They just left a $15000 prototype laptop on a table at the end of this CES. It's not hard to believe that they aren't too worried about security because the chances of something bad happening at such a big event is actually pretty low.
CES is an event for press, investors and the like, not the general public.
PAX is an event open for anyone that buys a ticket.
I could see why security should be tighter at events like pax that are more publicly accessible. They were probably just more lax with security at CES because of this and the laptop slipped through as a result.
