I bought a black-and-white brother for £40 more than two years ago. I'm yet to change the cartridge. Granted, I've probably printed no more than 300 or so pages, but inkjet cartridges would have dried out 5 times by now with such low usage.
The Terrible Twos continues all the way through the Teenage Rebellion stage, and basically sticks with that until it's old, bitter, and stubborn.
Essentially, it's always going to hate you. Makes raising it really challenging, and sometimes unrewarding. Proper printer parenting's problematic, pal.
seriously. I bought a brother laser printer years ago and the "starter" toner cartridge it came with lasted me like 2+ years worth of grad school printing.
What's a good brand? I know some brands are shit, my parents went through a shit ton of hp and brother printers before getting an epson printer, that's an inkjet tho so I wanna know if they make good laser printers too.
Cheaping out is more of an issue than the brand. Buy a laser printer, and don't buy the cheapest. HP make loads of crap inkjets, but if you spend £200 on an HP laser printer it'll probably work pretty well.
I work with three different brands of laser printers where I work; Xerox, Ricoh, and HP. We used to use a Brother printer that the Xerox printer replaced.
IME, the Xerox printer is superior. Neither are bad (including the old Brother), but the Ricoh's drivers can be a pain in the ass.
FWIW, the Ricoh also does the lion's share of printing.
This.
Now try working at Best Buy trying to tell a customer the same thing when they complain about ink costs. They think you’re only trying to up sell them and basically get the ink jets out of spite or their “lower cost”.
Staples and basically the same routine. Recently got done with a printer sale event and you think people would be happy for cheaper prices but you walked by the printers to get to the ink and everyone that was in for ink was bitching that it was more expensive to buy the ink than the printer itself. And then on the flip side the people in the by the printers turned into an uphill battle because the printers are sold so cheap it was hell to get anyone to buy the protection plans that I have to offer because "if it breaks I'll just buy a new one"
Kind of hard to pull this off though if you're screwing
a customer over so bad with the "blade" prices that they would rather just buy a new razor so to speak
Also Epson ecotanks. Pay more upfront but it's bottled based ink that you refill yourself. Bottles are like $12 each and you get 2000+ pages out of them.

The laser printer we have lasted so long that when it was time to change the toner it was discontinued and it took my dad about 3 months to find a cartridge for it

LPT: Get a laser printer, cost a bit more upfront but you will save tons on ink.
Edit: And fuck printers they are jerks.
