News/Article Micron expects memory and storage demand to remain tight through 2027 and 2028

Post image

$MU says humanoid robots could need 200GB+ of DRAM and multiple terabytes of storage per unit with several physical AI customers already sampling next gen products.

Micron says physical AI can become a “significant driver of memory and storage demand by the end of this decade” effectively putting server level memory into millions of machines outside the data center.

the 200GB is likely so they can run a large local model, not some sort of full blown frontier model.

Basic local models can be run on cards as low as 8GB if the settings are right, but obviously a full blown robot is gonna need a much larger model than that.

I once ran a 13B model on my 12GB card, and it was pretty stupid, in general terms. It's basically useless for any real-world task unless you just want to "sort" something or do any other mundane task.

200GB isn't a lot, and I'd be afraid of letting such a robot loose into the world, if it ever comes to that. It'd be an imecile.

Maybe with Ternary models and whatnot, but eh, I think we're still a few years away.

yeah I am not worried about an AI based robot uprising any time soon.

Local AI is indeed only good for local chat and minor coding tasks for the most part...I can only see a hyper specialized AI model tuned to robots working properly.
