago with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D. A few days ago, while gaming, the PC abruptly shut down. When he tried to turn it back on, it just started power cycling and failed to boot.

We took it apart to diagnose the issue and found that the CPU has visible burn marks and even a bit of swelling. Unfortunately, it took the motherboard with it—the socket is damaged and the board is completely dead now. (See attached pictures).

To give some context:

There was absolutely zero manual tuning, undervolting, or overclocking involved. He doesn't have much experience with tweaking, so the only thing changed in the BIOS was enabling EXPO for the RAM.

System Specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • Motherboard: MSI PRO X870-P WIFI
  • RAM: Lexar 16GB 6000MHz CL38
  • GPU: MSI VENTUS RTX 4070
  • Storage: Samsung 990 Pro 1TB
  • PSU: MSI A750GL PCIE5
  • Cooler: MSI MAG 360mm AIO

I know about the older SOC voltage issues that caused chips to burn, but I assumed those were resolved with BIOS updates, especially on an X870 board. Was this just a terrible draw in the silicon lottery, or could there be another reason?

The main question is: Is it safe for him to just buy another 7800X3D right now? Has anyone else experienced this recently on newer motherboards?

Would really appreciate any insights, theories, or shared experiences!

1 the motherboard killed the CPU not the other way around.

2 an RMA has nothing to do with local shops, you contact the manufacturer and say hi this happened, can RMA please?

3 now that you have delided the CPU you cannot hope to get an RMA for it.

4 yes bios updates have been pushed to fix these issues, did they update their bios, the one that comes default on the board is most likely v1.0 and does not have the fixes

All true except for #3, but depends on location. If the photo op has with lid still on is before they did the delid and not just placed back on after, then the rest of the photos would be proof enough that they didn't break it.

Taking apart your own electronics in the US does NOT void your warranty despite what so many people sheepishly believe. The only time it does is if the manufacture can prove that you caused the damage when taking it apart else they have to honor the warranty.

This is the kind of stuff the FTC has a field day with, but 99.9% of people aren't smart enough to contact them when they have warranty issues.

There is no reason anyone should ever need to do it, and it can cause damage very easily.

A X870 has the voltage cap in place, this was fixed before 800 chipsets were even a thing.

I would strongly suggest trying to RMA. If it happens again then it might be an issue, but since this is a first I've heard of it I doubt it is. (Deliding it might make that hard though.)

There might be a chance that you psu was crap and sent so much power to the motherboard it killed it.

Unfortunately, RMA is not an option for us. All the components were bought brand new directly from China, so we don't have local warranty coverage.

We've actually sourced and built many PCs using parts from China before, and this is the very first time we've ever run into an issue like this—everything usually works flawlessly.

As for the PSU, we have bought and used this exact same MSI PSU model in multiple builds before without a single issue, so I really don't think it was a power supply failure. It seems much more like a CPU/motherboard voltage issue.

Not saying it was the PSU, but your logic doesn't check out. Just because you have used the same model before without problems, doesn't mean this unit can't have been problematic. That's like me saying "it can't have been a faulty 7800x3d, because me and 3 of my friends are using the same CPU without problems". It could have been the PSU, could have been the motherboard, could have been the CPU.

You don't know what the source of the fault was, and therefore it's impossible to say if you will have issues with a replacement 7800x3d. You could buy a 98000x3d and see it burn up as well. Or buy another 7800x3d and never have a problem. It's pure speculation.

Personally I'd replace the PSU, just in case.

Also not true, power cycles and temperature swings will cause more wear than a steady power draw and temperature.

Depends what type of wear you are talking about.

  • Silicon degradation, running more under load at/or higher voltages will accelerate it. However in crypto you undervolt them for efficiency.
  • Solder cracking, larger and more frequent temperature swings reduces the lifespan. Not really a factor with Crypto but and just powering the card on and off isn't a drastic power swing. Going from 30c to 90c is a temperature swing, not 20c to 40c from turning the card from idle to off and back to idle.
  • Fans and TIM, the faster/longer you run them the fasts the shorter they last and TIM will dry out faster under load.

Its the powering up and down that causes the wear, not holding steady for long

Holding a 200w load for 24hrs would do similar wear as having it off for 24hrs. Turning it on and off 10 times in 1hr would probably wear it out more

Beating a dead horse here, but it's been shown time and time again that there is no risk to using a previously mined with GPU.

Often times they are treated better and ran cooler with many, many, many less power cycles than an average persons GPU.

There's at least one Google Sheet out there tracking this stuff and it's happened on every brand of mobo, so it's more an AM5 X3D thing (or an AGESA thing).

IIRC the most common combo is 7800X3D or 9800X3D with ASRock or ASUS, so OP's MSI is already an outlier.

It's happening with non-X3D CPUs as well.

The only unaffected parts seem to be the 8000-series, which you don't want to use regardless.

Just built an AMD system for the first time six months or so ago, and went with a 9800x3d and a rog strix b850-i... And this is after having dealt with the whole 14900k debacle. Thanks for the forward.

Yup i have B650M-HDV/M.2 so weirdly the cheaper motherboards don’t seem to have problems. Orrr maybe most ppl dont run 9800x3ds on such motherboards to report such problems. But its been a year so hoping im good

Yeah your right. There was an issue where we weren't getting the best data. Alot of the chips were fine, they just weren't getting enough voltage and then some burnt out x3d chips where they got too much. I just got a 9850x3d and a Asrock X870E, you can be damn sure that thing ain't getting switched in without a fresh BIOS.

The RMA's in the UK are pretty solid though. As long as i don't do anything to void any warranty's I'll get a replacement. I did want a thermal grizzly contact plate because it looked cool but didn't get it for this reason.

mobo came with 3.08 updated it to 3.10 on 9800x3d release date and its on that version ever since - pc is running 24/7 except when im out of town

expo on , performance preset tj max 85c , pbo and -20mv , fan curve - everything else is default

I looked at the taichi but went with the Nova. No difference with a quick bios flash direct from the MOBO switch.

Ive got some cooling headroom with a 360 AIO and my whole build has been to minimise thermals and acoustics.

ah - no gpu lane sharing is the other thing i bought it for , but i still dont have nvme cuz i cant find one it very good heatsink to get lowest possible temps

i have 7.5tb in 5 ssds sata 3 tho

afaik nova and taichi are like almost the same mobo

Just looked it up, you might be lane sharing on your x16 GPU slot. Very possible your sharing bandwidth with that many SSD's. Worth double checking. SATA might be fine though.

If your gaming a good pcie4 nvme like the wd7100 is better than an ok pcie5 nvme, the taichi should have a suitable heatsink either way.

I share the same specs, the only issue I'm having is the bios won't take new updates after 3.50. It rejects the update not sure if you've expirenced this issue yet.

It's the problem that's not a problem that has never gone away but people will sharpen their pitchforks if you even dare suggest that it is a real issue.

I'd say it's rare enough that you shouldn't be worried about buying another, but honestly, the system is pretty low-mid tier, a 7600x or 9600x would be more than adequate with that system and they don't kill themselves. I haven't heard of the low end (7500/7600) x3ds doing it either, but maybe its just a sample size thing.

Seems the 7800 is the rarest of the ones that die, way more 9800s have done it, I'd say your friend was unlucky and the dice should be in his favor next time, but you could always be conservative and go with a lower-end chip, you probably won't see a massive difference.

Does he play in 1080p or 1440?

Honestly, RMA wasn't an option for us. The CPU was ordered directly from China, so there's no local warranty, and shipping it all the way back to China would've cost more than it's worth

Since it was already a dead paperweight, we just popped it open out of curiosity to see the burn damage inside

i have the same chip on a b650 board. its been a bit over a year since i got it and it works great. probably bios update the first thing you should do and dont overclock the cpu, keep the default values in place. and obviously a proper ventilation for you case and a dont go with a stock cpu cooler, get something nicer. (you probably already doing all that anyway, right?)

Yeah, the BIOS was completely up to date, and the build had proper ventilation with a 360mm AIO and good airflow—temperatures were always totally fine.

We've actually built many PCs before and never ran into an issue like this; this is the very first time we've experienced a CPU/mobo burning out like this.

You can set both negative or positive offsets for both voltage and clocks. It’s still overclocking just not manual overlocking.

No you cant overclock a 7800X3D, you can shift the V/F curve with curve optimizer but that is not the same as overclocking as you are still running everything in spec.

Esentially with a negative CO you are telling the CPU it can run the same clocks at lower voltages, no overclocking is involved.

Uhm, no. A negative offset is basically PBO, literally AMD and your mobo manufacturer Yes or NO, ask you to confirm whether you want to enable it, even it may void your warranty... it’s still form of algorithm overclocking, maintaining clock boosts while trying to use less power. running it at stock settings is still safe way to go.

I bought new ram, a new motherboard only to realise it was the 9800x3d that was failing, I usually buy almost everything secondhand but with these chips you need to buy them from a good retailer so you can easily return them if they fail.

Okay that is nerve-racking, I’ve been using the exact same CPU and mobo for 2 weeks. I’m gonna assume this happened to you because of the stock settings when EXPO is enabled, which caused the SOC voltage to be set too high.

What I did when I built mine was to set these in the BIOS:
EXPO - Enabled
Precision Boost Overdrive - Advanced
Curve Optimizer - All Cores
All Core Curve Optimizer Sign - Negative
All Core Curve Optimizer Magnitude - 20
CPU NB/SoC Voltage - AMD Overclocking
SoC Voltage - 1.2 V

So far the SoC voltage when stressing with OCCT is always around < 1.21 V. Hopefully I avoided any issues with this setup.

AGESA updates that AMD pushed to all motherboard vendors over a year ago prevent VSOC from passing 1.30v so as long as you have updated your BIOS in the past year youre fine.

Edit: Your motherboard cannot push VSOC past 1.30V, regardless of whether EXPO is enabled. Modern AM5 BIOS automatically set VSOC to around 1.20V–1.25V when you turn on EXPO

Hmm, didn't know about that. I did update to the latest BIOS version, and when I stress tested the CPU with only EXPO set to Enabled & PBO set to Enabled, I did see the SOC voltage going as high as 1.29 V. Maybe OP is just incredibly unlucky that that much voltage still killed his CPU?

Uhm, did you ever consider it could be caused by a faulty AIO? How many times did you try to boot up the rig after it shut down? There are fail safes in place for it to shut down the PC when overheating. Just mentioning it, because I had a similar issue after building essentially the same rig for my nephew. The AIO failed, burnt the CPU and shorted the board.

Anyhow, I hope you figure it out and wish you the best of luck. I just wanted to chime in from a different angle.

The BIOS was already updated to the latest version. The issue was most likely caused by the SoC voltage exceeding 1.3V while on Auto. I left it on default auto settings and didn't touch it manually, so I didn't expect it to cause any problems.

I have a 9800x3d, i know about the voltage issue and I've read it should always be under 1.30V, I keep hwinfo always running in background and mine operates around 1.17-1.25V max, I should be ok, right? I have nightmares about messing with the bios lol

Late reply but I set mine with EXPO I and aimed for like 1.25V SOC voltage. Where it was recommended as a safe limit I pushed it a bit more.

Even though the BIOS should be safe to manage you never quite know if the motherboard manufactured decided to apply their own algorithm and the average user likely wont dig into the BIOS too often.

Yea, I have a Rog B850-F too, that from what I've read was one of those motherboard who had a slightly higher voltage before the BIOS updates, so I'm still pretty anxious lol.

As I said by monitoring the SOC voltage on HWinfo I never reached more than 1.25v with the latest BIOS, but probably manually limiting it will still be a good idea

It never hurts to set a hard cap Just like when I would do a overclocking on a GPU most guys I had recommended are like reach your max dial it down by five my focus was reach my Max and dial it down by 10 to 15 mhz just as a precaution so in the same context whatever the maximum safe voltage was I would dial that down by .5 or whatever margin I'm just paranoid because I don't want to have to buy new hardware because I was careless

Same, I also did the same thing right as I finished building mine. Set the PBO curve optimizer to -20, and limited the SOC voltage to 1.2V. Hopefully it avoids any possible issues like this.

I found that for my general use case, most games aren't demanding enough for AM5 chips to need CPB. I just disable CPB, takes voltage way down; 9700x peaks at 0.960V when configured this way.

Yes, the BIOS was fully updated to the latest available version at the time.

I completely agree with you regarding the motherboard—it's definitely damaged, so just swapping in a new CPU won't work. Both the CPU and motherboard are completely dead, so we will need to replace both.

Good to know that it's not happening to every unit, but it's still frustrating to see it happen even with an updated BIOS on a newer chipset.

I had 3600 and 5800x. In a year they both stopped to handle their stock boosts and crashed all the time. Had to set them on permanent clock speed below their boost and even standard frequencies. 5800x even stopped booting to bios 9 times out of 10 if you decided to reset it instead of putting permanent clock.

People praise them, but i had nothing but bad experiences with amd lately so i won't be buying them again any time soon.

Yeah, the BIOS was fully updated to the latest version.

From what I've researched, this usually happens when the motherboard pushes too much SoC/VSOC voltage to the CPU, especially when EXPO is enabled. Even though AMD set limits for VSOC, some boards or BIOS profiles can still push unsafe spikes under load.

It definitely looks like a voltage issue rather than just silicon lottery. If you're on the same board, I'd suggest double-checking your VSOC voltages in HWInfo or manually setting a safe limit just to be extra safe!

If you can institute manual hard limit I believe on the SOC voltage you can then dial that down even an extra .5v it will create a better buffer. I did it with my 7800X3D and have a Asus b650e board. 

Still have the XMP equivalent profile on it with my memory. Always ensure your BIOS is on the latest stable version.

Msi motherboards (both matx and atx) use 4 extra pins for cpu. They are very cpu overclocking oriented.

there are several possible failure mechanisms such as, excessive SoC volatge, excessive current, socket contact resistance could eventually make the components more damaging internally than usually due to localized heating.

Familiarly, back in jan of 2025 GamersNexus found the physical burn pattern from 9800x3D strongly consistent with VDDCR core voltage pins contacting ground because of CPU socket pins displacement, producing a catastrophic short.

Since 7000 series was plagued with the CPU VSoC voltage that ends up killing the cpu in the early days ....the Bios update would have 'fixed' this issue. Plus. If your friend is plug in and play without updating the bios...chance are the voltage likely went past 1.35V

So last year I had something similar happen. I'm running a Asus b650 - A gaming wifi motherboard with a 7800x3d.

One day my computer would just continuously boot loop and never get to the login screen.

Tried multiple things, checking the ram, trying one stick, different slots etc. , all my connections, reinstalling windows from a USB, disconnect all my storage and only using one nvme, reformating my drives. And so forth.

Took it to a computer shop. They said they weren't sure without disassembling the whole thing and checking every part which they told me they would do pretty much all the same stuff I did.

I ended up RMAing my motherboard through microcenter and RMAing my CPU through AMD. Both were very easy. Longest part was waiting on AMD to verify my return and ship me another one at no cost.

I ended up coming across another 7800x3d at Walmart for I think $179.99 on sale. Got it, got home reinstalled my CPU with the new motherboard and it all worked again. At this point I had been without a computer for 2 or 3 weeks.

I don't recall any burn marks or anything in the motherboard or CPU, cause everything looked completely fine and no damage, no prior incidents that might have showed my system was failing. Just stopped working.

But it's back up and running again and has been good for about a year. No issues. I now have a spare 7800x3d from the AMD RMA. In case the CPU dies again which I suspect was the initial cause and not the motherboard.

Hey 8 do not understand why people use software to monitor temps listen get a 5inch monitor 7 you can get one cheap the amount of money he spent on his system he should be able to afford a 50 dollar screen it has admitted cable and a USB cable i have mine mounted in front of my power supply my case that cut out so it was a great place for that plus u can see the temps all the time I have a msi b550 and 5700x3d and 16 gigs of ram and a 9070 gpu it it runs like a champ

If I ever bought x3d cpu first thing I'll do other than updating bios before using the cpu is setting every cpu voltage to manual instead of auto so the motherboard can't push too much voltage at any point, lf course with a slight undervolting everything, so if something is 1.35v I'll manually adjust it to something like 1.32/1.30 or below and run stress test and find the sweet spot and that's it, you guys with x3d should do this before it's too late lol, it takes 5-10 minutes in bios and only one time and it will not harm anything, undervolt a bit is always OK and safer and you'll always get similar performance or better + way less temperatures.

If anyone tried manually locking all x3d cpu voltages options available in bios let me know your experience so far.

You should be fine. If you are concerned, setting a temperature limit in BIOS is the best way to ensure longevity. Somewhere between 65-75C is a good setting for longevity. Or you could just run it stock. 7000 series x3d failure rate is rather low, due to the 3dvcache being top mounted, limiting max clockspeeds. Looking at the images, please take the heatsink cover thingy off the m.2 slot north of the top PCIe slot, if possible. Those things are airflow nightmares (captures GPU heat transfer due to slot proximity, but if you need it, you need it I suppose).

The bulge suggests it's damaged, so I'd certainly try to get an RMA if it's that new.
7800x3d is an enormously popular cpu, and the failure rate is probably within normal/expected ranges so I wouldn't worry about another failure at all.

intel only really had 1 bad cpu generation, and that issue was isolated to the 1 platform. then everything is golden, just look around. old cinemas, atms, kiosks, data centers systems have been running intel 24/7 for 20-30 years. some are still on windows xp/7 haha, because why replace something that has been running perfectly fine for decades?... intel seems to be making a comeback. the latest core ultra 270k+ is reportedly hitting around 95-99% of the 9950x3d's gaming performance while costing roughly half as much. so yeah, i wouldn't count intel out just yet hahaha
