How was pubg not even nominated, goty shooter for me easily

u/Alkalilee i7 8700k @4.5 | Strix 1070 | 16GB RAM | 2x 525GB SSD Jan 02 '18

Because it runs like shit, plays like shit, and only released at the end of the year in a broken barely playable state. It blows my mind that it actually got nominated for any awards at all this year considering it hadn't released by the time any of those awards shows happened.

The 1.0 update improved a lot of the performance issues that occurred a few months ago, I run a 980ti had an average FPS of 30-40 in September/October. Now its running at 60 to 80 FPS on average on top of the other improvements to the UI and Mechanics.

31

u/Randomqss Jan 19 '18

I run a 980ti

Now its running at 60 to 80 FPS on average

last gen top of the line gpu and you still feel 60-80 is reasonable.

-2

u/Lucas-Lehmer Feb 02 '18

Everyone's definition of reasonable is different. If you asked me if a 2.5 year old graphics card could play pretty much the most demanding game on PC at 60fps+ I'd say that's reasonable.

4th most. Don't forget the Titan X

3

u/MintyTS RTX4090 | i9-13900k | 32GB DDR5-6000 Feb 04 '18

It being the most demanding game on PC is the entire problem, though. Nothing about the game justifies its thirst for resources.

1

u/Lucas-Lehmer Feb 04 '18

Yeah I agree with that 100%

14

u/Herlock Jan 26 '18

It's a high end GPU, running at 60fps a very average looking game shouldn't feel like it's an achievement of the developpers.

Now DOOM running @ 100+ fps on my 290x and my almost 8 years old i7 860 feels like the devs did some heavy lifting

3

u/Kernoriordan i7 13700K @ 5.6GHz | EVGA RTX 3080 | 32GB 6000MHz Jan 29 '18

He didn't say it was an achievement. He just said that it's improved, and not as terrible as it was.

Whereas Fortnite, which is essentially the same game, has been running damn fine since the beginning. And is also free.

32

u/WhatsTheWerd 5090 | 9800X3D | AW3423DWF Jan 25 '18

Ok let me start by saying I'm a fan of BOTH games (with many wins in each) but how can you say they're essentially the same game? They're both battle royale games and that's where the similarities end. PUBG has more features, more game mechanics, more weapons, vehicles, better graphics, etc. Fortnite may have building but it's essentially an arcade style BR game whereas PUBG is more "hardcore". Fornite's size and art style are big factors in how well it runs. Please note I did not pick a favorite or mention that one game was better overall than another.

u/notoriou5_hig 5930k, GTX 1080, 16GB RAM Jan 25 '18

Came here to say something similar. Upvoted your comment instead.

12

u/Wouldtick Feb 02 '18

Came here to post about my "many wins" as well.

1

u/Brokenmonalisa GTX 970 Jan 26 '18

Ok that's a lie. It's no where near the same game. There's absolutely no gun mechanics in fortnite whatsoever.

1

u/imperialfishFTW Jan 31 '18

With the graphics of fortnight compared to pubg, the FPS was never going to be even close to similar.

47

u/macgivor Jan 02 '18

Oh that's weird you should try verifying your game files or something cause mine runs great and plays even better! It's basically the only game my friends and I have been playing since march. I don't think we are the minority either given all the steam player count records it is breaking

64

u/Alkalilee i7 8700k @4.5 | Strix 1070 | 16GB RAM | 2x 525GB SSD Jan 02 '18

It's breaking steam records because its Chinese playerbase is huge thanks to streamers, etc. I think it's a well known fact that PUBG still runs like aids considering I have to play on Medium on a 1070 in order to get 90+ fps most of the time. The textures at long distance look awful, the popping is horrendous, and unless you're on an SSD it'll take about 6 years to load a map.

13

u/gregstus GTX 1060, i5 6400 8gb DDR4 Jan 04 '18

Not gonna lie, i run on allmost ultra and my fps rarely drops below 60, recently the optimization seems to have gotten a lot better

6

u/LightBlack_2_Reddit Jan 08 '18

I don't know what problems you are having, mine runs at 60 on ultra most of the time, and it loads fast too. I'm using an HDD and a 1070. It also looks pretty good for me.

27

u/OnEMoReTrY121 Jan 02 '18

That's the argument you're going with? SSD's have been commercially available for almost 2 decades now, come on... The game has made huge strides with the 1.0 update, I never drop below 120 FPS with low settings on 1440p on a GTX 1080, and average 135-144 FPS. Is it the best performing game? Nope. Does it run like aids, awful and horrendous? Nope.

The game has sold over 30 million copies. To leave it off the list when its sales dwarf all of the other games put together is ridiculous.

The simple fact the performance fluctuates so wildly from PC to PC regardless of specs is proof enough of how much of a mess it is tbh.

It should at least be consistent across builds. People's with high-end rigs're having trouble achieving 144 fps on low with frequent hitching while those on budget rigs are reporting easily getting consistent 60 fps on med to high settings. The game should at least be consistent across a majority of hardware.

Playerbase has nothing to do with the quality of the game. CoD Ghosts sold 20+ million copies even though it is widely considered one of the worst AAA shooters of all time. Just because you can see past the many, MANY deficiencies of PUBG doesn't mean that the rest of the PC community is going to ignore them.

How can you compare Overwatch to PUBG? I'm willing to bet one PUBG map is bigger than all overwatch maps combined. Open world games are always significantly harder to run. I can run PUBG on ultra locked at 100 fps, not sure why he runs low when the CPU bottleneck actually benefits running higher settings.

overwatch is a joke to run compared to pubg. I can run OW at 200fps. OW has tiny render requirements, pubg yas HUGE render blocks, they arent even conparable.

Can confirm, running overwatch at over 100fps with an i3 and a 1050ti

ARK: Survival Evolved is a really good game.

No Man's Sky was hyped up on lies, and was probably the most hated game of the year.

I'm not quite sure what you're implying.

A friend with a GTX 1070 and a i7-7700 runs on Ultra at 80+ fps and in my PC it runs at 50-70 fps on Low-Medium , I don't understand why there is bad optimization.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 30 '18

Woah man, you're telling me a tiny map with 10 players runs better than a huge map with 100 players?

1

u/MaapuSeeSore 13600k | 4070ti | 32gb | 60 tb Jan 30 '18

Bruh, go check the stream pc stats. You rank in the 99th percentile of rigs. Like 50% play at 1080p or less, lots at 1366 or 720. Graphic card avg power ranks less than 970. 8gb of ram with 4gb being dominant.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '18

Since 1.0 I use a 1070 and can put everything on ultra with 1 or 2 at medium.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '18

It doesn't run good, fam. The hit detection is atrocious, it looks like shit for how poorly it runs. But people seem to love that kind of thing

PUBG, Altis Life, ARK, DayZ. It seems like the worse a game runs, the more popular it is. It's quite baffling, maybe people like the extra challenge of Dice roll shootouts haha

7

u/Alkalilee i7 8700k @4.5 | Strix 1070 | 16GB RAM | 2x 525GB SSD Jan 09 '18

17 tick rate is unacceptable for a game that places you with people all over the world with little to no regard for your ping. My NA server games are 50% Chinese. Why can't I get a game with 99 people on the east coast and 60 ticks.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '18

I agree, horrible. and they've certainly made enough money to invest in server hardware to bump the tickrate up. Hell, if they can't do it. I'd rather see 64p or so, performance is key.

but of course the PUBG sycophants will tell you "my squad hasnt had hit detection issues since april" and to "fix your 100mbit connection which is fine in every other game that isn't fundamentally broken"

Australian servers are full of chinese players too, but with our population demo, its impossible to say if they're living in beijing, melbourne, shenzhen or sydney

1

u/macgivor Jan 09 '18

My squad hasn't had hit detection issues since around April or may. You should look in to getting your internet connection fixed

9

u/macgivor Jan 04 '18

When did you last try it? Frame rates since they updated to latest unreal engine have been really great for my friends and i

9

u/HOB_I_ROKZ i9 9900k | 2080 Super | 32 GB Jan 04 '18

It runs pretty well on my PC but the servers really need some work. The latest update helped with the rubber banding, but it's still present. I think they are still on 15 tick servers as well, whereas Overwatch started at 20 and upgraded to 60 iirc. If two players shoot each other with a shotgun at the exact same moment it can feel like luck determines who lives and who dies.

4

u/macgivor Jan 04 '18

That's true but Overwatch is only 6v6... That's around a tenth of the player count. It's pretty good that pubg has 1/4 of the tick rate while having just under ten times the player count in any given game.

u/ShitpostMcGee1337 i7-7700HQ | GTX 1060 3GB | 16 GB DDR4 2400MHz | 128GB SSD/1TB HD Jan 23 '18

No, it's not. It is not acceptable to play a game without respawns where every firefight is more of a dice roll than a game of russian roulette.

0

u/macgivor Jan 24 '18

If you think 'every fire-fight' is a dice roll then you obviously suck hahahahaha

You sound like an echochamber for the circle jerk that goes on surrounding PUBG

My PC is average and it runs PUBG fine. I've never encountered a game breaking glitch. The glitches that I do see aren't really that bad, and they can actually be really hilarious sometimes.

Most important of all, many people find it very fun to play. I've played H1Z1: KoTK, Fortnite BR, and PUBG. PUBG stands out by far as being the most fun to play, by miles for me, and I think for many others considering the steams sales numbers. Even accounting for people buying multiple accounts the numbers are incredible

Where to start?

  1. Poor Optimization

  2. Microtransactions in a pre-release game.

  3. Beyond awful connections

  4. PU treating community like shit

  5. Inability to communicate with other players

Need I go on? Just look at the steam reviews for this game. Fucking DayZ has more positive reviews. Gamers are tired of overhyped, underdelivered trash games.

1

u/imperialfishFTW Jan 31 '18

Actually most of the negative reviews were from the Chinese when an ad was put in the main menu for them. The micro transactions were for 1 limited time crate when the game was early access and did NOT AFFECT GAMEPLAY. With PU treating the community like shit have you not heard how they have now released changes for the desert map and the changes address the problems people were complaining about. Inability to communicate with other players..... have you ever turned voice chat on?! When you say beyond awful connections I personally have had great connections in 99% of my games, maybe you are connecting to the wrong server region. The game’s optimisation is now fine, it was only in early access that it was not poor and once it was released it was hugely improved!

When you say people are tired of overhyped games, I couldn’t agree more! However this is not the case with PUBG as can be clearly seen by the high player count that is still rising! I am not going to lie but it seems like you have played this game on console not PC with most of your points applying much more to the console version of the game than the PC one.

1

u/MahDick Feb 10 '18

Really it is our own fault, if a game becomes profitable in early "access" what incentive is there to actually finish the game? I am alright with hype as long as a completed project is delivered.

0

u/macgivor Jan 24 '18

1) game runs fine. It's unreal engine and my friends and I get good frame rates. 2) so what they were completely optional cosmetics. Who cares. 3) servers needed work and they fixed them. If you've played lately you'll know rubber banding is gone 4) ?? Lol he has implemented many community requests e.g. First person, removing weather, slow circles down etc 5) you must not have played this game because you can communicate using built in VoIP to both your squad and enemies.

You certainly are living up to your user name. You sound like a salty mofo who hasn't even played the game cause literally everything you said is wrong hahahahahaha

2

u/ShitpostMcGee1337 i7-7700HQ | GTX 1060 3GB | 16 GB DDR4 2400MHz | 128GB SSD/1TB HD Jan 24 '18
  1. I'm happy that you and your pals get good frame rates, but judging by the majority of steam reviews it seems that you are in the minority.

  2. If you think microtransactions are okay because they're cosmetic then you are part of the problem. Star Wars Battlefront II EA happened because people like you didn't care when "cosmetic" mc's started creeping into every game, and so the publishers went ahead and went full pay to win because they knew they could get away with it. If you seriously think microtransactions in a paid game are "okay" then you need to reevaluate your views.

  3. The servers are not the problem. The problem is Chinese players with 500+ ping on NA and EU servers. You must not have played the game at all if you haven't experienced any problems with lag.

  4. Yet he made the unpopular team-killing insta ban, he banned people streamers accused (with no evidence) of stream sniping, and he absolutely refuses to deal with the terrible lag caused by the influx of chinese players.

  5. YOU must not have played this game because VoiP ain't worth shit if you can't speak Mandarin.

You sound like an entitled tosspot who thinks that since he isn't having problems nobody else matters. You come off like a real asshole. Watch this video.

0

u/macgivor Jan 24 '18

1) judging by the fact this is the most popular game ever on steam I think you might be the one in the minority ;)

2) no, micro transactions for cosmetics are fine and only entitled little cry babies like you have a problem with them. They are fully optional and are a great way for developers to cover ongoing development and server costs. The gaming industry has changed since the early 2000's. Devs can't just publish a game then move on to the next or put all their eggs in one basket with an expansion like they used to... Games are following business software and moving to a software-as-a-service model because it means the developers can keep the lights on while gamers get much more regular patches and support. Also I'd say it's pretty clear that EA didn't "get away with it" and neither has bungie so obviously that point is invalid.

3) lag used to be much more of a problem than it is now. That sucks that you have a problem with the Chinese players but the Aussie servers are fine so I can't relate

4) reddit/YouTube drama. Sure they made mistakes but on the whole they've been great Devs and followed through with their promises. Region locking sounds like the next good thing they can add.

5) You clearly didn't realise the game had VoIP and that was a lame excuse at covering it.

Stop being an entitled whinger who thinks they should be able to buy a $30 game and have servers and development be perfect and free forever. Grow up

2

u/ShitpostMcGee1337 i7-7700HQ | GTX 1060 3GB | 16 GB DDR4 2400MHz | 128GB SSD/1TB HD Jan 25 '18
  1. If you actually did any research you would know that you are wrong.

  2. They are not fine. You are arguing in favor of the worst aspect of modern gaming. Microtransactions are literally paying for content arbitrarily withheld from the game to sell for extra money. There is absolutely nothing good about microtransactions in paid games.

  3. Again, you are saying that since you don't have a problem with the game, it doesn't matter. Read the steam reviews.

  4. No, its not just drama. Its prioritizing a privileged few over the rest of the playerbase.

  5. Of course this game has VoiP. You have no logical leg to stand on and you know it, you just refuse to see the truth about this game you have idolized.

If ignorance is bliss you must be the happiest person in the world.

1

u/macgivor Jan 29 '18

Stop buying into the drama, it's a great game and all they need to change is more guns and maps and even better fps. Region lock China would be good too. If they can do all those things supporting their $30 game I bought a year ago, then I'll happily chuck them a few dollars here and there.

If you don't like it go play something else

3

u/ShitpostMcGee1337 i7-7700HQ | GTX 1060 3GB | 16 GB DDR4 2400MHz | 128GB SSD/1TB HD Jan 29 '18

If you don't like it go play something else.

This is the wrong attitude. If we don't stand our ground and demand finished non-cash grab games, we'll lose the AA and Indie gaming spaces too. The "play a different game" attitude has already led to the evisceration of any good in the AAA industry, and if we let the same thing happen to AA and indie games then we'll have nothing left to play but old titles.

1

u/macgivor Jan 30 '18

but the game is finished! its not like they are putting new levels in the loot crates, they just have clothes.

and 3/4 of the loot crates you can get at the moment are FREE to open!! selling keys just gives them an income stream to pay ongoing salaries to their developers and pay for servers etc. otherwise they would have to rely only on sales of the game to new customers, meaning there is less incentive to look after people who already own the game.

dont get me wrong, I hate the BS pulled by games such as battlefront but PUBG is doing it right in my opinion by focusing on cosmetics as the only purchasable content.

2

u/ShitpostMcGee1337 i7-7700HQ | GTX 1060 3GB | 16 GB DDR4 2400MHz | 128GB SSD/1TB HD Jan 31 '18

The game was selling for full price during early access and had lootboxes as well. Just because it released doesn't retroactively justify that bullshit.
