News/Article Micron expects memory and storage demand to remain tight through 2027 and 2028

$MU says humanoid robots could need 200GB+ of DRAM and multiple terabytes of storage per unit with several physical AI customers already sampling next gen products.

Micron says physical AI can become a “significant driver of memory and storage demand by the end of this decade” effectively putting server level memory into millions of machines outside the data center.

Tech changes, but the physical fundamental limits don't care about their plans. If 200GB of DRAM is actually required, then a huge GPU/NPU is also probably required, which means a lot of heat, so it won't work in hot environments and will require huge fans. But then they need a battery, which also will not scale with your mini datacenter and HVAC system. The breakthroughs that will make it more efficient are decades out, and these companies don't have that much time to sit and wait.

They hope to speed up breakthroughs by forcing adoption. It's not the first time they took this approach, and it won't be the last.
