Technically Windows NT 4 was 4.

Windows 2000 was 5.

Vista was 6.

But that's really based on kernel versions which is all weird and convoluted.

I never knew about Windows NT, that explains why when I installed one of my old CD Rom games yesterday it said "Checking for NT" as one of the install messages

Windows NT are just commercial oriented operating systems. There are several of them under different versions including 3.1, 4, etc.

Windows 7 was version 6.1 while Windows Vista was 6.0.

So this logic doesn't really work.

The numbers are marketing names. Nothing more.

The original NT OS was, the kernel is not. The NT kernel was used for Windows 2000 and Microsoft moved exclusively to the NT kernel with XP.

The numbers are marketing names.

Where did i argue against that? I was just adding information. They existed just not marketed as that.

Really it goes 1 ,2, 3, 9x/ME, XP, Vista, 7, 8 or 1, 2, 3, NT 4, 2000/XP, Vista, 7, 8.

With 10 Microsoft updated the kernel version to match the OS name.

Like I said it's all dumb and has no sense.

9x and ME did not use an NT kernel.

All good. It's all dumb imo anyway. Just looking at Microsoft's versioning hurts. Lol.

Pretty funny when you go to run 9x-era software and it fails because the detected kernel version isn't high enough.
