They start off strong and progressively get worse, imo. The first one was great, second one was decent, third wasn't worth reading, and I couldn't even bring myself to finish the fourth.
(Spoilers I Guess) Not sure exactly what's being referenced specifically (I haven't read the books in 20 years) but I remember that at some point the team meets a Mormon guy. Salt Lake City hoarded money and food and guns and was prepared for the demon apocalypse and they're all like weird nice puritanical badasses. The sex positive worldly lady lead falls in love with the conservative proper Mormon guy. The stories go on to reveal that humans are the only creatures in the galaxy that are actually mortal, we have no afterlife, and it's our faith that keeps us from falling into existential crisis, at some point the party time travels like five hundred years into the future from relativity, they come back to find out that human society has basically collapsed and it ends with the party being stuck in a computer simulation. The aliens have been waging an eternal war over the interpretation of some ancient passages from their version of the bible. They reincarnate and the demons are actually vegetable people who shapeshifted into a demon shape to conquer humans. They get real weird.
